Thread: What Did You Do Today (2016) |

Ian, my Dad was like that, delighted in telling the check-out girl how much his shopping came to before she could hit the 'total' key, then tell her how much change he was due. The look of total surprise on the girls face, like how could someone do that without a calculator, was brilliant. Happy Days! Chris |

Senior Management gave me my pressies early, a bench belt sander and a boring head set, but daughters came up on the day with a 6" digital height gauge, slitting saw blades, 20-40-80 blocks and a universal type DTI holder - wonder how they all knew what I wanted, perhaps that list I wrote out, it worked a treat! Hopefully the link below will go to a vid showing how `RR built Merlin engines in WW2: they were very sophisticated and clever and far more advanced for their day than I had imagined! Excellent stuff! Chris |

I have a MAC and I have Adobe Reader on my Mac. Most pdf's open automatically in Adobe Reader, no problems, every time, but the file 'Model 1' had to be downloaded and saved in my pdf documents file and then reopened in Adobe reader for me to see more than a heading. Then it wanted the 3D enabling which I did, but for some reason Adobe Reader now keeps crashing at that point . So I am giving up for tonight! Will watch some nice engineering vids instead! Chris |

Thanks Neil, now found it thanks to your link, but tried downloading it and it just downloads a blank sheet! Why is nothing ever easy?!! Chris Edited By ChrisH on 05/12/2015 18:57:13 |

In MEW 236, top of page 7, there is indication that to accompany David Thomas's article on his X3 Mill belt drive conversion downloadable pdf files with fully rotatable 3D diagrams are available on this website. Well, wherever they are, they are too well hidden for me to find! Can anyone point me in the right direction please? Chris |

Not so much a comment on 'first wage' (but it was £13/10/0 per month in Sept '62, plus £3/7/6 a week living allowance as I was away from home as an engineer cadet with a shipping company - remember them, we used to have lots of them, back in the days when we had a merchant navy) - more a comment on the VAT rate in 1973 of just 10%. Wow, we didn't know we were born! Been told now we have to have the VAT rate where it is because our rulers in the EU insist that is what it must be and we are not free to change it. If that is the case then we know what to do come the ref. !0%. Wonderful! Chris |
Thread: MEM Website |

Humm - problem may have been solved. I saw that Safari had a 'reset' facility, and within that there are various selectable options so that you can reset but not lose history for example. So I unchecked what I wanted to save and clicked 'reset' and found I am straight into MEM again, so back to having 2 good sites to access. For the time being at least! Chris |

Hi Trevorh, very strange, I am still getting the message: "If you are seeing this page instead of your website, please contact your hosting provider as there is a problem with your website." My website? What is my website? I don't understand at all! Not only that but I tried to contact them using the email address I have for them of [email protected], and twice now I have had a non delivery notification report saying that it was a 'bad destination mailbox address', so I don't know what is happening! I have got a message off to someone there who used to be involved, I just hope he can forward my query to someone there who can help. Chris Edited By ChrisH on 26/11/2015 14:56:15 |

Well, I am still getting the the message that there is a problem with my website. I am not sure what they mean by that, what website would that be, but perhaps it is an Apple thing, as I tried via my (non-Apple) mobile phone and I went on OK, but it was so small I can't read it! Chris |

Seems to be a bit cheeky, using this forum to ask about another, but is it just me or is there a problem with the MEM website - are other having problems accessing it? I haven't been able to access it since last night - a message comes up saying there is a problem with my website? Chris |
Thread: Speed Control of Single Phase Motors |
23/11/2015 20:58:43 |
Tim, I feared that be the case! Oh well, start saving I suppose! Steve, I will look on the internet for a variable speed pulley systems, my lathe came with one so I am familiar with the concept, good idea. Chris |
23/11/2015 18:12:28 |
A question for the electrical engineers here as I have no idea if what I want is even feasible or not, never mind how it can be achieved. My mill is powered by a 1hp capacitor start single phase motor. What I would like to have is a mill motor with variable speed control (but which will not overheat by going too slowly!). Is this possible to provide some form of variable speed control for the motor I have, and if so how do I do it, or do I need to go down the "three phase motor with inverter control" route instead? Thread: Stuart 10H and 10V build thread |

David, although I have a small wood burner in my shed I am finding I seldom use it at present as it runs best on charcoal which I haven't got much of - if on wood you have to stoke it every 20 minutes! So I have a small fan heater my daughter 'found' for me cheap in a charity shop, a 1kW/2kW model. I only have it on 1kW on a low setting, and it doesn't have to be on for very long before the shed is nice and cozy and it cuts out on thermostat. After it has reached temperature it doesn't kick in again very often, so not too pricy to run plus it's instant heat, plus it's dry heat. Worth considering. Also running a dehumidifier on humid-stat (not continuous) that keeps the chill off the shed as well as dry. Looking forward to the build continuing! Chris |
