Thread: Another Smart Meter thread.
11/11/2022 09:24:44

I wonder if the great unwashed change over to "Off peak" usage, how long it would take for this to be less economical? Remember when Diesel was cheaper than Petrol Etc.?

OK guys, advice please. I do not want or desire a 'smart meter' & thus far have resisted my suppliers pleas to have one installed, they are now saying I must have a new meter installed due to safety concerns as my old meter is 15 years old! Can I still refuse, I'm guessing not ?

Tony

Yes you can. Couple of years ago had to have my meter changed due to age. Fitter was told he wouldn't get admittance if he was going to fit dumb meter. Reply was no, only a new gas meter and he wouldn't have one in his house.

Thread: Frustration

A few years ago, I tried to set up an account with the HSBC. This was to enable a colleague in the Fiddlepines (His description) to transfer on occasions, funds for me to purchase model engineering items a post (Royal Mail) out to him. Why not him do this direct? Cos many suppliers wouldn't do this. After discussions with various bank officials, they refused me on the strength of the POSSIBILIY of it being used for money laundering.

Recently had to verify my identity via scans of passport and driving licence. Passport was fine as I already had a scan of this BUT Driving Licence was rejected because it wasn't scanned in COLOUR. This was to 'Allow' me to set up an account to send a cheque to them. This was to ensure that this would be sent to them via first class mail (?) to arrive within 24hrs of order otherwise, possibility of them cancelling the order. Delays due to PO strikes NEARLY caused this.

Thread: Issue 321, Cover picture raises questions.

Wonder if the new owners of the mag. will be prepared, for anyone following this example, to pay compensation in the event of an injury to any of its customers by following this example? An explanation in the text doesn't hold water cos let's face it, in many cases, 'If all else fails, RTFM'. In recent history, the same mag was criticized for showing the conversion of a battery powered drill from an internal battery to an external power pack, connection between the two by means of a 13A plug and socket. '240V into 18V causes a rapid release of the magic smoke if plugged into the wrong socket'.

I left an American forum years ago for exactly the same reason of an "Experienced" poster showing exactly the same thing in one of his posts. His excuse being "I've done this for thirty years" and yes, I've got one or two scars after fifty years in industry AND home shop stupidity but if one or two harsh comments stops a 'newbie' having to attend A&E - - - -

Thread: Midland's Show & A Question
15/10/2022 12:24:30

Seems that the 'Old' Exhibition Hall used for past Harrogate shows has been rebuilt. On reliable information, there will be a model railway contingent on display. HOPEFULLY, this will reduce the entrance fees which eventually ruined the earlier shows. No doubt, the same reasons (NOT excuses) will be the same for the major machinery suppliers being absent, may be the norm. One wonders, now the hobby has changed so much, how many machines are now sold on the strength of display as opposed to handle twiddling.

In the dim and distant days of my apprenticeship, in West Yorkshire the terms 'Bare' and 'Full' were not used,- - - - but the terms 'Shy' and 'Proud' were freely used in the toolroom and perfectly understood.

Thread: Unknown spring collets
12/10/2022 10:13:38

No, I was referring to the DIAMETER (Cylindrical) with a WIDTH of 4.3mm. I was led to believe cylindrical was a circular description .sad

Regards Ian.

I do realize there will be a retort to this reply but the above will be MY last clarification.

Edited By Circlip on 12/10/2022 10:15:44

11/10/2022 09:18:27

Difference in interpretation of 'cylindrical section'. I was referring to the 4.3 wide section, not the 6.7 one.

Regards Ian.

10/10/2022 08:37:07

Idea was/is, to fit the collet into the screw cap, the bore of which allows the nose of the collet to be sprung into it and then fit this into the holder body. Rather than use a Birmingham screwdriver to extract the collet, the cap acts as a jacking screw. If the face of the cylindrical section wasn't there, it would be difficult clamping anything in the collet.

Thread: MOT - am I being taken for a ride?

'Floating' earths account for mysterious faults on all forms of equipment. Had a Ford Escort 1.6D years ago. Turning LH indicator on, part way through the corner, the 'Ticking' would stop and restart when going straight again. Binnacle switch? No, turned (bad pun) out to be bad earth on LH rear light cluster plug. Earthing is first thing to check on trailer electrics to fix some weird lighting faults.
