Thread: Boring for a Beginner
24/03/2010 14:03:54
Dear Mr editor, can you move the "Philosophers" posting into the correct thread, think he's "Stoned"

  Regards  Ian.
Thread: Suggestion: Forums - to Improve Readability
24/03/2010 11:06:52
Aye, and on forums how about putting post numbers on, it makes it MUCH easier replying to individuals.

Thread: Gauge Glass Valve
24/03/2010 10:59:17
Unless you've clearance between the small end of the tapered "Plug" and the valve body it won't seal. Only way to ensure a good seal is to recut the tapers at one machining setting, re-lapping seldom (as you already know) works.

  Regards  Ian.
Thread: Brazing torch
24/03/2010 10:50:55
Wonder if the O/P really wants to "Braze"?? Seems the weapons of choice in the past, ie. the five and two pint blowlamps, are long gone.

Perhaps MUCH too dangerous for the elfins to allow muppets to operate.

  Regards  Ian.
Thread: MEW 162 - Phoenix Battery Drills
23/03/2010 10:43:30
Most of todays battery powered DIY toys have Nimh cells fitted which was/is supposed to eliminate the "Whisker" theory so it's pointless Zapping them.

Yes, I agree, the frivolous comments should not be taken any notice of, Percival will be rotating at a dangerous speed that some may regard a serious forum to be used for sutch waggery.

  Regards Ian
Thread: cutting morse taper
23/03/2010 10:29:08
Rabbited before, weapons of choice are a tailstock centre (center) offsetting tool fitted with ball ended centres (centers).

One thing nobody else has mentioned, Is it neccessary in the O/P's design to have a full length face?? An inch (25mm) at either end with a relieved bit in between would still be accurate, providing the angle settings were correct.

  Regards  Ian
Thread: MEW 162 - Phoenix Battery Drills

No, but you could get black ink to print on black paper and then the grubby finger marks wouldn't show.

  Regards  Ian.
22/03/2010 11:16:33
Whichever plugs and sockets one uses, they won't have been designed for connecting a battery operated drill to a dedicated power supply.

Yes Nicholas, that's why I've been castigated many times for playing c**p about the more "learned" showing photos on forums of dangerous practices and excusing it by saying "I've been a machinist for XXX years"

If brains were --- some couldn't even blow their hats off.

Thread: cylinder for hot air engine
22/03/2010 10:57:26
Another source for power cylinders, with a smooth bore are automotive shock absorbers, Rissos books on simple hot air engines give a variety of sources for components, worth a look.

   Regards  Nother Ian.
Thread: 3D in MEW
22/03/2010 10:51:11
It's the 5% that's the problem, it explains why there are so many driving accidents.

  Regards  Ian.
Thread: Lusus Naturae - Drawing Revisions
22/03/2010 10:28:36
Come on guys, where are all the howls of derision at Weary''s mistake??? What it does prove to all those that constantly witter about drawing errors is that even when there is no pressure, how easy it is to get one or two sums wrong?  24 Hrs. from publishing to correction, well done Weary, Once the presses roll it's a public hue and cry.

  Regards  Ian.
Thread: Lament for a lost grease.
21/03/2010 12:24:59
But for lots of the "Kids" the discussion will be about ten feet above there heads.

Pity the newbies haven't sorted the post/ad overlap out yet????

  Regards   Ian.
Thread: Cad for complete beginners (CAD for idiots)
21/03/2010 12:20:45
Ya missed "DoubleCad" John, (From the same people as TurboCad and ALSO same rules as AutoCad).

WHATEVER you want to play with Ray, don't be conned into paying vast amounts for an Acad system you will NEVER utilise to the full. There are too many FREE ones out there.

  Regards  Ian
20/03/2010 11:29:58
If you check in the search mode, this subject has been covered quite a few times.

  Regards  Ian.
Thread: Riveting
19/03/2010 12:54:52
Perhaps at some point David will reproduce the screw down riveting tool articles that have been in M/E in the past.

  Regards  Ian.
Thread: MEW 162 - Phoenix Battery Drills
19/03/2010 12:46:41
And just to re titilate on this one, how many CIRCUIT DIAGRAMS  have been printed incorrectly in the past, reversed positive and negative notations for instance???? The same Graphics persons that got mechanical dimensions incorrect have also managed this one.

Given the six combinations that SOME can achieve when wiring a 13A plug, it is not very reassuring and makes one realise why you now need a skilled sparky to fit a fuse.

  Regards  Ian

Thread: Q1 Boiler bush sizes
18/03/2010 12:32:14
Did the article go on to describe the boiler fittings?? At one time. only the rich could afford to BUY fittings, you only paid for taps and dies once. (Perviding you were careful)

  Regards  Ian.
Thread: MEW 162 - Phoenix Battery Drills
18/03/2010 12:29:08
Certainly make it easier to test the line connection
18/03/2010 11:09:56
WARNING! If you stand in front of a bus you are likely to DIE if it hits you. Anyone attempting electrical work without knowing what the're doing or obeying basic safety rules deserves to be rushed into hospital for another cell to be implanted. Trouble is, it would probably be lonely.

If the HSE entered ANY of our workshops they would put a closure notice on them, we ALL "Risk" it at times as has been proved many times on THIS forum. Sadly the words COMMON SENSE seem to have dissapeared from our vocabulary.

Far better, on the cover of BOTH M/E and MEW, in 120 point, David should insist the words CAVEAT EMPTOR be printed in bright red.

   Regards  Ian.
Thread: cutting morse taper
16/03/2010 14:29:28
Shame on you DC1, it was described in ME with various pikkys within the last 15 years.

Edit, Sorry, breaking my gob in for a fool AGAIN, Peter got the article, that's the one I remember.
