" explaining how to climb a frightful hill" Try that on Post Hill. A mate was going to try that on a Tiger Cub, we'd seen this on a monochrome (Black and white 405 line) tele in the early sixties. Got to the top, by walking, and looked down it, didn't happen. On the way there though, he stopped to look at a Vinnie Rapide C in immaculate condition for sale. Went out for a test ride with the owner, came back and bought it - - - - £100. Regards Ian. |

The good old EE "Brauner" Pulse jet. Used this as a redraw when being taught AutoCAD. Engineering firm I worked at the time had facilities to make a "Flypress" punch and die for the valve but saw the electro-etch video. Another "Round tuit" project although did have a banana shaped tailpipe in stainless made. Link mentioned by Keith is :- http//aardvark.co.nz/pjet Regards Ian.

Was stunned to learn that the Chemical firm at the bottom of my garden were carrying out a pressurised process (which failed) resulting in neighbours in close proximity being compensated for their washing hung out to dry and having cars parked close to the "occurrence" being professionally cleaned. As an Ingineer I was horrified to learn the ONLY safety feature on the process was a burst disc. Regards Ian. |

Thread: How not to use a clamp |

Oh dear, so many "BUTS". My mentors would probably have heeded the advise had it been given BEFORE many of them lost bits if their anatomy to retrospectively teach me not to loose mine. "Them as can do and them as can't teach" Yep, brilliant philosophy, but let's not forget, SOME can do both, gained from years of the former while retaining most of their soft bits intact. Regards Ian. |

Ahhh, the road to hell and all that. At least the clamping bolt is at the correct end of the clamp slot. Pulled off another popular forum years ago due to lack of safety considerations and the "BUT" excuse to justify their stupidity. One a long qualified "Machinist" showing a milling cutter mounted in a drill chuck, and a Phoenix who after a decade still hasn't learned how to clamp safely but is hacknolegged as a resident ex-spurt. The use of stepped packing blocks would have been luxury had we not had to chase round finding suitable bits of packing in my industrial apprenticeship and sorry Oldiron, the fact the poster is "a very experienced machinist" does not excuse a potentially unsafe setup. Sadly, when a photo is posted on t'internet, there is no discrimination for it to decide whether the viewer is knowledgeable or a dobbin waiting for an accident to happen. Regards Ian.

Had one a couple of days ago from DVLC claiming my account didn't have enough in it to pay my direct debit car tax, proceedings etc. Gave me a link to provide details like Car registration number??? Would have thought that would be obvious EXCEPT, don't have a car registered in my name. Bits of bad English inamongst DOH! Regards Ian. |

Yes Martin re the capacitor saga BUT only certain manufacturers are fit for purpose when it comes to replacement and in many cases (bad pun) size (physical) does matter. Regards Ian. |

My mantra always was, "Call me what you want, just pay me my worth and this on a sliding upward scale when you recognise my value" Too many have been paid on the strength of paper qualifications. In the past, had to teach too many Chief Draftsmen, Production Ingineers and Works "Managers" how many beans make five. Regards Ian |

Not just today Derek, Luckily, sixty years ago, I ignored the comments of the overall clad teenagers on the top deck of a smoke filled bus decrying engineering. I had a super time (mostly) despite being a PROPER apprentice with wages to match. Regards Ian. |

Wonder if it's classed as "Metalwork" and "Woodwork" or lumped into "Art and Design."? Just shows the lengths (And costs) you have to go to to include a "Practical" education, pity the working class politicians were allowed ruin the education system and kill the pipe rack and poker generating facilities. Wonder haw many if those shown will go on to operate machinery rather than just driving a screen? Surprised that they're not all wearing Hazmat suits. Regards Ian. |

Totally screws the "Split charge" facility unless you can charge both car and caravan at same time but only if caravan had a Lithium monstrosity fitted. Pity KR200 had such a poor engine, retrofit was a Honda 250. Regards Ian. |

Wonder how many cell block shapes it will generate? Given the variations of shapes and sizes the existing car manufacturers use to ensure you replace with a "Branded" replacement and it won't be a Saturday afternoon two spanner changeover. Regards Ian. |

Another toe of snail alchemy trick. Many years ago, the Miller charging system on my Velocette Venom gave up the ghost. My lowly apprentice wages didn't allow an immediate repair/replacement and as the battery only did the lights, (Mag Ignition) my twenty mile round trip to work only needed side lights and yes, depth of winter, a bit of a necessity. Charge used to last for one days usage so when someone suggested emptying battery and flushing out with warm washing soda it was nowt to loose. First couple of flushings gave effervescent reaction (acid neutralization by alkali) but after that, a couple more swillouts before clean water finals and finally replacing electrolyte resulted in full charge lasting three days. Charging system was replaced later thanks to the Prince of darkness but the forgoing was a welcome stopgap. Regards Ian. |
