Think I would prefer a 10 point turn with an electric pallet truck than a hernia. Would have loved the inconvenience rather than having to deliver d*mn great B&O television sets ( two man lift ) using handraulics. Given the picture of the assault coarse from the road to the workshop door, the construction of a special size pallet "just in case", how much extra does Joe public want to pay for the privilege??

When the statement on walking a mile in someone elses shoes is quoted, try heavy deliveries.

How many urban myths have been generated by an excess of "Disposable" income? Sorry, I'm of the old f*rt brigade when tools for the lathe were either carbon or HSS and a "Wimmet" tipped tool was held in holy reverence even in industry where the machinery had the b***s to cope with strong cuts. Then accountants drove the "Faster cheaper" economy and I remember our toolroom foreman virtually breaking down into tears when the SKF rep told us to use the "New" three flute weldons once and chuck them away. as opposed to machining the tool steel blanks to make the punches for my avatars components by co-ordinate milling on Sir Johns nemesis, a Bridgey. using a "Rougher", then a "Smoother" and finally a "Fine finisher". All this was emphasised with a "Film" showing the embryonic "Computer Numerically Controlled" ( no acronyms at that time) milling machines cleaving gert lumps of Aluminium for the aerospace industry.

Save thi brass Matt and learn the relaxed version of hobby machining.

It's well known that if you stand in front of a cylindrical dome ended piece of Lead travelling rather quickly the results can be life changing. Do the boxes containing quantities of these carry a health warning???

I wonder how many ton(nne)s of domestic electronic equipment reside in recycling centres due to failed Leadless solder joints?

Was taught many, many, many moons ago how to solder by me dear departed pater whose mantra was "Killed spirits" for tinplate constructions and "Ersin 60/40" for electronic builds.

My three reels of Ersin, when prised from my cold dead hands are willed to my lads.

Heresy, Slips are a must have, just as a Mifford is the only ME tool to have. Used a slip gauge set many years ago when I was a prentice toolmaker, a micro screw jack and mics substitute for the "Adjustable packings" housed in either a wooden or plastic case.

Second printer rip off, first being ink supplies.

Ink pads are easy enough to replace or wash out but you need gloves, very messy. There are/were resetting programmes on t'internet for various printers, download, click and the printer internal counter is zeroed.. Fitted a CISS system to my Epson C62 years ago and waste ink tank and saved hundreds of pounds.

Instead of running a nozzle cleaning operation, was advised to just run a best quality photo print, cleans all the nozzles and uses far less ink.

At the time we bought the Epson, all in ones were in the hundreds of pounds and single printers cheap. How times have changed, the price structure has reversed. Try buying a dedicated ink jet printer with SEPARATE ink tanks cheaply now.

Initiative? Wonder how many of todays "Managers" can flip between fractions, decimals and metric measurements WITHOUT a smart(?) phone let alone the great unwashed. Used to be par for the coarse before electronic calculators, computers and t'internet and non disposable income. Wonder how many muddle ingineers are working to microns, obviously outworkers for the Swiss watch industries where interchangability is a necessity? Fitting seems to be a forgotten art for one offs.

Don't be lured by the "Myford" cult syndrome. There are many lathes out there that are equal if not better. Bought my Maximat V10 years ago on closure of firm I worked for, used to go down to the workshop at lunchtime to use it for my jobs. Three phase motor driven by a FIXED converter, no thyristors or power transistors to pop or brushes to burn out. Dual speed motor gives eight head speeds. Size wise, it's made quite a few 60mm dia hinge "pins" with an M42 x 4mm pitch thread on one end for a mates bucket and grab loader.

Many of the Myford size Chinese (used to be Taiwanese) lathes are rip offs of the Emco lathes and even now, the basic castings for the new Emcos come from the land of the rising yuan.

Assess your needs, if second hand, know its history and if new, check the vendors pedigree. Never ceases to amuse, "10mm lathe tool suitable for Myford lathe", obviously no good for my Emco.

Have a disk of chipboard fastened to the faceplate on my Maximat. "Disks" to be cut are glued to this with double sided tape and a "pressure" pad with a centre drilled in it pushed onto it with a revolting centre in the tailstock. Basically "Trepanning" but keeping the centre disk. Make sure the cut diameter is fully supported on backing plate, ie. to cut disk 100mm dia. backing disk should be at least 120mm dia.

As an apprentice, it used to get exciting trepanning ring guages from 3/8" gauge plate.

 Weapon of choice for turning is a parting tool fed from cross slide.

Had my first one on 3/2/21. Local health centre rang me a couple of days before and appointment was 3.20 pm. Arrived at 3.15 and had to wait a couple of minutes before being sent to one of the consulting rooms. Was asked a series of questions pertaining to allergies and had I been a "Test Monkey?" Quick jab and handed a sheet of info and the "First jab" card. Asked if i could sit i the car for 15mins instead of the plague pit (waiting room) which they OK'd and sat back in car at 3.30. Felt OK and went home. Following day felt as though I'd been beaten up but day after that, fine.
