Thread: Coming Soon : The shutdown of 3G |

Since you now have to 'Register' to watch call back on most TV channels, am getting a bit tired of arguing with Alexa that it tells me I have to register within five days if I want it to play Radio two. Wonder if the slitherers in the crypt are looking at reinstating the Radio licence for non TV slaves? Regards Ian. |

Thread: What adhesive - that shrinks when it sets - do you recommend for melamine laminate sheets? |
01/04/2022 14:51:25 |
Yep, the idea of having the boards double sided to help stop bowing is good. taking facing off the two surfaces to bond to each other solves that, still faced on outer sides after bonding. Problem is, however you do it, without a laminate press you can't ensure, at that size they will be flat parallel faces. Unfaced 32mm MDF is available so you could face both sides with laminate using 'Cascomite' (Ahh remember it well for making toy boats) but when mixed, add a few drops of Meths to disperse air bubbles in mix. Regards Ian. |

Yep, kitchen worktop, 32mm thick available but 1000mm wide? Regards Ian. |

Sadly Dave , ALL technology is not driven by necessity, most today seems to be down to gullibility. Regards Ian |

And the shift from A to D on TV was to purely release frequencies for the mobile phone wallies. Just like the BBC, land lines are becoming redundant. Big problem if BT are going to kill copper feed for T'internet, I'm linked to a box that they state isn't connected to fibre, and NEVER will be so stuck with a slow expensive service by yackety yack unless I change to super thieves. How thick are the 1000mm square panels? Are they Melamine faced or SRBP -Formica faced. If the former, delaminate the faces to be bonded together and use a wood glue. Regards Ian. |
Thread: Why aren't carbide chop saws used? |
31/03/2022 10:07:25 |
Yes Nick and I can bet you've seen the antics of SOME in industry using them. Number of times I had to replace the roll pin on one saw and even recut M16 left hand thread allen screws to retain a HSS blade. The thought of bits of chipped carbide flying about beggers belief. Lot to be said for good old handraulic tools. Tis after all a hobby. Regards Ian. |

Nearly bought a gallon of WD40 years ago @£26 but was advised by a supplier to buy 'Duck Oil' @ £12 a gallon. Worked for me. Regards Ian. |
Thread: Advice on Cluttered Dimensions in Drawings |
23/03/2022 12:18:00 |
Regarding mass production, do they still use 2D drawings or just send a file electronically ? Don't know, and now care even less. The ability to send drawings add lib at the speed of light by one national customer that had different dimensions at different times WITHOUT changing the drawing issue have long gone. Regards Ian. |
Thread: Rulers - my pet peeve |

Used to get a smack on the back of the ed if caught using the end of the rule to measure. "Long rules can be shortened", yep especially the zero end. Regards Ian. |

Sorry if your sensitivities have been offended Jon but when 'Theoretical' P/C rears its ugly head, as a PRACTICAL ingineer of over fifty years (now long retired) in the manufacture (yes, got me hands mucky and cut as an apprentice), design and specification of components and items for the mechanical, electrical and electronic industries, I think I can validate my reply. With all due respect, last time I read BS (aptly acronymed) 308 was when a copy was stuffed under my nose after being 'promoted' into the D/O. Last time I used it practically was as a packing shim under a wobbly table. For those who glibly quote DROs and rotary tables, haven't seen many companies with 32ft long versions for one or two off requirements. But we are making toys and trying to apply 'Theoretical industrial standards' interrupts getting the show on the road. If your drawings are to be used for mass production, they are to a different standard than Joe Soap making a one off, NOT to say that the interactive dimensions shouldn't work but when some start bleating "What about tolerances", we're making one off toys for our own amusement, not 10,000. Going back to the O/Ps original problem, two solutions, move the component to the left a bit on the drawing or use a bigger bit of paper. Even with the 'Constraints' of slavishly following BS308, with a pencil and rule you still have the ability to 'do your own thing' but with Acad and ALL its clones, unless you can find all the hidden tweaks, you're limited to drawing lines but the program(me) determines annotation styles. Regards Ian. And for the blue pencil brigade, You might not like what I say, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong. Edited By Circlip on 23/03/2022 10:20:24 |

Thread: stuff that came with my lathe ... |

After disposing of what you regard to be superfluous, just think of the poor guy that buys your lathe when you've curled your toes up and advertises "Has anyone got a set of screw cutting gears for a - - - - - " Regards Ian. |

Just read the garbage about NOT chaining dimensions. RUBBISH. Even our lowly toys refute that. Try using a common datum when trying to locate a cylinder with eight mounting holes and forget all your fancy measuring systems. One hole is datum and the rest are chained from it. Straight line dimensions would work but what about an angled cylinder? Try the one datum rule on tooling to produce more than a thousand holes in a printed circuit board with metric AND imperial pitched components.

Strangely enough, layout was one of the skills taught when I was "Promoted" into the D/O fifty odd years ago. Unfortunately thanks to the advent of cheap drawing programmes, everyone can become an instant draughtsman which is fine for drawing straight and parallel lines and true circles but not basic principles. With a sheet of paper, the O/Ps problem never occurred and for large items, a scale rule came into operation. Important when items are constrained by A4,3.2.1 and 0 sized sheets to put them on. Only got an A4 printer? Go to a print shop. Regards Ian. |

If you go to the 'Madmodder' site, :-MadModder - Index there are various tutorials for servicing many different types of dial indicators. 'Search' works well.
