Thread: Northumbrian AXLE BOX SPRINGS
08/03/2010 13:28:09
For chris and anyone else who has not used piano wire before, don't try cutting with a pair of pliers or sidecutters unless you want to damage the cutting edges. Small cut off wheel in a dremel type tool is probably the best option. Don't think you really need to go for stainless in this application, save it for safety valve springs etc, the cheaper piano (music) wire will do the job. The model aircraft shops keep it in about 36" or 1m lengths, a 0.5 kg coil from Reeves will last several lifetimes.

Actually I think it would be better to have the "latest posts" tab rather than the "more topics one at the bottom of the latest posts box, what do you think?? As it is now I have to click more topics which takes me to the forum list and from there click latest posts.

Thread: Dave Park's 2-Stroke
08/03/2010 12:38:53
Finally got round to reading about this engine in issue 4372 and noticed a couple of issues with the drawings.

Fig 9. The 4.5mm dimension is given against the length of the lower liner but should be the width of the central band.

Fig 14. There are no lenths given except the counterbored hole, should be about another 5 before the part can be made. Also ther lift of the cam is not given, just the duration.

Apart from that nice drawings.

PS Hope I'm not getting a reputation for nit picking

While we are on about pitches can someone tell me if the small 1/4 x32 spark plugs are threaded ME or the not very common UNEF?

Thread: What type of STEEL?

And here is one that will give you 58different standards from 36 countries, think David would have to fill several volumes to cover it all

I'll take the easy question on what they look like, someone else can tackle another of your questions.

1. Cast iron - this is generally a dark grey with a matt finish when cut. In the form continuous cast bar it will show small ridge lines along its length.

2-8 these will all look virtually the same. Drill rod is the American term for silver steel so these are the same. The only way to tell them apart is to do a spark test, a bit of searching on the web should give you some info. Stainless will in most cases be non-magnetic.

9 Gun Metal (and the leaded bronzes) this has an orange/yellow colour to it and is quite soft. The cast bar can have a slight spiral pattern around the outside of the rod.

Thread: Scale Models of workshop machinery? Lathes, millers, grinders etc...
03/03/2010 07:36:57
Stuarts do a few machine tools in their range, the builds have been covered in ME by Anthony Mount

The ones in MEW are likely to be scratch built

Thread: Imported Lathes - Which one
01/03/2010 17:37:14
Quillstar have a few M300 at what looks a reasonable price, a Colchester 1800, 200 or 2500 would be another option. Just make sure it comes with chucks & steadies as these can add up if you have to buy them separately

Look under Trade sales

I've had one of teh Warco WM280VF lathes for about 18 months and am quite happy with it but would not want to use it in a work enviroment.

Thread: Elbow Engine

if you look at the icons along the top of the reply box, the one on the right hand end has a you-tube logo, click on that, paste the link into the top line.

One problem with this site is you can onlt edit your posts for a short while after posting, thats why you can't see the edit tab. Hopefully a mod will remove the long link again.

There is no problem with the number or postition of adds on the site until someone posts a long url into a post.

Its that long url you are adding to your elbow engine post thats doing it.

Looks like David tried to correct things but cut the link short, I've posted the link so can you edit your post to remove the url.

Just paste the you tube URL into the top of the page that comes up when you click the you-tube icon at the top of your posting

Please edit your post to remove that long URL as its is mucking up the page width.

Thread: Milling cutters

Whats the bore of your cutters?

A milling arbour should do the job, your size of cutter is no bigger than an involute gear cutter so should be doable

Thread: marking blue
19/02/2010 19:59:46
I just use a small artists paint brush. Don't need to clean between uses as any dried blue on the brush will soften as soon as you dip it in again.

Thread: turning a 120 degree valve spindle point
19/02/2010 16:24:21
Won't that give a 60deg included angle, the topslide needs rotating to 60deg whichever direction you turn the work and if it only goes to 45 each way it cant be done that easily.

Thread: Anthony Mount Rectilinear Engine

This link will take you to some pictures of a cross engine, if you then click "bauabschnittan" at the bottom right it will take you to photos of the build.

It looks like he made the crank split down the centreline and then used two screws to clamp it onto the crankshaft and pins.
