But what are the good designs, what makes a good pump. I would like to spend my time makeing a good design then a bad design.

I need a test pump for a boiler test, around 5 inch gauge loco size. Has anyone got a good design for a pump that I could make in a day or so. I have all the normal tools one would expect.

Be careful and check before you buy. I ordered a pack of round section steel bars, some years ago.Amost half of the weight of the pack was made up by very small sections which are only good for mixing glue. As some time has passed I am not sure of which firm I ordered from. I did ring and complain and received a second pack, again largely made up with 2mm or so rods.

The first Shute novel that I read was "Around the Bend " about a charter air business set in the middle east. A very good read.

The 127/100 gear is permently mounted in the gear train, so the swop from imp to metric takes me around one minute.

I have had in the past myford, and underdrive Boxfords and currently I use a modern Boxford.

The only item that if seens to be missing is the headstock bush, The standard headstock taper is a version of 4.5mt and the bush takes this down to 3mt. New bushes are available from Boxford

. I see that it comes with a lagre set of gears, this with the 3 lever gearbox and standard 127 toth gear will let you cut just about any thread imp and metric you should want.

I would be happy to bid up to £1500. The harded beds just do not wear in a shool setting, but watch out for any dings.

I do not mind OT threads but i do want the title to be informative.Titles like "Is it just me" are hopeless. A lot o MEW readers are not steam modelers but reparir and build bikes and cars.

The H.Hall tool holder we had some time ago,so that is a repeat. Nothing of great intrest in this issue.

My late model AUD would not start on top speed on very cold days. I just use to warm it up by running it on a slow speed for 5 mins.

While I check this forum most days, it is the traction engine and steamboats sites that I would miss if they get pulled.

I have used the high temp stuff to repair a traction engine cylinder (1/3 scale) where i drilled too deep. I also find that it does slump quite a lot. I also use milliput as a filler in where i just needed a gap filler. I suppost it is a case of having 3 or 4 different types for the partiular work in hand.

Why do you not recomend the fast set or marine type. I just finished my high temp JB weld ( red and black ) and was thinking about getting the fast set next time. I find that the high temp needs at least 24 hours to set. When i do not require the high temp this long time is a bit of a pain.

I just ordered some 1inch and 2 inch leaded bronze bar in 2 inch lenght. But this was for a particular job. Buying cheap on spec I would order by at lest one foot.

I rate my shaper top with the bandsaw second.

Every brazed tip tool that i have brought has required to be sharpened. This included a multi tip face milling cutter that came with a second hand mill, The first owner had tried the cutter and saild it was hopeless, i sharpened all the tips and find it cuts OK.

So my point is even if you ordered a 55 deqree point tool, i would not expect to use it without a touch up on the grinding wheel.

I know that this means they can supply the same tool what ever the angle you ordered.!!!

This only applies to brazed tip tooling tooling, HSS tooling i find if better finished.

Same here with my boxford. 4.5 MT to 3MT bush in the headstock. Still availabe new from boxford.
