I am trying to finish off the jobs on my Little Samson that I put off until later. Later is now, today i have cut the keyway on the crank for the flywheel, two smaller ones to finish the crank and then cut the internal keyway in the flywheel itself. This is about 31/2 inches long so looking for a broach to do the job, 1/4 inch keyway.

Full marks to Internalfire for they charging policy. Armed Forces: No charge. I have never seen this before from anyone, well done.

I have not been there for quite a long time ,as my family no longer live in the area, but i visted quite a few times in the early days. They were very wecoming and always adding to the collection.

They also ran the engines not just a static display and would start the engines up when I was the only vistor.

I ended up soaking them in a jam jar of vinager for 24 hours and then put into the dishwasher on a hot cycle. They came out , very clean. The heavy disposits all gone.

In a earlier thread there was some talk about people buying these type of grinders as general tool and cutter grinders, when in fact they are designed just readly for single lip cutters.

I have found tucked under my bench, a set of 3 cock gauge fittings in a very heavy corroded state.Brass or Bronze?. I have just dunked them a jar of vinegar to see if they can be recovered. Any other ideals for removing the hard green substance. Also when I remove them from the vinegar apart from a good wash in water anything else should I do?

I think you may be wrong here, in one of the steam clubs i am in there is around 1000 members. There is a very good website but less than 20% of members have logged onto it including the newer members. There will always be a place for printed material over the web. I for one enjoy reading back issues of engineering/steam mags I do not want to be trawling the web for the same stuff. I get enouth of computers at work.

I have one of these, with a decent blade it is a OK saw.

I have a hand pump for inflating for boats/beds tha sort of thing. Dia is around 4 inch and the stroke is around 12 inch. All plastic and double acting, pumps on the down and up stokes. Around 100 pumps per min at max but you would need a replacement pumper after a couple of minutes at that rate.

I am yet to have my first cup of tea, so may be a bit off. However i would have doubled the number of tubes and put in couple of solid stays.

I all ways liked the use of the terms bare and full when applied to sizes.

Good to hear of more traction engine builds. I am also buidling a 4 inch Little Samson. Taken me about 4 years so far with a least 1 more to go. There are some very good build series of the Little Samson on TractionTalk forum.

Ripper cutters are available in both fine and rough grades. I use mine to cut steel and cut turning up the SFM and Feed intil i get nice purple chips flying off. The fine cutters leave a OK finsh for items you are not going to handle.

I started work again on my Little Sampson Traction engine. Using the shaper to produce some of the levers.

Very intrested in the rolls, I have been toying with the ideal of making a set myself. My first attempt at the chinney could be better.

Our local paper the Wirral Globe has a piecelast week about a new hovercraft route, If if remember from the top to of the Wirral to somewhere along the North Wales coast. To start in 2014 or 2015.

I use the Chester version without the power downfeed. I am very pleased with it. Bigger table and travels than the common belt drive machines. The height under is head is vast, Mine has a MT4 taper. Taper gibs, the only real downside is only 6 speeds with a fairly low top speed of 1600 rpm, The head is very heavy when it comes to tramming it. It makes a very good s/h buy.

As a first step I would ask your local chemist shops if they can take it. Boots took a bottle of conc Sulphuric from me a few years ago and did not charge. If not then try your local council if they know anywhere local to you to take it. I do not think your fire brigade will take it. I used lots of acids at work mostly HF back in the 80/90's and all of the HF was in plastic bottles.

You may also read in some books that the height of the tool has to be exactly on the center height or the taper will turn out barrel shaped,

This is a bit of a red herring as Geo.H Thomas worked out that as long as you are around 20 thou or so of the center heigth the amount of barrel shapping is so small you not be able to measure it.

just before I read this thread I watched a very good video on UTube about shaping a 5/8 tool bit using a 7 inch angle grinder. A lot quicker than using most off hand grinders found in home workshops. It will then need to be sharpened.
