Thread: scale bolt sizes |
05/05/2011 13:39:10 |
I have recently been faced with a similar problem deciding the size of nuts bolts and studs to use on the 1/12 scale extrusion press that I am making. On my CAD system I drew up the BA range 14BA to OBA at 1:1 then scaled them by times 12. Using these on the 1:1 drawing of the press, when I divided this 1:1 drawing by 12 I then had the correct looking BA fixings for the model.

Thank you for all of your contributions BUT I would like to get this thread back on to its original question I would like to know before I spend to £200 to £300 on equipment if it is possible assuming that I acquire the necessary skill to produce a miniature weld that would any where near replicate at 1/12 scale the type of construction the that in real engineering practice makes a component / structure by seam welding 2 - 3 inch steel plates together? |
08/01/2011 08:31:47 |
To more accurately represent the machine I am trying to model I would like to be able to electric weld some of the steel parts together. In particular a fillet of 1.5 mm when joining a piece of 1mm sheet to a 4mm plate. Has any one any experience achieving this. |
Thread: TCT LATHE TOOLS |

I recently bought "the diamond tool holder" and I can tell you it works very well ( see add half way down on the right) in my opinion its better than the tipped tools I have. and its so easy to keep 100% sharp all the time providing you have a grinder. see the youtube video

Thread: Drill Sharpening Jigs - Advice please. |
07/11/2010 09:14:38 |
This is just an idea for discussion, as I have not yet the skill or understanding to complete the task The idea if possible would easily off set the cost of a machine if some of the prices mentioned are a viable option or at least help to justify the cost. As small CNC mills / lathes are now becoming more available in the Model Engineering environment would it be possible to use a small diamond wheel and write a G-code program to sharpen a drill. The size of the drill and the angle could be entered as data the datum could be the end of the drill the centre line of the quill or headstock is already known by the machine. As I am writing this I can see that the position of the flutes would also have to be located. Has anyone any further thoughts on this? Is already done? |

Thread: Finished model too good |
16/10/2010 19:16:00 |
I my experience the judges judge quality of the work the have many years of experience and would know what is a good model and what is not. It takes as much skill to produce a straight out of the box finish as it does to make a finish to represent a working condition. Then there is the difference between the factory drawings and what the builder's workshop actual produced. The end of a steel section could have original been flame cut or surface ground or any thing in between. You then get in to the discussion of what is authentic the drawing or the product and so it goes on. A good model is a good model and you can see that it is. |

If faced with a similar situation I would start with the Science Museum you could spend all day there
Check with SMEE to see if there is someone at home on the day At I was warmly welcomed given a conducted tour of the building from the archive on the top floor to the machine tools in the basement. I also had a coffee and a chat. Then on to see the Harrison clocks at Greenwich (read the book Longitude first) If there was time left a walk down the hill to the Naval Museum Paul Boscott Edited By Paul Boscott on 26/09/2010 17:30:27 |
