I would like to know before I spend to £200 to £300 on equipment if it is possible assuming that I acquire the necessary skill to produce a miniature weld that would any where near replicate at 1/12 scale the type of construction the that in real engineering practice makes a component / structure by seam welding 2 - 3 inch steel plates together?

To more accurately represent the machine I am trying to model I would like to be able to electric weld some of the steel parts together. In particular a fillet of 1.5 mm when joining a piece of 1mm sheet to a 4mm plate. Has any one any experience achieving this.

 This is just an idea for discussion, as I have not yet the skill or understanding to complete the task

The idea if possible would easily off set the cost of a machine if some of the prices mentioned are a viable option or at least help to justify the cost.

As small CNC mills / lathes are now becoming more available in the Model Engineering environment would it be possible to use a small diamond wheel and write a G-code program to sharpen a drill.

The size of the drill and the angle could be entered as data the datum could be the end of the drill the centre line of the quill or headstock is already known by the machine.

As I am writing this I can see that the position of the flutes would also have to be located.

Has anyone any further thoughts on this? Is already done?

I my experience the judges judge quality of the work the have many years of experience and would know what is a good model and what is not.

I was warmly welcomed given a conducted tour of the building from the archive on the top floor to the machine tools in the basement. I also had a coffee and a chat.

Then on to see the Harrison clocks at Greenwich (read the book Longitude first)

If there was time left a walk down the hill to the Naval Museum
