And if you do take out a subscription you will get to access the digital back issues via this site at no extra cost.
J
I wasn't aware of that. Access to every MEW ever printed?
Is the subscription for the paper version? If so I will definitely subscribe.
Not all of the back issues - about the last 3 - 4 years worth. You need to take out an MEW Digital Archive subscription to access ALL the back issues.

Shame I found out about the free entry on Sunday after I bought them!

Thread: Digital Issues on iPad |

The new viewer uses flash as well.
I have just tried looking at issue 179 using IE, for which I do not have flash installed. It just gave an error screen saying I need to install flash player.
Maybe the lack of flash on the iPad is still causing you problems?

Thread: Living with the digital copies |
07/06/2011 19:32:44 |
With the Digital Machinist magazine, it can be zoomed out to full screen which makes for a decent sized screen grab.
However, with ME/MEW, even if the window is enlarged to full screen, the magazine image doesn't fill more than about a 1/4 of the total screen area. Plus the resolution is lousy.
So yes, it is too much trouble to do that for these magazines in the current electronic form.

Printing may be disabled, but you can still capture the screen image using <shift-prtscr>, then paste the image into an image editor for cropping and printing.
A bit more work than just printing each page, but still won't stop you producing a stand-alone edition of the magazine to view offline.
I think the model engineers who contributed to this magazine were interested in CNC!

Hi David,
I have to disagree with your comment about the print quality from the new eMag creator software.
Attached are two screengrabs taking of my PDF viewer displaying MEW 153 p13.
The first was printed from the website when the old magazine viewer software wass being used.
The second was taken a few minutes ago from the website.
Both times the same computer was used, with the same PDF printer software (PrimoPDF).
OK, the second one is readable (to an extent), but it is not easy on the eyes at all. The text is quite pixellated and some words are not easy to decipher.

Thread: New I/C diesel project - ETA15d-x2 |
22/05/2011 23:51:50 |
The how-to on how to make the contra-pistons is on Ron's website under 'Resources', 'FAQ', then item number 8.
If you want to navigate there directly, it is on page 6 of the Weaver construction log.
These pages mention an *external* 1 degree inluded angle taper on the contra. The OD is the only place the taper can be cut into when the contra is temporarily fixed to a mandrel by it's ID.
![]() I have used this method exclusively to make contra's for my Diesel engines, and it hasn't let me down (other than mistakes on my part).
Keep up the excellent work Ramon.

Thread: Altivar 28 Inverter |
17/05/2011 14:31:37 |
Inverters (especially modern ones) should have their outputs connected directly to the motor with no switchgear in-between.
I expect that you are getting no output because the inverter is detecting the open circuit on its outputs due to the switches being open.
Direction and speed control should all be controlled via the logic and analogue inputs to the inverter.

Definitely of interest - keep the updates coming!
Your updates will hopefully inspire me to get back out to the workshop.
![]() I have lots of smaller 'works-in-progress', but my main project in particular is taking up all of my time - she is about 7 months old now and growing rapidly!

Hmm, the curse of the Hampshire postal black hole strikes again!
I did receive issue 4393 on the 20th Dec, MEW172 on the 21st, but am still waiting for 4394.
Come to think of it, I have had hardly any post since Xmas, but see the postman walking by most days...

Thread: Switching between lathe and mill (3 phase) |
11/01/2011 17:55:44 |
Most inverter manuals advise against having any sort of contactor or switch connected between the output of the inverter and the motor it is controlling. I guess this is to avoid an open circuit fault condition which could damage the IGBTs on the output of the inverter. The idea of using an industrial plug to switch between the two machines is probably the most feasible idea, but then careful choice of the type of plug should be given to ensure the integrity of the screeing is maintained. |

Ron Chernich's Model Engine News website - http://www.modelenginenews.org - for Jan 2011 features a Nemett Bobcat twin built by a Ron Palmer in Spain.
Maybe if you get in contact with Ron C, he can pass on the email address of the builder.

Thread: Machining a metric external thread |
05/01/2011 21:03:36 |
Hi all, I have taken on a small job of making an adaptor for an oil pressure gauge on an engine. It will basically be a brass plug with a hex head, threaded externally M24x1.5 to fit in the oil pump, then with a 1/8 BSPT threaded hole in the centre to take the gauge sender unit. Here's the issue:- I do not have access to the oil pump into which the adaptor will fit, so I am in a bit of a quandry as to how to size the thread so that it will fit first time when it received by the person I am making it for. I have a tap for the 1/8" BSP thread, so that is not an issue. Can anyone provide information as to external diameter and thread depth that I should work to to ensure the plug fits right? I do not know what tolerance the internal thread in the pump is made to. There will be a Dowty washer under the hex head of the adaptor to provide a seal, so any oil leaking along loose threads shouldn't be an issue. Thanks in advance, Anthony |

The series "Fine Tuning a Warco BH600G Lathe" by Anthony Mount starts in Vol.190 Issue 4191, p324. First mention of the clutch in the index I have is in Vol.191, issue 4201, page 133. Hope this helps! ![]() |
Thread: Stainless steel mesh |

Strange, as their site was working last night when I tried it, and Googling J A Crew brings up their site straight away. My link didn't work out for some reason - try www.jacrew.net A bit late now as you have already ordered, but it is worth a look around their site as I have found some useful 'odds and ends' on there in the past. A nice chap to deal with as well ![]() Anthony Edited By LADmachining on 10/07/2010 11:35:22 |

I have obtained stainless mesh from J A Crew Engineeing Supplies - sold in pieces 6" square (or other sizes on request. Various mesh sizes up to 100 in stock, others available to order).
Listed on the site under "stainless gauze".

Thread: Bearing Extraction |
01/07/2010 19:02:14 |
So is the bearing still complete within the suspension leg/hub carrier? Easiest way is to find a local garage with a hydraulic press and give the bloke who does it something for his trouble.... Much quicker, less chance of damage, but less fun! |
