I bought 50 mm kingspan sheets 8x4 seconds worked out about a third of the price new. Delivery from wales cost me £30. Plenty of companies advertising on line.

Thread: Cannot open my latest digital copy.
27/01/2021 14:44:54

I find it disappointing that the supplier does not warn people of the problem with viewing the digital copies before they are purchased. I understand Neil's comment above about conversions may be available in the future in the mean time I have paid for a subscription that only partially works. In this age of modern technology I think its poor that the supplier is selling a product that only partially works. enough said rant over I will get back in my box. I assume the same problem affects ME Workshop Magazine.?

I have just subscribed to ME Print and digital. I cannot open any digital editions. Error warning tells me I need Adobe Flash Player. Adobe stopped supporting Flash player 20 December and removed the down load from the internet on 20 January. Adobe are warning users to remove flash player from devices as they cannot guarantee security of the system if it continues to be used. I cannot open any digital editions either on I Pad or my Microsoft Lap top. So I have paid for a subscription that I cannot fully use. I have e mailed admin but am waiting for a reply.

Thread: Imperial V Metric
02/05/2020 11:55:30

Thank you Gentlemen I didn’t make myself clear. I have a full set of drills offering the minor point sizes between the 2-3-4 mm etc.

I was asking in relationship to Milling cutters. My preferred supplier is ARC Euro and they only sell milling cutters in the full mm sizes and not in sizes between the 2-3-4 mm etc.

The steam way I want to cut are not holes in the steam chest but are ports ie the size I require is 2.4 mm wide x 9.25 mm long hence my question do I go up a size or down if I only have milling cutters to the whole mm sizes.

01/05/2020 22:25:15

Thank you Brian. Just noticed my size was wrong and should read 2.4 mm

01/05/2020 22:16:20

I need to cut the steam ways in a steam chest on a cylinder. The sizes on the plans are Imperial but I am working in metric because all my tooling is metric.

steam way size converts to 2.4 mm. I only have 2 mm and 3 mm drills and milling cutters. Which is the preferred option, to drill undersize or the next size up please.

Thread: Indexable Carbide Turning tools

Hi Garry,

The inserts I use has a nose radius of 0.4mm that I find work well for my small lathe where I use a small cutting depth. A larger nose radius will give a stronger edge and can be used for a larger depth of cut. Sandvik has some explanations here.

Thor

Many thanks Thor much appreciated

It's usually taken that the larger radius is for maximum metal removal... 'roughing'...where the larger radius can take more of the cutting forces without too much damage to tip.My inserts are a combination of ccmt/ccgt 060204/02 & HSS diamond tool for the majority of my turning.

George.

Many Thanks George

I own a Chester C3 type mini lathe and use Indexable turning tools. Could somebody explain in easy terms please the advantage or disadvantage of using different size corner radius inserts. EG what difference would a 4mm corner radius make to the stock material over say a 8 mm corner radius.

Thread: Castings, creating a datum before milling

Purists look away now....

I recall having great trouble with some bronze frame castings for a 3.5 inch NG 'Lew' many years ago (I was attending evening classes). I machined the first one and took too much metal off, so purchased a second one and did exactly the same thing again (and No, I've never met Einstein)

I was really 'miffed' shall we say - but Pete (one of the Instructors) said no problem and we walked over to the Welding shop and he soldered a lump of brass on it and then I was able to machine everything to size!

Not best practice but sometimes much better than buying another casting...

Regards,

IanT

Jason thanks for the CAD drawing that makes sense to me and I will adopt it and hopefully make changes as and when other castings need it. As for MEW 289. The one month I don’t buy it there an article that would be useful to me. I can’t get one anywhere at the moment so I’m hoping I can get a back issue next month. Thanks for your time and help it’s very much appreciated as a newbi.

Thanks Ian Advice is gratefully received.

Thanks Martin, Card templates great idea I’ve used them before so must have had a senior moment not to remember them.

20/12/2019 16:16:37

Thank you Jason. Could you just confirm the third line from the bottom “set whet will be the upper “.Not sure how I know the casting would be vertical with your set up in the vice before milling. If it’s not vertical then the base would not be horizontal when milled ?

The Above are castings of the bearing brackets for the Tina Mill Engine.

Having practiced milling on my new mill by making basic clamps I am now ready to mill castings. Can experienced members advise me the best way to get a datum face on the castings before I set them in the milling vice. I think I need to make one face true before I start milling to give me a datum ( is this a true statement) easy simple methods to achieve this will be most welcome.

Thanks for reading.

Thread: Imp to Metric conversion round up or down
16/12/2019 16:17:14

Thank you for the replies. The engine is Tina from GLR Kennions. I was intending to use metric stock and my milling cutters drills etc are in metric. I have just ordered metric hand reamers so hence the question.

Because of the tooling I have I want to convert my mill engine plans to metric from imperial. Is it better to round up the conversion or round down. Ie 7/16 converts to 11.11 mm do I go to 12 mm or down to 11 mm. Thanks for reading

Thread: What size milling tool
06/08/2019 08:45:06

Thank you gentlemen for the tips and method. I’m still looking to find a rule of thumb for the diameter of the mill compared to the width of the stock. I am assuming you would want to have as little passes as possible. Therefore your mill diameter should be wider that the width of stock you are cutting. Is this a fair assumption (Assumming your using the side of the mill to cut) If cutting with the end of the mill does this still apply ?

05/08/2019 21:19:48

I have a piece of 3 mm steel plate that I want to practice milling on to straighten the edges. Is there a rule of thumb for the diameter of the mill in comparison to the thickness off the stock material. I will initially be using my mini lathe with a mill attachment fitted and a ER32 collet chuck
