Never thought of the spinning option, Jason, thanks...

Great Bob, I feel as though I'm on the right track. Seems like there are no baffles in a FS system,so fairly straightforward!

Oddly enough, I NEVER thought to go out and buy one...

Thread: Shrink fit Aluminium tubing
11/05/2015 17:24:13

Hello All!

I am making an exhuast muffler from aluminium. It will comprise of 3 parts; two 'end caps'and an aluminium body.

The body is from 18mm OD tube, the end caps from aluminium stock.

My question is... fitting the end caps, which I intend to press in.... I'll explain.

The ID of the tube is 15.00mm. When I heat the tube (well over 120 degrees) the ID is now 15.10mm. What I intend to do is turn up the end caps ona a lathe, with a shoulder of (say) 15.15mm, heat the tube and then press them in and finish machining the muffler when cool. The tube now grips the end caps.

When the muffler gets hot (attached to a model four stroke engine) then all the aluminium parts should expand at the same rate, keeping the caps in place.

I've looked at commercial mufflers (particularly OS and SC) and they are made with end caps, with no 'weld' being evident.

Should I also reinforce with JB weld or whatever?

Thoughts anyone?

Steve

Thread: Trying to find 16mm slitting saw arbor for lathe
16/09/2014 19:32:42

OK Jason - why didn't I spot those ? Doh..

16/09/2014 19:30:04

I was waiting for that one wink

Yes I could do of course Roy but not too much time available. I have one of those stepped ones which are really useful but only on an imperial size. If there was one off the shelf for a tenner or so I'll consider that !

Hi All..

Ive a couple of slitting saws with 16mm (exact) bore. I'm trying to find an arbor exactly 16mm - all I can find is 5/8 which is too small and the saw runs eccentrically!

It will need a parallel shank as I use it in a lathe...

Any help appreciated!

Thread: Small pillar / bench drill for model making
27/07/2014 11:40:47

Hi all,

I'm looking for a small bench dril ( I have a much bigger Axminster Pillar drill) for model making, say up to 5mm diameter. I've a small X-Y table (proxxon) that will go on to it.

Anyone have any recommendations? I see Axminster do one, but for that price and a wee bit extra I could buy a mill/drill all complete!!

Thanks in advance.

Steve

Hi All...

Appreciate that this is steering towards woodwork (?) but what do you recommend?

I am after a GOOD set, nice and precision for Balsa, soft and the odd bit of hardwood.

I look at it as an investment.

Good choice. No wonder you cant cut anything without tripping - use a lathe tool and not a Swiss Army Knife cheeky

Hi Rik.. That sounds worrying... I have a C-Max as well... What are the circumstances?

"Final thought - can anyone think of a situation when you would want to remotely open all your car windows together on purpose let alone by mistake."

Yes - If your car is full of water and you don't want to be hit by the flood if you open the door. cheeky

It's a bit worrying... either your car windows or my sense of humour...
