I’ve tried it every other way, but it will not move past where you see it in the pictures, maybe it’s faulty somewhere. I’ve only just come across this because it’s the first time I was going to use the boring tool, seems strange to me. chris m….. |

Thread: Update on toolpost bolts |
16/07/2022 12:30:47 |
Hi, the small plunger has never been there; I didn’t even know it had one until I saw a picture of it. the toolpost is fine as it is, but I will see I can make the small little plunger. thanks for the suggestions. chris m…. |

Hi, there is no plunger there, this is how it’s been since I got the ml7. I’ve still been using the toolpost without any problems tho, but was wondering how the ratchet part of it was supposed to work.
I see what you mean tho, I found this picture online which shows the plunger. I don’t have this part I’m afraid. thanks chris m….. Edited By Chris Murphy on 15/07/2022 15:36:10 |

Hi all, I managed to find some of the toolpost bolts I was looking for and they fit perfectly. so if anyone else is looking for these bolts, I got them from Westfield fasteners. one question tho, these 4 way Index toolpost are supposed to be on a ratchet if I’m right, but mine just turns anyway Willy nilly, even tho it seems to work ok and also what is the grub screw and spring for. thanks chris m….. |
Thread: Machinist hammer |
15/07/2022 11:06:52 |
well here’s my first project on my ml7, a machinist hammer. I wouldn’t say it’s top notch, the shaft is a tiny bit wonky, but ITS A START. it wasn’t taken from any particular plan, just a bit of playing around to see what I could come up with. but by doing this project I learnt quite a bit more about how to use a metal lathe. cheers chris m….. |
Thread: A bit of bother drilling |
15/07/2022 10:13:20 |
Hi, how do you adjust the tailstock to keep it from moving. chris m…. |
15/07/2022 10:05:51 |
Hi all, I seem to have a little problem drilling on the lathe. sometimes when I try to drill with the tailstock the drill doesn’t seem to go anywhere and the tailstock starts moving back slightly, even though it’s lock in place. I take it that you drill a pilot hole and then use smaller drill bits until you can use the drill bit for the job in hand. Am I right in thinking this. live got a couple of dormer centre drill bits for the pilot holes. just wondering what the technique is. thanks chris m…… |

Thread: Topslide question |
09/07/2022 16:22:06 |
if I was to buy a quick change toolpost that I’m interested in, would this bottom washer with the 3 screws have to be removed as well. I ask this because the screw nearest the camera will not budge, there is hardly any slot for a screwdriver, I’ve tried a few times. if it has to be removed, any ideas how I’d shift it. thanks |

Thread: Levelling an ml7 |
06/07/2022 17:33:57 |
Hi all, the thing I can’t understand about the levelling of the lathe is that in the manual it tells you to level the lathe with machinist levels, although I only have normal levels. this is what I did and the lathe on my stand was reading level on my levels. then in the manual it says to check for lathe body twist with a length of bar recessed in the middle and take light cuts on the two protruding bits. but it says that if these are out you have to adjust the jack screws again to get twist out of the bed. Once I did this, the lathe was not level again. I can’t understand this. can someone enlighten me. thanks chris m…. |
Thread: Tap and die trouble |
06/07/2022 17:26:31 |
Hi all, today I was trying to thread some thin bar about 10mm thick top and bottom about half inch deep and it was bloody hard work. I was using 3.8 die. no matter how tight I had the bar in my vice it kept moving round and made it a nightmare to do, only managed to do one end. Is it because I’m using a die too small for the bar. I haven’t done anything like this for many years. what am I doing wrong. thanks for your help. chris m…. |
Thread: Switch wire up |
05/07/2022 19:26:54 |
thanks for trying to help. im at a bit of a loss with electronics. I thought I’d try to use the switch as it would look nice connected to the stand, not too bothered about reversing. here are the pis of the motor plate and how it’s wired up, it a Compton Parkinson motor by the way. cheers |
