Just a thought on features and functions -

Creating a link to a specific post within a thread (rather than to the thread itself) might be a helpful feature.

Its utility would lie in the ability to compile a list of related items from across multiple threads.

As always others may disagree.

Thread: Conversion Calculator. Need to convert thous/inch into microns/metres
18/03/2023 08:57:18
Posted by Greensands on 17/03/2023 19:27:09:

Hi all - Can anyone provide a link to a suitable units conversion calculator., specifically, converting thous/inch to microns/metre. The sites I have discovered appear to be limited to straight forward unit to unit conversions as opposed to a unit/unit to unit/unit conversion.

If (and only if) you use an iPhone/iPad you might try PCalc, available at the App Store.

Technically orientated with many useful features and functions.

Your mileage may vary.

Thread: After a new dial indicator
14/03/2023 09:58:20

Came to this thread late.

Recently posted a (similar) query here about a Moore & Wright item I was thinking about purchasing.

DIAL INDICATOR 0 - 0.8mm - MW420-03

I did purchase.

All I can realistically report at this point is that I am satisfied with form and function.

Not yet used under battlefield conditions but seems fine in rehearsal.

I did a bit of a double take there - thought it was a more familiar (to me) King's Head!

... but then there are probably lots of them (pubs that is not heads)

100% with MichaelG.

But I would suggest - we really need is a dedicated Wilki.

This thread is Moore and wright tools.

Dial Indicators were not represented.

Now they are.

Also I'm rubbish at meaningful thread titles

I have a Moore and Wright question.

I did not want to start a new thread.

This one look like the closest fit .

So -

I'm purchasing one of the Moore & Wright Dial Indicator 0-0.8mm advertised by Myford.

link

Anyone willing to offer an opinion on the likely virtues or failings of said indicator.

It Is still probably better than the work it will be used with

Thanks in advance for any consideration given.

Rather than a DVD (which could still be an option) why not simply a download from the website (or a dedicated site) for a single (very cheeky !!!) small one-off fee? Maybe the same system for earlier versions of ME as well. The only major problem may be paying someone to sit there and scan all the magazines in. A small charge per volume would allow you to download the "words and music" for any series of articles that you required for your latest project. After all ME and MEW are a vast repository of information that is currently only available to those with collections of magazines going back several decades!

Edited By Bizibilder on 18/02/2023 10:05:08

Make that a "Me Too". I would be more than happy to pay for copy of specific articles of interest. Many articles get referenced that frustratingly I know I will never be able to read due to being in very early copies of magazines etc. Even happy to cover the actual service cost of digitising said 'specific article of interest' for posterity. Under this model, over time, articles would accumulate in some hypothetical system.

Sigh, one can only dream.

Thread: ML7 tailstock barrel thread and so on....
15/02/2023 08:39:33

Hopper

Unbelievably helpful. That pretty much answers everything I could have thought of asking and probably changes the direction of what I was attempting.

I was not originally thinking of a lever arm, more of an extension cover as on the Super 7 thereby moving the hand wheel so that the threaded portion does not protrude through it. However your lever arm is a more desirable approach, I was hoping for a reasonably priced item to appear online but you know how that is.

Never having cut a thread (on the lathe) I'm .... uncertain .... but an opportunity to learn perhaps.

In any case that is a great build and lots of information to pour over.

Also can't believe I missed that build first time round (and the damned thread is left hand!!!!)

Thanks again.

I am contemplating a modification to the tailstock of my ML7. Having formed the opinion that the thread size on the tailstock barrel is - Acme, Right Hand, 1"-8. I am now on a hunt for a matching nut.

I have located nuts on McMaster-Carr website with the above attributes (but it is far away and expensive to get it here - for one nut.)

My questions.

1. Have I got the thread characteristics correct? (a.k.a have I missed something)

2. Can anyone advise of a supplier on this side of the planet.

From my limited probing eBay is out and China does not seem to have them either.

Thanks in advance for whatever consideration you can give my request.

I took screen shots of some of the graphs but this infernal apple device saves them as PNG so they can’t be uploaded to this thread!

This may be of use. In terminal type:-

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type pdf (or gif, tiff, jpeg or whatever)

This will change default file type etc.

Thread: Hemingway Power Hacksaw
23/01/2023 10:08:11

I have noted a number of threads here regarding the subject line. Could someone in the know estimate the length of time this project might take to complete.

I understand that this a variable but I just need to estimate if, given a well equipped shop and reasonable level of competence, it is going to take a weekend or a year of weekends - or more!.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thread: Largest Engine Made By a Model Engineer?
15/12/2022 11:04:02

Naive question.

If building a "x-inch" model that means the scale of the model is x inch = 1 foot. Is that correct?
Whereas a x inch gauge refers to the spacing between rails. Is that correct?

Is there a (simple) relationship between these two selectors or are they incompatible.

I have (briefly) poked around on the web - 'nuff said.
Could someone here could point me towards a decent reference (preferably the old fashioned kind - a book)

When deciding which scale to use what factors might go into that decision. It looks to me that the gauge scale will mandate the (finished) size of any rail based model whereas the x inch per foot allows more leeway with non rail related models.

There is a table in Tubal Cains Model Engineers Handbook concerning track and wheel standards but not enough.

Thanks in advance.

Thread: Phosphoric Acid experiment
17/04/2022 12:36:34

Ok this is probably of little interest to anyone but nonetheless

Have this old fragment of (what now appears to be) wrought iron. Been using it for years to open paint tins, lever out nails etc. You know the sort of thing.

a.jpg

Recently decided to try clearing rust off a section using Phos. Acid. (light grey area in above photo)

24hour immersed in acid reveals interesting striations in the structure of the metal - once the rust is 'dissolved'.

3.jpgb.jpg

(I believe this is consistent with old wrought iron)

Will probably do some follow up exploration on this. Should it be of interest I may post more photos.

The picture is a clip from a background of another picture. It's all I have.

Michael - made me contemplate rewiring then entire shop in the manner of a stage set - which might actually have merit.

DC31k - I know.....sigh!

Why is it that all (aka - the overwhelming majority) of extension sockets have the cable exit on the right. Sometimes you just need it on the left. Or is that just me?

Regarding the item picture below:

4_way_outlet.jpg

What is its correct name / description? (google return no match for either image search or misc. word combinations)

Are they 'retired' or readily available?

I have been searching for such for some time.
