Don't think it's a problem doing that but a bit heavy to be lifting onto a machine table. My back has just gone thinking about it. |

Welcome, I am new on here myself. If your like me you'll be asking lots of questions that most on here know as second nature. |

Most car engine refurb places have them. Lockside engineering in Castleford do head skimming so guess they have one. |

Yes absolutely tragic for the people & animals of Australia. The worst we seem to get is a moorland fire like the one last year. The size of the fires in Australia would consume the whole of the UK & some. Terrible. |

I'm sure there must be a few. I am from Leeds & know a few guys that make Traction/Steam engines. Sure they have them. Would not have the cheek to ask them though. Hope someone answers your call. + Hi from Leeds. |

Your attention to detail is great. Looks good so far. Something about detail & good engineering I have always appreciated. |
Thread: Myford Super 7 screw cutting gears (metric) |

Thanks for that. I have copied the charts which were put on here some time ago showing which setting of the quick change for each pitch of metric thread. Not heard that I need a gear adaptor. What is that for. |

Steviegtr, I used a lot of tallow and trefolex during my time as an electrican. I think also as a cutting aid for drilling with a holesaw but it smoked quite a bit and would probably be the same on a lathe and mill. There would also be some difficulty adding tallow to a rotating work-piece. Tallow was always hard going when threading by hand until the workpiece got warm. Ed. Yes totally agree with you. My main point was on the occasions when we had no cutting aid, we would use oil. When we did that it was hard going especially on large conduit. 1 1/2" was a cow to screw. All the shopfitters on site used to have a lamson's tube shuttle filled with tallow for screwing large woodscrews into timber.

Thread: Myford Super 7 screw cutting gears (metric) |

Bump. I have ordered the 33 & 34 gears from Myford. I now think from reading posts that they fit on the shaft below the pair of tufnol gears. The shaft that holds 2 gears. So if correct do I turn that gear around for screwcutting so the 33 or 34 which I put on is to the inside, with larger gear to outside. Also anyone got an idea what year my QC gearbox is. No QC137956, my lathe is circa 1977. |

Castrol edge . If it's good enough for the Jaguar it's good enough for the lathe. Had a bottle so why buy anything else. Synthetic oils cling longer too. |

Can anyone verify my theory about the cutting medium melting into the work, where oil does not. |

I have one of these for my S7 from Pressparts **LINK** works very well and better than the genuine Myford one I have ! I also use a standard oil can, as it happens a Reilag but any will do for general lubrication of oil cups, bed etc. John Great I have ordered that item. Looks ok. Shame I had not known about the tight area of the belt pulley nipple as I have just refitted the shaft after new belt fit. Could have relieved the area to make it more accessible.

I know it is not the same, but I spent a lot of my career threading electrical conduit for installations. We used all sorts of cutting aids. Tallow from the butcher. Plain oil. Trefolex cutting paste. & a few other means. Just to say when we used oil it was hard going with the dies. As if the oil was not melting into the work like the proper cutting mediums. Would this transpose over to cutting tools on a lathe. |
Thread: Case Hardening |

Used to harden my screwdriver tips after sharpening. It was a black dry powder from memory you heated the steel & rolled the part in it. Not sure whether we chilled it after or not. I did a large screwdriver 3 times thinking I was good. On the job I was putting a No 12 woodscrew in & the end snapped off like a carrot. |

what if the cone fitting was made of acetal would that seal better. would be simple to adapt to an oil can end. |
04/01/2020 19:19:28 |
Ah I see how you have done it. I was thinking of the reverse with a inward cone to fit over the nipple . Vision of oil squirting everywhere but where it's wanted. Thanks. |

Looking at the lubrication points on the super 7. There are some with oil cups. There are 2 on the quick change gearbox that are grease nipples. The rest are all small 2ba fitting thingy's never seen anything like them. So on the myford site , they have the (special oil can) £66 surely there must be another oiler that will do. Or do I wait until I get the machine up & running & make an end for a standard oil can. |
