Thread: First print with new resin printer
03/08/2022 19:05:33

I had an idea my first print wouldn't go well, I expected total failure. The FEP film at the bottom of the resin vat had small ripples in it, I don't know how or when they got there, but the film is supposed to be flat and under tension. An hour after pressing start I could see the build plate emerging from the resin vat, I had put too much resin in so I couldn't see what was going on before. I saw that there was some sort of failure, so I stopped the print to have a look. I had 5 items on the build plate, 3 had printed OK, 1 had failed and the 5th hadn't had time to get going. IMG-2061 shows a small name plate, the green one is from the resin printer, the blue one from my Ender3. IMG-2064 is the closest my old camera could get. The fillet is half a mm. IMG-2065 is 55mm across and shows how flat the surface is, it's glass smooth. I am now wondering if I should try another print with the existing FEP, I think some of the ripples have lessened.

Thread: Electroforming a dome
02/08/2022 18:39:47

John,

Some of the domes I have seen formed were over a foot wide, in steel. They weren't a half round though, it was the making of a musical instrument called a hand pan. Nice sound.

John, I have watched several youtube videos where a dome is formed in metal using hydraulic pressure. Two thick steel plates with the copper sheet sandwiched between. The top plate has a hole the diameter of the dome, the bottom plate has a hole for a grease nipple. When the whole lot is bolted together and a grease gun is used to pump grease into the former, the copper, properly annealed, should start forming a dome. I have seen a video where a headlight for a motorbike was formed this way.

I remember the '66 world cup win. I didn't think it would take this long to do it again! Well done to all involved.

Hi Graham,

I wonder if you could fit a dro to your lathe? They seem to have a large read out.

Some years ago a friend had electric power steering fitted to his Mk2 Jaguar. Perhaps something similar is available for power assistance to brake and clutch pedals?

It must be a "Webster" thing Duncan. I have a mild case of prosopagnosia. Yes, it is a real word. It is also known as "face blindness". I sometimes can't recognise people who I have met previously. I was at a friends birthday party once and this couple came up and started talking to me as if they knew me. After several minutes of a blank baffled stare from me they reminded me that my friend and I went to their house for dinner the previous week, just the four of us. Brad Pitt is also a sufferer. It affects as many as 1 in 50 Britons.

I have no evidence of this, but wouldn't cheap-ish pottery items of the 1700s have been mass produced? Make a mould and get thousands of cups and saucers etc.

I was going to suggest "Padmes". I looked in on their website three years ago but it now seems to have gone. They had a private track not open to the public. I am not sure what the "P" stands for, but the rest of the word could be "and disrtict model engine (eering?) society". Don't hold me to that though. I have found an old email I sent them back then about meeting up with them at Callestick to see if I was interested in joining. If you send me a PM I will forward the contact email address. I live in Illogan near Redruth. I never did go because of the covid restrictions.

Thread: British Homes Have Air Conditioning ?

I know very little about global warming. And because the experts from each side seem to disagree about the facts, made up or real, I suspect that they know very little too. What is a well know fact is that victorian Britain was a lot colder than modern Britain. Ice fairs on the river Thames come to mind. Perhaps then, the world has been warming as part of a natural cycle for a long time and man has just sped it up a bit. If we have, then we should be able to slow it down again.

PatJ, NOT picking holes in your spelling (autocorrect?) but I think you meant to type GB pub, not hub. If you did mean to type hub, I can assure you as someone who lives in quaint Cornish village, we aint got no hubs here mister, and no compooters to plug 'em into. Set 'em up landlord.

When I became a vegi 30 odd years ago I had to decide what constituted meat. Some said that an egg isn't meat, I disagree. I fell back on an old game from radio, I think, "animal, mineral or vegetable". I won't eat anything from the first catagory, but I will drink milk. I don't think I can eat anything from the second catagory, so that leaves vegetable (and fruit). I also gave up looking for meat alternatives. You'll never find one, enjoy the veg for what it is.

Today, 20th July, started cold with a little mizzle in the air. My sister and her husband came to stay for a few days and we were talking about aircon. It turns out that two of my nephews are both aircon enginners, and both have aircon in their homes. Another sister phoned to wish me happy birthday, she was out with a third sister enjoying (?) 40 heat in or around Hemel Hempstead. I don't know what the temp was here in Cornwall, but it was nearly cool enough to put a cardie on. (I didn't). A small silent chep to run aircon does sound nice.

I would ban music in shops. Unless it's the Sally Ann playing carols at Christmas.

I would ban smoking in a public place, anywhere public. If you want to smoke do it in a cupboard at home.

I would ban highly paid executives. There should be a pay cap on these people. If you own a company you have created, then you deserve good pay, but the others in the company don't.

I would ban people who moan.

I don't recall ever being in a house here in the UK that had aircon. I can see it being like most other "luxuries" us Brits turn our noses up at. 100% unnecessary until we have it, then we wonder how on Earth we lived without it. I remember about 50 years ago we used to rent our television from a shop. When we had a new tele delivered the shop rep started to show us how to use the remote (connected by a cable) control. My mother stopped him saying we can get up press a button on the television if we want to change channels. She made him take the remote back! A week or so later she allowed the remote into the house. You've made me wonder how much an aircon would cost to run at least at night to make sleeping more comfortable. Hmmm.......

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday steaming, today 8am-ish, thunder and a few drops of rain. I think I will go outside for a while.

I have kept out of the sun all my life. Sunstroke is something really nasty. But now I am getting older, and I hope fitter, I can work in the garden in this heat for hours at a time wearing a large sunhat that also protects my neck. I now drink lots of water and stop for a hot drink often. I have only applied sun tan lotion twice so far.

Stay safe everyone!

I din't know that Heinz was American, still the best baked bean though.

I have owned two American cars, well probably Canadian I think because they were both right hand drive. A 1959 Chevrolet, and a 1968 Rambler. Two good cars, well built, and strongly built. Each came with a bumper jack. Hook the jack under special points in the front or rear bumper and lift the car.

When I was very young, Japanese made goods were frowned on as being poorly made. Now look at them. I wonder if the Chinese will get to the same point one day?

Thread: What Did you do Today 2022

After a lot of searching on the net for a small solar panel to power a very small floating leaf shape pond fountain, with various amounts of "no luck", I bit the bullet and drove to a garden centre to buy a water feature of a green frog dribbling water into a green bowl. The unit had a solar panel, so I bought it. £79.00. My floating leaf fountain cost £15.00 new and can be bought for £25-ish now. But this one belonged to a dear friend. I had to use the small pump that came with the frog, but I will fit the original pump as soon as I can. The floating leaf is now doing its job, floating in my pond and spraying water. Hardly any of the spray is missing the pond, so the water level shouldn't drop much. £79.00 to get a £15.00 fountain working? Worth every penny.

In memory of Sadie.
