Thread: Slitting Saw Arbor
18/07/2020 13:18:01

I have been given some slitting saws of different bores.

I would rather NOT have to buy an arbor for each size

Can anybody kindly direct me to a supplier that offers Arbors that could be used with different size bore saws, please?

Thread: cateracts.
15/07/2020 23:23:56

When my late Mother had her first cateract surgery, she told me that they used a large needle into the eyeball. But for the second procedure they did something else.

She was awake and could hear the medics talking. She was worried because a young female voice repeatedly asked an older male voice if she was doing something correctly or what to do next. Mother found this VERY worrying!

Clearly they should have removed her hearing aids before starting on her eye!

I am VERY sorry to read about your vision problems. I really don't know what to write.

I suggest that perhaps you should speak to a different Ophthalmic surgeon or your Solicitor about negligence claim.

Medical Negligence is big business for solicitors!

With best wishes and sympathy

Thread: Cigarette Papers
13/07/2020 19:19:24
Posted by SillyOldDuffer on 13/07/2020 17:38:42:

Nice challenge for all those blokes with micron and tenths micrometers. It's a good test of instrument and technique, because no-one knows the right answer, if there is one. (I doubt fag paper is made as accurately as a slip gauge.)

I have written to RIZLA+ but NOT had any response

I presume that their boffins will know.

Incidentally RIZLA+ = Rice paper and La Croix (the firm that made them originally)

Very many thanks for your continuing interest

Very many thanks to everybody who has replied.

Stan Bray wrote to cut off the gummed area!

Green seems to be favourite with more members responding in favour than the other colours put together.

I confess that I was NOT aware that other companies manufactured Cigarette Papers other than Rizla+

I am self-isolating at present so will ask my neighbour, who is doing my grocery shopping at present, to buy me a couple of packets of Green (otherwise Blue).

I don't have a toilet near my shed - so cigarette papers will have to do.

Very many thanks again to you all.

Very many thanks to you all for replying

Has anybody actually measured the thickness of the different colours?

If so, what are the thicknesses, please?

With best wishes and thanks again.

In Stan Bray's book "Milling for the Model Engineer", he recommends using cigarette paper to gauge thickness (a sort of disposable feeler gauge).

I've researched Cigarette Papers and discovered that they are available in different colour boxes with different thicknesses (and flavours).

I've written to Rizla+ and NOT had the courtesy of a response

Does anybody use cigarette papers in this way? If so, what colour box, please?

How thick (in either thou or microns) are they, please?

Very many thanks for taking the time to read this and, if you can, for helping.

I hope that you and your families are - and will remain - well.

Thread: cateracts.
13/07/2020 09:21:31

My late Mother had cateracts removed in both eyes but about five years apart. She was delighted with the improvement.

She had a 25 dioptre insert in the second eye - I don't recall (or was never told) about the strength of the first.

She needed spectacles for reading but distance vision was good.

It didn't help her memory though and dementia developed.

Thread: Printing from Digital Archive
27/06/2020 19:02:02

I concur

In my experience the FAQs never include what I want to know!

It might be better to fix it in some way to the top of the list of topics

I'm currently a Print Subscriber

I would like to be able to access the Digital Archive and am prepared to change to the "Print + Digital Bundle"

My medical advisors have told me that I should minimise computer use so sitting in front of a screen would cause health problems

If I pay for access to the Digital Archive, will I be able to print articles and drawings so I can read the paper version and take the printed sheet into my workshop to follow the guidance and make the things described?

Perhaps one of the computer wizards reading this can tell me what software I would need on my Mac (which runs OS 10.6.8) to view and print bits of digital copies

Very many thanks

Thread: Advice on Choosing A Mini Lathe
27/06/2020 00:48:15
Posted by Roderick Jenkins on 30/03/2019 22:43:38:

Perhaps we need to define our terms. Suppliers in both the UK and USA describe 7x12 and 7x14 lathes as mini lathes. I suggest that Sherline and Taig lathes (and Pultra, Flexispeed and Adept) could be referred to as micro lathes.

Cheers,

Rod

I have a Taig/Peatol lathe (I was told that the Taig lathe is called Peatol in United Kingdom because Taig is rude in Irish)

I would be delighted to talk about it to anybody who sends me a message OFF LIST with his/her telephone number. (Offer applied only in mainland UK)

I have been given the Hermes customer service number by a supplier, I haven't tried it myself.

0330 08 08 5456

When I tried to ring this (our of interest) the telephone told me: "You have dialled an incorrect number...."

Having a telephone number doesn't imply that it will be answered by a human being who is able to actually do something to resolve problems!

It would be interesting to see the results of a trawl through this thread tabulating the number of good and bad comments about each brand of Courier.

I'm in the middle of a project in the shed-workshop so can't offer Treasurer do it myself

I have a large notice on my front door asking callers to RING the BELL (because I'm deaf and can't hear knocks). Also to leave packages with my specified next door neighbour if no answer.

A couple of weeks ago I ordered a large quantity (<£200) of Smoked Fish from a Smokery in Norfolk.

It was to be delivered by DPD.

I noticed something white showing through the glass panel in the front door and was amazed to find two boxes left in the Sunday on my front step in full view of the street. He had NOT followed the instructions and had simply left it.

I later found an email message and an SMS text message both saying that it had been left "safely" in my "porch".

I do NOT have a porch!

I am waiting to hear from the Smokery about DPD's response

25/06/2020 15:31:47

Actually, I don't know the names of any of the Postmen or women.

The next time I see one I'll ask if he or she is "Pat"

I have lived in my present home since 1987 and I have yet to experience a delivery by courier that has been 100% satisfactory.

When buying by Mail Order, I always ask for the goods to be sent by Royal Mail Letterpost - not Parcelfarce - even if it is more expensive.

In my view, all courier companies are a Wart on the Backside of Humanity.

In comparison, Royal Mail Letterpost provide a good-plated service.

At present, I’m not going out due to the COVID-19 lockdown and the postman and women have invariably agreed to take outgoing post back to the Sorting Office.

Thread: Bedford Files
23/06/2020 19:46:52

I found a tray with a number of file handles this afternoon.

All of them had round holes for the tang.

Most of my files have Python Handles but drilling a transverse hole so I can hand it on a hook is a challenge,

But the immediate problem of having to find a file handle for a flat tanged file is on the back burner.

I will look at the file again but despite the "3", it doesn't seem to be smoother than "smooth"

With best wishes and thanks again.

There you go, European maker and well priced with hanging hole!

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Those handles looked very good, until I saw that they charge 19 Euros for carriage!

Many different sizes on Ebay Plastic handles <<< UK supplier

I do find that wooden handles are much nicer to work with for long periods.

Edited By Oldiron on 23/06/2020 10:13:49

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I spent some time looking at Ebay yesterday but the specification didn't tell me the size of the hole and I've had problems in the past with plastic file handles splitting.

So I would want to have a sensible conversation with the seller about whether the handle will split when I fit my file (with tang of a stated size). Then if it does, it will not be fit for purpose and be returned.

So I need a supplier with good customer service rather than just a cheap price.

Some of my files came with plastic handles ready fitted and I don't find them uncomfortable.

Was the 3" a description of the radius / diameter of thereunder profile ?

Got a lathe? Turn up some wooden ones. Wood chips won't spoil your metal working lathe.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I don't know if I can find a Radius Gauge with a 3" leaf - but that's an interesting thought. I'll see if it matches the radius of an empty soup tin!

I have a Wood Lathe as well as a metal lathe but the difficulty is making a neat transverse hole in the handle to hang it up on a hook.
