Thread: Rubbish Milling Finish in Aluminium
28/03/2021 19:41:32

As already mentioned, that cutter looks blunt. New threaded shank cutters are easy to get hold of, but beware, metric sizes need metric collets and inch sizes need inch collets. Keep the new sharp ones exclusively for non ferrous metals.

Thread: Little nuts.......big fingers.
28/03/2021 19:34:43

I have big arthritic fingers, and when I modified the new 100mm four jaw chuck to fit my 7 X 12 lathe, I turned the first few threads off the mounting bolts to make life easier.

That is the best link so far, Michael. I notice they are hoping for an 18" increase in water level with the spring tide. Between now and Tuesday, the increase here will be 47", but I live next to the Bristol Channel. This spring high will be 12.7 metres, my house is at 6 metres.

Thread: Removing a J2 arbor from a drill chuck
27/03/2021 19:54:35

If you end up deciding to leave the chuck and arbor together, there are R8 adaptors for tanged MT2 chucks. We have one chuck still with its MT2 taper which can be used in the lathe tailstock as well as the mills.

It's unfortunate that (unless anyone knows better) that they don't seem to supply outside jaws with the 6 jaw chucks.
They seem to be listed in the catalogue(s) but I've still to find a stockist with them.

Bill

That is what tends to put me off buying one as well. In the USA, you can get the model with the two piece reversable jaws, I was shown a picture on the Home Shop Machinist forum.

Soft jaws are the best way to hold work perfectly and without risking marking the work.

Some of the reports on the web were incorrect as to the location, it is a shame that the southern bit has not yet been dualled, this will certainly get another new section cut very soon.

The ship is only a few miles north of the entrance from the Red Sea.

Thread: Milling Aluminium
27/03/2021 16:01:24

You would get the best use by keeping the really sharp cutters exclusively for aluminium and never using them on steel. A lubricant used sparingly is essential to keep the aluminium from sticking to the edges. Always put something soft under the tool when changing cutters as a drop onto the bed, or floor can chip the ends. Chipped carbide cutters will still cut quite well and can be used for roughing.

Thread: New mill vice which one

That 100mm vise is about as big as you would want on the TS bed. Having an infinitely adjustable position for clamping means there is no loss of Y axis movement, and the double clamping is a bonus. The flat column on the TS makes it easy to use a mag base with an indicator to get the vise aligned. I would rough align it first with a tri square before fitting the clamps on one side.

Thread: Excellent Chinese Chuck

One of the chucks at the museum is a Huhhot Chinese 125mm which is very good indeed, it dates from 2003, I still have the test certificate. The Chinese four jaw independent 160mm which I bought for the museum was only £50 and it works, but the jaw fits are rather loose. I bought a couple of the Sanou chucks for my 7 X 12 Warco mini lathe, an 80mm three jaw scroll, and a 100mm four jaw independent. The 100mm had to be modified to fit the spindle. They are both superior to the original chucks for the lathe.

Thread: Griptru chucks
26/03/2021 21:44:46

Griptru chucks are intended for use in a production enviroment. If there are large quantities of identical workpieces, a three jaw scroll saves time and the fine adjustability at the start of the run is a great advantage. Each batch may be a different size, but can be zeroed in perfectly. A four jaw independent can be dialed in just as accurately, but even if two adjacent jaws are loosened each time, the repeatability is not guaranteed unless it is checked. The cost of this type is double that of their standard chucks. PB is the only type using three adjustment screws, the other makes use four, and there have been comments made on other forums that trimming four is much easier.

Thread: Steel Rule Graduations Re-Blacking
26/03/2021 19:06:20

If they were originally engraved, they would have been chemically blacked all over and then rubbed down leaving the black in the numbers and scales. There may not be enough depth to repeat the process.

Thread: Low head Cap Screws
26/03/2021 15:03:21

I believe that the socket size is still related to the thread diameter, for hexagon or torx, of a reduced size like when a countersunk end is used. The depth of the socket is less than a normal screw, which calls for added care when tightening.

I was right all the time, and confused by the reports of the second channel being used. It wasn't, that channel is much further north. No wonder I thought that Google earth was out of date, it isn't, the ship is stuck near Suez.

25/03/2021 20:20:41

Winds on the side of one of those ships could give very little time for anyone to keep the vessel lined up with the canal, even if the bowthrusters were used. It was a sandstorm that caused the grounding. I am surprised that incidents of this nature are not more common.

Looking again at the map shown in the early posts, the ship seems to be located at the southern end of the canal. That is what fooled me, the doubled section is much further north.

You would think that GE imagery marked copyright 2021 would be up to date.

25/03/2021 17:12:06

I have just been looking at the Google earth images of the southern part of the canal, they seem to be up to date. There is no sign of a alternate route. The sweetwater canal is 1/10 of the width with lots of low bridges, so that can't be the answer.

Blow me, there is a new bit, the GE is out of date.
