Thread: Can't disassemble drill chuck
26/01/2022 20:34:16

As soon as I saw the picture, I had the same thought as Nigel Bennett, it might be swaged. I have a piece of tube, bored to press exactly where that rounded edge is at the rear on chucks. The one I made works for 1/2" Jacobs and 1/2" Eliot. The rear swaging was common on electric drill chucks, but I have not seen it on industrial chucks.

They were production machines, now rather superceded by CNC.

Thread: Steel tyres on alloy rims

I wouldn't expect a precision model to be kept outdoors or in damp conditions, but it is easy to seal the joints when assembling and removes a littly worry.

I'm very pleased to know the answer.

Wet primer was just one of the specifications, we also used JC5A, Mastinox and certain PRC products which would be difficult and expensive to get hold of.

Google Loctite thread sealants to get the exact specifications.                   https://www.turtle.com/ASSETS/DOCUMENTS/ITEMS/EN/Loctite_21472_Catalog.pdf

Thread: Milling machine, but which brand ?

An excellent choice for a benchtop, with a higher than average spec.

DVD players are cheap now, so getting one which already has HDMI would be safer than possibly wasting money on a Scart adaptor.

When assembling aircraft parts, a compound was always used to seal the joints between housings and bushes, for instance. You could assemble your wheels using a coating of wet primer paint which will stop the ingress of water and damp. After assembly, just wipe off the excess with a solvent damped rag.

Thread: Clarke cl500m mill head bearings

I can see the oiling of the quill lever spindle, that is all there is on the mill .

Strange, I downloaded the CL500M manual from the Clarke website, and the routine lubrication on page 23 does not show any lubrication of the milling spindle.

Thread: CHATTER
24/01/2022 21:19:42

The inserts intended for aluminium and commonly labeled HO1 may beavailable for your holder. They will cut well with tiny cutting depths and therefore reduce the tendency for chatter. You should try different spindle speeds, sometimes there is a resonance at a particular speed.

On Saturday, I turned a bit of unknown steel and the chatter was so intense that it was almost too pretty to continue machining, but it was the only piece I had. The answer was tailstock support.

I agree with SOD here, they are probably not intended to be lubricated during their lifespan. The manual should show lubrication points and there may not be any mentioned for the lathe spindle either.

Thread: Cast Iron C section

It looks like part of a machine, so it might have been cast especially and never been C section.

Thats exactly what I would do with it. But I do hate an unsolved mystery.

I found the parts list, they are very likely taper roller, but that grease would work with any ball or roller bearings. Why do you want to replace them?

Thread: Can you identify this?

I did find out what the taper was, but have forgotten and checking through googled machine tapers has not had any luck for me.

If I can find the one at the museum, I will post a picture.

If the bearings are taper roller, I would recommend a high melting point lithium grease, as used for older car wheel bearings. Be sure to leave at least 50% air space when packing them.

Thread: DIY tool holder for inserts
23/01/2022 21:22:36

When I make holders for carbide inserts, I get the hole position centered and then displace about 0.002" to 0.006" depending how big the screw is. Displacing the screw hole slightly towards the seat sides holds the insert tighter. The smallest screws I use are 1.8mm and the largest 6mm.

There is one of those tapers kicking around the workshop at the museum, I believe it is for a quick release milling or maybe drilling spindle. It is probably one of the short lived fittings that were killed off by BT 30 AND 40. The DTI holder would work well on any mill spindle or lathe tailstock. I would get a blank end arbor to fit it on as the blank ends are made soft to be machined.
