Which spindle fitting does your L5 have? If you are producing a taper, it would mean that the headstock is not in line with the bed. Edited By old mart on 27/12/2020 20:08:19 |

I can't quite get my head around the smallest ammount of adjustment achievable, could it be 0.947 of a degree? I have just read Howards post, he had already answered my question. Edited By old mart on 27/12/2020 19:52:00 |

From the picture by S O D, the coupling would be easy to make with a rotary table and a suitable diameter ball end mill, and a rounding off cutter. Edited By old mart on 27/12/2020 18:49:07 |
Thread: Vintage lathe cross slide adjustment |
27/12/2020 17:59:57 |
Remove the two screws in your second picture and you can unscrew the leadscrew. The cross slide will probably slide off. If it stops, then you will have to remove the compound with the toolpost and look for screws holding the cross slide nut and remove them. |

The only way I could lift that would be with a long bar through the chuck, and a sling at each end, I can't see any threads for a lifting eye. |

https://www.iscar.com/eCatalog/Item.aspx?cat=5504887&fnum=530&mapp=IS&GFSTYP=M&srch=1My inscribed circle in the third post was wrong, yours should be about 1/4" (6.35mm) diameter. The sides should measure just over 11mm. These TCMT 110204 are common. Edited By old mart on 27/12/2020 15:09:51 |

You need to use a penknife blade to ease them out. If that fails, run a blade round the hole until it gets big enough for the ball to pop out and then I have used a tap screwed in a couple of turns to pull the remains out. These button oilers come in metric and inch sizes, you have to measure the hole. The Tom Senior mill had three sizes on it. Steve's self tapper is a good method. If you have a mill, you could easily make a second set of fingers with little ball races at the ends, then your steady will be complete. When usung a steady, cut a disc of card to fit on the work to stop swarf getting caught in the fingers. |

Loctite make an excellent pipe joint product, 577, where PTFE tape is difficult to apply. |

Dead right, Dave, Steve's Z drive would go down, but there could be smoke going up. I would estimate that the HV6 type are 1/3 of the weight of the big one. Selling it on ebay should recoupe most of the cost of a 6" one. |

TCMT 110204 is the size, you can check the diameter of yours. Just imagine a circle fitting within the triangle, if it is 11mm then the size is right. The thickness is 2.38mm. TCMT 110304 is 3.18mm thick. Lots on ebay. P25 is a common grade for steel. Edited By old mart on 26/12/2020 18:03:22 Edited By old mart on 26/12/2020 18:06:59 |
Thread: Rotary table |

The Tom Senior light vertical table is quite small, which is the main reason why we did not get rid of the drill mill at the museum and now have two. That picture shows the Soba 6" taking up the full width of the bed. Steve, if you want to splash out for the whole lot, then Chronos has the HV6 for about £262. The Soba one that I bought privately some time ago will fit the TS very well, as the tee slot pitch matches. I bought the plates later and made a tailstock myself. The resolution is 1 minute of angle at a ratio of 90:1 using the vernier scale. That was the RT that had radial play in the table needle roller bearing. The bearing was binned and an aluminium bush made which solved the problem. It is 4 slot which makes it easy to hold a front mount 4 jaw chuck. It is higher than the RDG one, but everything depends on the available budget allocation.

I will visit the RDG site for a look. I have looked at the three slot one which is painted green, it cannot be used with plates, but that is no great loss for most of us. The scale divisions are 12 minutes of angle, but I recon you could read it to 2 minutes, which is plenty for most work. The three slots mean that a three jaw chuck with front mounting could use the tee slots without any adaptor plate. Edited By old mart on 26/12/2020 14:52:59 |

Ady1, you should try the packs of 5 off 6mm solid carbide two flute endmills from the auction site at less than £3 a cutter. They are very good and will last longer than your ones. Just remember that they are brittle and should not be touched down on the workpiece unless they are running. At their price, you will not cry so long if you break one. Your first post mentions 2" and also 0.02mm in 15", you may be bilingual without knowing it. Using machinery which has metric or imperial depending on which machine it is we have to get on with both. Edited By old mart on 24/12/2020 16:41:15 |
