Thread: Bronze balls in place of steel balls in a Land Rover
31/01/2021 17:36:43

It would be a difficult modification to fit a modern steering rack to a Land Rover, and a Prius one would not be strong enough. A rack from a larger 4 x 4 would be the minimum spec.

Thread: Mounting a Mitutoyo dial gauge
31/01/2021 17:30:06

Take the lugged back off before buying a plain one and have a look. You might be lucky.

Thread: Back once again with the idiot questions...
31/01/2021 17:27:29

I can't remember why I decided to go for front mount through bolts, tapped holes on the same pcd at the rear with studs would have worked just as well.

Thread: A recent thread has vanished - NOT
31/01/2021 17:24:23

Good result thanks everyone.

Thats the one, Michael, I hope one of the moderators can reinstate it, the op must be very confused, I certainly was. sad

31/01/2021 15:02:36

A new member posted a querie about the 100mm four jaw chuck he had bought not fitting the spindle of his lathe. There were several replies including a couple from me including some pictures from my album of a similar chuck which I had modified to fit my 7 X 12 Warco lathe.

The complete thread has dissapeared, can it be resurrected?

Thread: Bronze balls in place of steel balls in a Land Rover
30/01/2021 21:50:08

Iwould worry about the shear strength of bronze in that application, also because bronze is much softer, would they tend to dent. There must be superior extreme pressure lubricants available now compared to those available in the 1950's.

Thread: M2 x 2mm brass grub screws - do they exist?
30/01/2021 21:11:19

Why not cut them down from the 6mm ones?

Thread: 8 inch 4 jaw Chuck on WM290 lathe?
30/01/2021 21:09:35

As there are times when the jaws will overhang the od of the chuck, I should make sure the radius can be 5" without contacting the bed. If the chuck body only just clears the bed, then its holding capacity will only be very slightly better than a 160mm one.

Thread: Collet runout. Is this normal
30/01/2021 21:04:01

You could try chucking up a steel bar in the lathe and skim it to a size to match one of your collets. Then fit the collet chuck backwards and check its runout in every measurable aspect (concentricity of OD and register, also flatness).

Thread: Back once again with the idiot questions...

_igp2582.jpg_igp2581.jpgI have one of the 7 X 12 Warco lathes at home and treated it to a new 80mm three jaw and a 100mm independent. The 80 just fitted on and is much better than the original one. The four jaw had rear mounting holes and was easily modified by boring the register and adding front mounting holes at the same pcd as the original. I had the advantage of a bigger lathe for the boring, but it could be done well enough just using the three jaw chuck with a piece of 30mm bar, skimmed true and then mounting the four jaw on the bar and doing the boring. The holes are reasonably easy. This would not work with a four jaw scroll chuck.

Thread: Metric thread sizes
30/01/2021 18:52:46

I wouldn't be surprised if the saw had that thread from new. I had an Italian made Aspera motor in a mower that had Unified threads throughout. It was made under licence from Tecumseh motors, from the USA.

You could bore out the rear of the new chuck, but you might find the mounting holes are in different positions.

Thread: Machine corrosion protection
30/01/2021 15:06:10

The machines at the museum are in an unheated area and are unused during the lockdown periods. They have nothing more than a wipedown with an oily rag with motor oil on it and there is no trace of rust. Fortunately, the walls of the industrial type building are double skinned and insulated, so the temperature changes are slowed down, which reduces the danger of condensation. If you can insulate well, it will help, even if you cannot heat the workshop.

Thread: Knees
30/01/2021 14:53:43

I have both knee joints replaced by cobalt chrome and it has been a great success. The left knee was first to be replaced with a full joint and the patella was lined as well, 2 1/2 years ago. The right knee is a partial on the inside half, one year ago. The left knee can bend to 118 degrees and the right to 130 degrees. The lower legs from the knee to the ankle suffer from dermatitus from time to time which is a side affect which affects some people. It is a small price to pay for greatly increased mobility and being able to walk without constant pain. I was in hospital three nights for the first and two nights for the second. I had a small MRSA infection in the left knee at a stitch site which was closely monitored and thankfully cleared up without any intervention, and the right knee healed perfectly. I would not be able to walk by now if I hadn't had the operations. I was driving after 5 weeks and 3 weeks after each op.

Having my CO19 jab Wednesday, I'm very pleased to say.

Thread: Myford spindle rectification or replacement

A good result which saved you worry and possibly money. The runout you now have is well within expected norms.

Thread: Poor websites
27/01/2021 20:38:44

To have online ordering built in to a website, a sophisticated stock control system would have to be employed. Otherwise it would be very easy to run out of stock of a particular item.

Thread: Lathe Chuck backplate
27/01/2021 20:29:08

I made a set of screws for a Pratt 6" four jaw independent, and felt it would be easier to broach a hex in them rather than a square. The key was made from a piece of allen key pressed into a handle with a cross shaft through it.

not done it yet has already mentioned Allen keys.

Thread: Is this a worn thread or deliberate
27/01/2021 20:02:31

Tim and Roy both have the answer.

Thread: Squareness gauge
27/01/2021 16:21:42

At that rate, paying the duty and VAT from the USA for another indi-square would be a consideral saving.
