Thread: Heads-up for Clarkson screwed-shank users

What would you typically turn these in to? My imagination is stuck in neutral, I'm sure as soon as you give some examples it'll seem obvious but it isn't right now.

Thank you all, now I know it's an additional part I can keep my eye for either type if one becomes available.

Does anyone know if the different length spindles on Clarkson grinders is a complete different spindle or an add on piece?

I'm thinking of using the spindle head on my Union grinder as Clarksons are often sold as parts, but need to know which spindle type to look for if they're two different types.

Those bearings look absolutely fried, a good lesson to hammer swingers, it would be criminal to put those back in the machine.

After removing some electrical boxes from a small machine cabinet it left some cut outs in the sides, original thickness is 1/8", I had some 3mm plate so patched up one hole so far.

Renaissance Wax, it'll stop it rusting and prevent anything sticking to it.

Thread: Modular Mill Vice

Yes, the fixed jaw body is a bit wider, I'd imagine the vice gets cranked down extremely tight when used in CNC machines commercially so needs to be a bit more solid there.

It does give a bit more Z axis space, the Modular being 35mm high on the work surface face, the Versatile SG being 63mm high on the work surface face.

Just had to place an order on Zoro for work & had a look at this vice on the main site - this particular vice is currently £274.99 + Vat there. No special offer to account holders then !

Seems like a lot of overall length for it's capacity - 270mm overall length & 100 opening. What machine are you using it on ? It would have to go "long ways" on my FB2 clone table - "normal" orientation would interfere with the column on one side of the table & hang over the handwheel on the other.

Nigel B.

That's what I said in the original post, it is full price on their website and half price in their eBay shop, which is why I thought it might be a mistake being so cheap.

A few similar size vices for comparison

Modular 270mm length 100mm opening

Versatile 330mm length 120mm opening

Versatile SG 305mm length 120mm opening

So the Versatile is 60mm longer with 20mm extra opening, the Versatile SG 35mm longer with 20mm extra opening, I don't really see anything that out of the ordinary regarding total length to capacity?

In fact the total length is more similar to the 80mm jaw Versatile which is 252mm length with a jaw opening of 76mm.

Absolutely brilliant, very unique project, did you document the build process? I'd love to see how it came together.

Looks good, I would be very tempted if I hadn't recently bought an ARC Versatile. In my experience Zoro tend to be very expensive, I only buy things that are on sale when the prices come down to what you can buy the same things for elsewhere eg: Indexa PVM100 at ManoMano.

William.

As Jason says, the Mano listing is supplied by Zoro, generally I've not found Zoro to be that expensive, even at full price it was the cheapest available the next Modular vice up price wise was about £420 for the 100mm version, so still a good bit cheaper.

..tell us if it's good?

'Square' jaws and 'flat' base?

What're the other bits in the box?

First impressions are good, the fit and finish is excellent, I'll make my own measurements when I can, the leaflet that came with it shows it has been manually checked off, not printed check marks like someone on here had with a mill they bought.

The contents listed also, the work stop is bit mehh, but easy enough to make something better.

ZORO's eBay store has currently got these vices at half price, I've looked at them for a while but the price which fluctuates between £340 to £400 has put me off buying one, The price just dropped to £172 only on their eBay store, so I bought one half expecting to get a msg saying there had been a mistake and the order would be cancelled because it was so cheap, but no, it turned up today, eBay also had an 8x nectar points offer so got about 7 quid back making it £165 delivered, this offer is for the smallest 100mm size.

I'll buy some Genuine blades from a reputable source and make a side by side comparison at some point as I still have a couple of the ones that came with it, but they've been fine in use so far, it was about £7 including postage, can't remember if it came with 5 or 10 blades but well worth the price and I'm glad I didn't waste money on a 'genuine' handle, as it came out the same mold, you really would be paying extra just for the name.

This looks to be such an exact copy of the Noga, how do they get away with it?

Probably too much trouble to even try, but in my opinion the companies deserve it for moving manufacturing to certain places that are known for doing this yet they deem the risk worth it to increase profits.

The one in your picture looks different to the real ones.

I have one of these 'fake' Noga tools that's just a real one without the logo, they are produced in the same molds as the real thing, only without the logo on it, see pic below, does removing the logo reduce the quality? Not to me.

You should have on the front of the machine as mine, a symbol etched in to the information panel on the front of the headstock 'ISO METRIC'

football on main channels on evenings total disgrace

Absolutely, I hardly ever turn the TV on these days, but my god, the way certain people deem kicking a ball around a field to be worthy of interrupting other things is absurd, I genuinely would like to ban football from anything other than sport specific channels.

What is it about British people complaining about the weather?

12 months of the year complaining about the rain, then we get half an inch of snow and people behave like it's a 6 foot snow storm, then we get a couple of weeks of nice weather and......the complaining starts again, stick a couple of beers in the fridge and enjoy it.

As for the global warming, we were taught at school global warming would melt the ice, which would then cool the Gulf stream down making western Europe a bit cooler with other parts of the world getting warmer, has the theory changed since then?

No, ironically, the failure of the North atlantic conveyor and an ice zge remains a possibility.

That sounds familiar to what we were taught, global warming would for us here in western Europe mean the warm air blowing over from the gulf stream would cool down and while many parts of the world would notice higher temperatures, we'd gradually get a bit a cooler.

Sadly the environmental issue has been heavily politicised and information completely contradicting this is often presented as proof of global warming.

Regardless of anyone's opinion on global warming, industrial waste going into the ocean, thousands of coal powered power stations, and plastics entering the food source via sealife isn't a good thing.

Unfortunately the throw away society of short lifespan consumer goods only seems to be getting worse, how do you convince people to not buy cheap low life span goods and spend a few more quid on things that will last and have been produced in an environment that handles industrial waste responsibly? It's difficult people like cheap stuff.

Thanks for clarifying that John, that'll teach me to take random postings online at face value, I turned down a very cheap although a bit rusty G200 a while back because it wouldn't have been possible to put on a bench, I'm happy with the Union though it's a very nicely made little machine.

I'm quite lucky, I have a little pond in the back garden to keep cool in.
