Thanks for your comments on OSB vs ply, Clive. Surprises me, as I would have thought that ply would be less likely to move. Is OSB as good for holding screws under load though? Many shelves to go up! I don't think Bayzle's suggestion of roofing sheets would go down very well, as proposed workshop location is close to the back door and in full view of the kitchen window and the neighbours on either side - it will have to looks "nice". One advantage of timber , I suppose, I can let my wife choose the paint colour |

Thank you Michael , Noel, Duncan. I was looking to see how the price of a steel building compared with buying a heavyweight tanalised timber one and lining with 2" Celotex and 1/2 or 3/4 ply. (note to Duncan , Hanson's buildings come ready lined) Hanson have now given me a quote and they are about 50% dearer, so timber it will be |

Set screw? - Machine screw, surely. |

House move coming up soon, and may well require a workshop building. Anyone got any experience of/comments on the above company and its products? And, any idea as to pricing as their website isn't giving anything away. |

Initially my reaction. I couldn't reconise it as a 'proper' loco and after investigation , it appears it's a mock up and not powered by steam at all. Look at how the running boards are inclined upwards and meet the boiler cladding.

At least one of the old lime lathe books (possibly Mason, have checked the index of Sparey and it isn't listed) describes the making of 'running down cutters', which are very close to the woodworking plug cutters in the O.P. I made a few years ago to make some BA screws in brass, and they worked well enough. |
Thread: What features do you like to see in Youtube videos. |

No waffle, get through the material without hanging about, or irrelevant jokes/anecdotes/ references to previous videos I may not have seen. Clear speech. Adequate volume - far too many youtube videos are inaudible. Good view of the work in hand, not the presenter's face, or hands/arms blocking the way. |

Anyone done a build cost estimate on Ballaarat yet? |
Thread: Oily/greasy surface on a new V belt |
04/08/2021 14:20:10 |
Thanks, have just emailed them, but I can't see a multinational bothering to reply to a private individual who has bought a £5 item through a 3rd party. |

New V belt for milling machine has just arrived. For once, I treated myself to a genuine Fenner, rather than the usual cheapies. It has come with a very oily/greasy surface , which I haven't encountered before when buying a new belt, and it looks to me like it will slip like *******. Should I clean it off, and if so with what? Or rub it with emery cloth? Or will it be ok. |

What is the model - are the wheel castings still available?
|

Never mind the flange, which could be built up with weld and re-turned , the spokes at 1 and 2 o'clock look to be cracked at the root. |
Thread: re-magnetising magnetic base |
09/07/2021 17:40:03 |
Thanks everyone for your interesting contributions. So, no simple solution. I will buy a replacement and relegate the old one to holding a 12v light. Do secondhand Eclipse bases tend to retain holding power into old age? |
07/07/2021 14:44:06 |
My mag base is pathetic - my 5/8" Eclipse 'pots' grip better! Is there anything that can be done, eg dismantle and replace magnet, or is there someone offers a re-magnetising service? Or shall I just but another? |

Thread: "footprint" of Dore Westbury |
03/07/2021 12:40:32 |
Thanks for your contributions everyone. From the information provided, plus the drawing on Lathes.co.uk I have made a cardboard template which shows that a Dore won't fit into the space available. |

Kettrinboy, thank you very much. Dullard that I am, I hadn't thought of mounting it at an angle! Back out to workshop with tape measure right now! |
02/07/2021 12:13:53 |
Very many thanks John for a rapid and helpful reply . Dore looking a viable proposition Could I trouble you for one more measurement please - how far back beyond the rear edge of the baseplate does the motor project? (eg total requirement from back wall to front edge of bench) |
02/07/2021 10:08:24 |
I have searched and failed. What is the footprint (including reasonable working clearance around) of a Dore Westbury milling machine? Many thanks in anticipation, Rob |

Harking back to my previous post - In the youtube video of the steamboat association competition for steam outboards, the winning entry has a Stuart 5A mounted horizontally on an outboard leg, and it is successfully propelling a pretty hefty boat with substantial vertical boiler and four adults on board. |
