Am l the only dinosaur to have read the title of this thread and assumed it referred to aluminium?

I was just about to observe that the subject line looked clear enough to me … when I noticed the subtly different font in Alan’s post and yours !!

It was more a reflection that to those of us in our 60's and above, and who haven't had much involvement with I.T. artificial intelligence is a concept beyond our radar. To me "A.I." would mean artificial insemination.

Thread: I'm on Google Earth
17/07/2023 16:14:35

On one of the earliest versions l could be seen on my boat, having just dropped the mooring and travelled about 100 yards. Checking my logbook against the timestamp on the image confirmed the timing and what l got up to that day.

Fitted a t-slotted extruded aluminium table, intended for building CNC routers l believe, as sub table to cover up 80+ years worth of 'arc of shame' on my pillar drill. Makes positioning of the vice very easy, and have just ordered some Bristol levers which will make it even easier.

Thread: Ideas for rekindling the love

Do you have any grandchildren/friends children you could make simple Mamod style steam engines for? Making something to give to someone who will appreciate your work is always a good motivator.

Thread: Poor quality drill bits
29/04/2023 12:10:19

I am very surprised to see the negativity towards UK drills, l have always had good service from them and regard them as my "go to" supplier. The only 'dud' l have ever had was a carbide tipped dril which shed it's tip first use.

Thread: State Pensions - Notification thereof.
27/03/2023 21:27:52

Going slightly off topic - has anyone here on an NHS pension had a letter about this year's increase?

Thread: Coventry Die Head

"The Book of the Coventry Diehead" has all the info. There is a downloadable version online somewhere.

Thread: Constantly logging in

I get logged out (despite ticking the box to stay logged in

after a variable interval of anything between a couple of hours and 2-3 days, both on my phone and on the computer.

Thread: Printed gear tooth templates
08/03/2023 10:38:39

Thank you gentlemen, l will have a play and see how l get on.

07/03/2023 20:14:41

I was watching a YouTube video recently, where the contributor ground a gear cutting flycutter by cutting out a printed profile of the gear tooth and sticking it to the HSS blank. Anyone know where they got the printout from?

Thread: HAS THE BAY CRASHED ?

Have just tried putting a bid on something and all working for me.

Thread: Water power for your machines
11/01/2023 12:05:45

Back in the day, it was fairly common for church pipe organs to be be blown by mains water operated pumps. At the other end of the scale - does anyone remember the little water turbines that were sold to power Meccano models? Iirc the makers of those also sold a powered toothbrush driven by the same or similar turbine.

Thread: First New Years Mystery Item!

Could it be a special purpose compositors stick? To take three short lines of type for something like the message in a greetings card. The grooves being to take adjustable end stops to position the type relative to the dimensions of the card.

While I have no intention of ‘going into the red’, are there any building societies which allow over-drawn accounts?

Halifax do.

"Plain" (as distinct to Plane) sailing could possibly be correct if it is a reference to being under "all plain sail" , that is the full set of working sails but no extras such as studding sails (stuns'ls) water sails etc, or on modern yachting usage spinnakers or cruising chutes.

Thread: Modestly priced ER collets

They have clearly changed the wording of their listing since my purchase. I was expecting to receive one, and judging from their response, they only intended to supply one.
