Thread: Bench Grinder
17/06/2014 17:32:41

yes Thanks everyone. Was quite tempted by the ArcEuro models but was a bit put off by the "Wendeng" Chinese manufacture when doing a bit of research. However,.... we shall see, very near a decision, 6" or 8", does anyone have a preference? dont know

15/06/2014 13:22:03

Now then Peeps, my old bench grinder has given up the ghost after 32years. It was on old Warco 6" and has given sterling service over the years but now needs replacing.

So can anyone give a recommendation for a new one. The market seems to be flooded with cheap nasty ones with really flimsy tool rests and I'm looking for something just that little bit better, which will also take a tapered spindle for a polishing mop from time to time.

Needs to be from someone who does mail order to the far North of Scotland.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Peter.

Hi Alan, I can sympathise with your problems as I have experienced them living up near John O'Groats. Apart from having to pay exorbitant delivery charges for anything you get delivered you may also find problems obtaining stocks of steel, brass etc. B & M Steel in Inverness are very helpful but will only sell full 3 or 4 metre lengths, although they do provide a cutting service so that you can get some in the car if you're over that way. I always stock up from M-Machine in Darlington when I go down to visit my son in Tadcaster, they also do a great mail order service.

A few years ago when on holiday on the west coast, I came, quite by chance, on a model engineering exhibition in the village hall in Arisaig. It might be worth asking around if you get down there!

Good Luck and enjoy your life on the West Coast

I cover the lathe and miller with a couple of old towels (Bath sheets) and put a low wattage tubular heater under them. Its a very cold unheated and drafty garage in the far north of Scotland but have had no problems in the six years we have been here.

Hi Liam,

If you're thinking of building model boats or ships have a look at the Model Boats Magazine or

www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk forum on the web. Lots of good adviced there and a very friendly bunch too.

If you're thinking about Model Engineering and steam look at Elmers Engines ( Google it!)

Thread: 920 and its Drive belt
28/08/2012 09:26:32

Hi Andy,

Have you looked at the adjustments that can be made on the motor and "countershaft" pulleys.

They are both adjustable on my 920, but very awkward to get to. The motor will slide vertically on its mounting and the countershaft has a small radial slot which it can slide in. Its a bit of a juggle to get them both in a position that the belt will engage all the pulleys easily, but it can be done.

Hope that helps

Peter

Hi Andy,

I know the feeling!. I got a brand new 920 a few years ago and the first thing I did was to snap that little drive belt.

I bit the bullet and ordered two replacements from Warco, (they definately weren't cheap!) thinking that they were going to be an often replaced item, but even after 5 years use I have never broken another one. so still have a spare.

The code number on mine says 5M710 its from "Polymax", but all the other info is in Chinese, may help if you want to do another google search. dont know

Good Luck, Peter

Here's a couple of photos of a sash weight with a "problem"!!

I cut this in half hoping to get a couple of cylinder covers out of it but I'll have to get another one. The hole goes almost right down to the end!

Probably not completely ruined as I can still see a slide valve cylinder in there.

Regards to all

Thread: Subscripton Dept, A pat on the back!
22/05/2012 09:33:41

Lets give a big cheer for the subs dept for a change yes

smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley

I took out a subscription to MEW back at the end of February, but the free gift book failed to turn up.

I sent an e-mail to the subs dept. on the 17th May, received a reply on the 18th saying they would look into it, got another e-mail on the 19th telling me a replacement book was on its way, and received the book this morning.

Well done the subs dept and special congratulations to Marcus Hobling who dealt with my problem.

question

What's happening at Stuarts?

Just been on their web site and there is no longer any mention or price for the 10V, 10H or Double 10 castings, just the machined kits.

Surely they haven't discontinued them? sad

Thread: knurling an edge
10/04/2012 16:08:29

Thanks for the link Jason, that explains the size !!!

10/04/2012 15:58:34

Think I know what you want,,,, mount the wheel in a three jaw chuck, gripped in the outside jaws, if your chuck is big enough as the wheel seems to be about 5" diameter, and use a single straight knurling wheel mounted parrallel (spelling?) ie in line with the lathe bed and on centre height, slow speed and lock the saddle, feed in with the topslide.

Hope it helps!!!

Peter

Or even the inside jaws if you can grip the insde of the rim. You really need to give some support to the back of the wheel for the knurl to press against.  That seeems an awfully big wheel for a rifle sight.. 130 mm dia!

Thread: Which Loctite?
10/04/2012 14:12:20

Hi Folks,

As part of the horizontal mill engine I'm building, I've put together a built up crankshaft. Now, I've never used Loctite before so how do I degrease the parts and which number Loctite would you recommend. question

Thanks

Peter

PS the shafts are 5/16" Dia silver steel and the crank webs are 1/4" X 1/2" BDMS

Thread: Is it Just me?
08/04/2012 14:17:12

Not just you John.... happens to all of us I think.

I was in the workshop the other day trying to make the webs for a built up crankshaft, couldn't get the holes in the right place, couldn't drill square to the stock,,, just made swarf and scrap!! crying

Went out there this morning and just took that bit more care and thought through what I was doing, and hey presto just turned out quite a neat job. OK so the throw is short by 10 thou but I can live with that.

I think we get a bit complacent at times and think that just because the job is a "simple" one we don't need to put so much effort in to get it right. smile
