Thread: Warco VMC to CNC |

Good start. I wonder why you didn't receive any replies. Well you're in luck - there are no kits for these machines AFAICT. I have the Warco Super Major and I've been considering converting it for a while. The issue I have is; I'm sure the project will entail machining parts to make it work, but without a 2nd milling machine, this would entail continually disassembling it, taking some measurements and reassembling it again to make the part, which sounds like a faff. Maybe the process would be easier now that I have a 3D printer, as I can mock up all the required pieces while the mill is disassembled, and only assemble once to make the final parts.

Ah, so you have a bought holder. Maybe that'll work better than my janky Heath Robinson setup. Received mine today from 'you know who'. It's soooo tiny! |

Sorry, Daddy brain. Think about the cut pushing material outwards towards the fixed jaw.

That is a fair assumption. Using the power feed. |

Annoyingly I like the current surface finish, so I'm at pains to tram to 100%. The main issue for me is that it's trammed the wrong way. I'd like the best finish to be a result from pushing the cut into the fixed jaw really.

Yes, the trailing edge makes reversed arcs on the way through. And yes, it must mean the head is out of tram. Although when I checked it, it was about 0.02mm over 400mm, which I thought was reasonable. I've since ordered a new DTI holder to re-check it. |

Ha, that's cheating. Do you have a picture of your setup/shaft (no, I will not rephrase )? |

How does 0.1mm over 480mm sound? As nobody else has answered from last night I get about 1/10th of that in X&Y eg 0.003mm in 140mm on a Chinese machine. What do you measure with to gain that level of accuracy? I tried to use a 10ths/inch indicator which measures 6 10ths/inch over 480mm. Although it's hard with my setup as it's not 100% rigid. Might end up making something else. |

Hola. Back again. Sorry about the delay. Machining was deprioritised for a few months. So had a big play today and guess what? Well, a picture paints a thousand words: TL;DR; Bolted machine down (didn't change much), faster speeds (1000RPM), faster feeds (250mm/m). This is how I left it *after* changing to Arc's "known good" inserts - so much for high hopes: Thoughts: maybe the setup is janky - too much flex: Yuck. Change back to the vise, pronto: Ooooo, faster (and don't let the trailing edge catch it): Missing test, back edge was trashing the finish, so mill the other way: The money shot: Pretty: |
Thread: Scrappy Haul (50 HSS Pieces) |

It's something I would consider if I didn't already have more carbide than I know what to do with. My lathe came with a massive plastic box of the stuff. |
21/09/2020 15:23:31 |
It's all too big for the holders I have (and I have some pretty big holders)! |
21/09/2020 15:19:27 |
I think metal is metal to them TBH. Last time I visited they sold me 3kg of barely used carbide inserts. Shame not many of them fit my tooling, but it's the thought that counts. I'll dig out a picture. Edited By Lee Jones 6 on 21/09/2020 15:23:58 |

Yes, I have a collet chuck and a mid-sized floor standing milling machine. No plans to put any of the cutters in the lathe. I don't have a horizontal milling machine, but I do have an R8 arbor that takes them. Not sure if using the larger milling cutters as slitting saws is such a good idea though.

So I went a bit giddy today at the scrappy (only went for a bit of aluminium). Even if I never use this stuff, I still had a good time foraging. £35 though. Might go every week. What are your thoughts? |

Thanks guys that's super helpful. @John Pace, I watched that too, but it's not relevant unfortunately. |

Don't laugh! I realise this might not be a *thing*, but ... I am already in the possession of a bench lay whetstone to sharpen some of my tools. However, I've seen a few videos of late where a few of the popular hobbyists use (hand) stoning to finish the edges of their work. Are these just the usual Aluminium Oxide/Silicon Carbide stones or something a little more specialist? I did watch a video [0] in an attempt to educate myself, but it turns out the range/choice is even wider than I first thought. [0] **LINK** |

To be honest, I don't have anything to compare it to. It's doing what I require of it. Although it is still noisy during some operations. |

The APE height gauge arrived, used but in nice condition quality is excellent. Accurate too, when checked against my gauge blocks its spot on. I really like the micrometer adjustment, super smooth and feels just right. I put an offer in on ebay and got it for £30, can't complain at that. Good things come to those who work in imperial! |
