Thread: Missing Issues |
10/11/2020 22:00:15 |
Just wondering if other US subscribers have experienced any lapses in ME publication and delivery? Just received an October issue of MEW but no ME's for over a month now. Can someone this side of the pond tell me if they have ME's beyond the August 14-27 issue. |

WOW--I must have missed something in the rules for posting on this web site that indicates items should be on TOPIC---ME etc. Must be some computer glitch on the WWW that allows this! Heaven above only knows we have enough of CV info 24 hrs per day on this side of the pond without having to view it from your side of the pond also. Hats off to all EM, testing, treating and advising persons in your part of the world. These individuals are doing a tremendous job here and are risking their lives daily to perform their jobs to care for the multitudes. If your not infected give thanks and rejoice in that FACT! |

Thread: New Lathe addition to workshop |
12/06/2019 22:20:10 |
Recently acquired this Weiss variable speed 10x30" Lathe. I chose to utilize the 200 series QCTP sized package. Tool holding package will hold a 3/4" boring bar and other tools quite rigidly. Using the 200 sized QCPT holders requires some minimum modification to the imported lathes in this size range to correctly fit. The speed ranges are 50-1000 RPM &100-2000 RPM with the easy belt reposition from one pulley to another. The lathe has powered cross and longitudinal feeds and reversible lead screw for rt and left threading abilities. Unit comes with a chip pan and a chip barrier. The chuck guard is interlocked, my first reflex was to disable and use it without but after a little use I like the feature of containing chips while cutting close to the chuck so will leave it in place as it is not that restrictive with adequate illumination that is provided by the clip on LED light from Wal Mart for the princely sum of $12.95. Sure beats the $50 dollars for most mag based lights of similar output. Also added two 18" HF magnet bars for frequently used tooling storage. The Lathe is setting on one of Sam's workbenches that assembles in about 15 minutes has a 1-3/4" thick hardwood top, powder coated frame with fully adjustable legs for height and leg leveling screws for the 4 corners, overall very well constructed unit for $209 plus tax out the door! |

Here is a concept I have recently placed under my new lathe installation. Each tray measures 8x24" inside and accommodates various bars stocks and materials I utilize. Trays can easily be moved to other workshop areas if needed. As soon as I figure out how to publish more than one picture per post I will review the lathe and tooling recently installed in my shop. |

Thread: Red Line Water gauge |
01/01/2019 14:26:43 |
Many years ago while building steam locomotives I utilized the Redline type water level sight glass system that greatly enhances water level visibility. Currently using WL sight gage glass that are smaller in dia. than most redline gage glass material offered. To solve the problem you can easily make a gage redline on any tube diameter you would like to use. My method consist of masking the portion of the gage glass you want to have the red line on, I use somewhere between 90 & 120 degrees of the tube OD of tube and do a light glass bead blast of that masked off area, then apply a coat or two of Dykem red layout dye to the textured surface, the dye application adheres to the lightly textured surface quite well. If you over apply the Dykem and experience some run under the masked surface the excess can be easily removed from the non textured tube surface wit a solvent wetted Q tip. Have tried this method on tubes as small as 3/16" in diameter and as large as 12mm. |

Here we go again. Seems like any photo taken with cell phone in portrait format gets rotated 90 deg. on posting but if you take photo in Landscape format it post as normal, without any rotation. Edited By Neil Wyatt on 16/12/2018 23:06:27 Edited By Neil Wyatt on 16/12/2018 23:09:33 |

Thread: Copper Boiler Construction? |
10/12/2018 00:24:01 |
Would like to hear from some experienced copper boiler builders. Currently starting to build a CliShay type boiler designed by the late Robert Maynard of Cincinnatti, Oh. His boiler plan for a 4" dia. water tube boiler design indicates outlets for steam appliances like PR valve, Pressure gage, Steam supply, whistle etc. calls for Bushings going into openings to support these items are tapped 3/8-24, one top of boiler opening bushing calls for a 1/8 th NTP thread. Question is which thread is more appropriate and will seal the best? Should you use the straight thread 3/8-24 with a suitable pipe sealant or use a NTP type thread that seals on a taper fit? Any wisdom and advise on this subject would be appreciated. Regards. Bob E.
