Thread: Cooling oil unit for saw or lathe
05/12/2018 14:00:01

I have put two photos in my album showing a simple cooling system made for my bandsaw.

All you need is tank, can be an old saucepan, plastic box, paint drum ect

Pump from dead washing m/c+ supply tube from same m/c

Few standard pipe fittings.

Pump is fitted to base of tank, tube from pump outlet back up to play on sawblade. Oil flows from drip tray back to tank, which is mounted on bottom shelf of sawunit.

It,s simple,cheap,and it works.

It,s called "The Economy Model " Try it !

Pictures might not be too clear, but the idea is ;Drip tray over tank over pump, then outlet from pump back to top..

Pump is wired to saw switch, one on,both on.

A tank holding about 1 gallon is big enough for saw, for lathe use 2 gallons is better.

Thread: Interests other than Model Engineering

Yes Cooking no1 [why are we all so fond of cooking ??]

No 2 Swimming,still do it at 80

No 3 Reading Mostly Non Fiction.

no 4 Spending more time with my two Red Setters, while I still have the time

no 5 ----

No 6-------

No 7------------

I could go on and on,problem is I have too many interests and not enough time to fit them all in. Like the rest of us I suppose Interesting subject, for all that !

Thread: The demise of the High Street
03/12/2018 13:35:34

Much the same over here, small town about 1 mile long x 1/2 mile thick, seem to think they,re L.A.

Shop rents/Rates are way out of line, parking is as rare as hens teeth, result is that every time I go into town, another place has closed down. The local shopkeepers fought off Tesco years ago then arrived Lidl and Aldi !

Different story, these guys are not going anywhere any time soon.Good parking, good range of goods, good prices

Local shops ?Goodbye !

Councils need to talk to local shops, both need to sort out proper parking. This is 2019 [almost ],the car is a fact of life, might as well get used to it.

Thread: V belts and gears

Thanks very much Bikepete, you wont believe it,but the name turned up,just after I had posted !

My filing system is CRAP,the item I wanted was staring at me and I could not see it. However,I have now marked it out LOUD AND CLEAR !!

A call to this Forum never fails !

Thanks again .

02/12/2018 12:57:33

Good morning everyone,

I,m trying to locate a supplier who was mentioned here some time ago in relation to v belts, flat belts ect. I took note of the name,at the time but have since misplaced it,not unusual in this house !

I seem to remember they were called something like "Belts on line" or similar.

Do any of you know of them ?

Thanks for any assistance.smiley

Thread: Todays update from Bodgers Lodge

Remember coming across something like this years ago, where they were building up the shaft of a turbine and then bringing it back to size. May have been in the old Macano mag ?

Thread: Cheap carbide inserts - where's the market?
01/12/2018 16:49:43

I have cut 16mm many times using HSS for inside and outside threads. What,s the problem ? Why use inserts ?

I know I ,m good,but not that good [I still have problems parting off,like many others ]

I got fed up messing around with inserts, this type and that, and went back to HSS

Give it a try,you might be surprised.

Thread: Turning Welded steel
01/12/2018 16:40:53

Forgive me for throwing in my tuppence worth, but I found long ago that trying to turn welded steel parts is a very good way of ruining good turning tools,to say nothing of the lathe itself. Welding seems to harden the steel to such a point that it just laughs at the toolbit, before breaking it.

I dont do it any more. Angle grinder is a lot cheaper, and just as fast.

As I say,,For what it,s worth !

Thread: Cost effective way of measuring 90degrees very accurately on Milling machine
01/12/2018 16:30:48

Men Ifr,

No machine is any more accurate than the machine which made it,there is no such thing as Apsolute accuracy ,even at top level. How far back do you want to go? back to the foundry ?

Unless you are making stuff for the Space Program [like I am,although they wont accept my offerings ],I dont think I,d worry too much about it. Neil gave good advice, but as I said,it depends on how accurate the thing was made,to begin with.smiley

Thread: Washing machine motor
01/12/2018 10:53:39

I used to think that way too,at one time, but proper motors are easy enough to come by,so not worth the trouble.

As for using them on a saw bench ?????? You must be joking !!,nothing less than 1/2 hp would be any use for that, and then T,E,F,C.

Give it a new home------in the dump.

Thread: Workshop security - CCTV
29/11/2018 19:14:27

For what it,s worth,

I have two dogs roaming free around my site. They dont mind anyone coming in,but it,s a different matter when they try to leave.!

The word seems to have got around !

Call the cops ? forget it,you might as well call the Pizza Man,chances are he would get to you !wink

Thread: Mk1 Super 7 - What colours ?
29/11/2018 17:52:41

Welcome to my hat Bill !

Yes,I think many of these machines are bought more to be looked than used,or perhaps the restoration is an end in itself. I suppose it,s a case of "Whatever turns you on " Would make no difference to me if the machine was black with pink dots,or yellow with green stripes.

My Chinese lathe is painted khaki and red unusual ? maybe, but it helps it to blend in well with the general state of the workshop, and when I cut a few lumps out of myself. Also helps it to keep a low profile.

My mill is painted cream,a bit "Showy " I think, but then "Live and let live" I say,if it,s happy and works, who am I to argue.

When they,re all covered in swarf, who cares what colour they are ?

Think we might need to get another tin hat,I can see the flak coming !!

Why do I always manage to stir the pot ? I never mean to [hand -on- heart ]cheeky

29/11/2018 14:10:52

Dont see it makes much difference what colour a machine is as long as it works !

Should I now get my tin hat ??cheeky

Thread: Unnecessary waste of paper
28/11/2018 20:36:04

Dont even try to understand this type of thing,I dont,I just ask them to repeat since I dont understand, and guess what ? Yes,they send out the same crap again !

It,s called PROGRESS or something !cheeky

Thread: Blackening steel parts

Thread: Better tool system for chineese lathes?
28/11/2018 17:04:04

He,s not joking, The earth is flat and the moon is made from green cheese ! So said my Granny, and she knew everything [or so my Grandad always said ]

Anyway, what,s wrong with having a lathe in your kitchen,I think it looks great ! Mind you,not too sure SHMBO would agree, but then, when do they ever ?smiley

Seem to remember there was a thread about this subject not too long ago. Hang in there, someone will be along soon.

Thread: Engine hoist in the Birmingham area,
26/11/2018 13:36:22

Hi Jimmy B,

Same thing happened to a friend of mine some years ago when he went to hire a Mini Digger. The hire cost was such that it was cheaper to buy,and use as required and sell it on later. In fact,he never did sell it,having done all he needed,it had more than paid for itself and was loaned out to friends from time to time.

Hire charges are not cheap,as I found when I had to hire a welder many moons ago [I now have three ! ]

A fold-up crane is a most useful thing to have about the shop, along with a chain block. Neither of them are dear.

Worth thing about !

Thread: Anyone bought a new Myford
26/11/2018 13:25:11

£800/£9000 is a lotta lotta money to spend on any lathe, unless you have plenty of work for it.

Although not comparing like with like Shapiro offer a lathe with a 50mm bore for little more than that, delivered !

No doubt Myford are good, but that good ?????

I think I might have to stick with my Chinese junk for a bit longer.

As others have pointed out, there are issues with Myford machines, this should not be the case, since they are long enough at the game. I dont think one can afford to stand still in a business like that, you have to keep up to date or you become history.
