Thread: Beaten and robbed.
27/01/2020 12:10:30

Have been cases here where people bought cars from guys in carparks, miles from where they lived.

Paid cash for cars they knew nothing about from guys they knew nothing about, then came home only to find that the "cars" were nothing more than write-off,s

Any redress ??? You must be joking ! They had no idea where these people lived.

Thread: Why does everyone disagree with you
27/01/2020 11:56:46

You get used to it, after a while.

I no longer get upset when my posts don't show up.

As someone said, just pick out the bits you find useful and ignore the rest.

Life is too short to bother about it.sad

Maybe they operate 24/7 ?????

Thread: Morse Taper Removal
25/01/2020 19:20:54

I always give the drawbar a little help with the aid of a piece of lead filled copper pipe 1" dia.

On another note, yesterday I drilled 25mm from the tailstock [ in stages ] without anything slipping.

Thread: Moving a Sieg SX3 Mill
24/01/2020 13:50:38

If you can find a friend with a van and a garage crane, [like me !] it will make things a lot easier.

I had no problem handling my no 5 flypress with van and crane.

One other thing I found very useful was a chain hoist from Machine Mart. Don't know how I got along without it before.

Thread: Can we have a really clear distinction between Silver Soldering and Brazing
23/01/2020 13:43:11

Simple, Silver soldering is done with silver solder rods, which cost mad money.

Brazing is done using brass rods, which are quite cheap and the joint is stronger, just needs more heat.

Thread: Fly press weights.
22/01/2020 15:12:04

Baz,

Sad to say, Cromwell found better use for his cannonballs around here !and then he brought them home to use them somewhere else [waste not want not ]

I forgot to mention that the press is a number 5, so I think the weights would be somewhat bigger than 100mm.

Still have plenty of ideas from the response.

21/01/2020 09:47:33

Good morning all,

Having now got my flypress set up on its new bench, I am looking for ideas about how to make weights for it. Suitable lumps of cast iron are somewhat thin on the ground around here. Even the local scrapyard has nothing much to offer [scrapyards are not what they used to be ]

Any ideas ? I,m sure some of you have been there, done that.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Thread: Bevel gears.
20/01/2020 14:43:02

Thank you Jason, I stand corrected ! and you are right, they are quite good for price and range.

Thread: Cheap alternative to replacement Record hardened jaw plates?
20/01/2020 14:39:02

I have a 6" Record vice some 46 years old and thought about getting new jaws for it until I saw the price ????

Needless to say, that,s as far as I went ! They are mad money, so I will think about mild steel or gauge plate, even if it has to be smooth.

Thread: Mobile Phone
19/01/2020 15:43:10

I live in the sticks and I can NEVER get good reception from Friday afternoon till Monday morning.

Error in connection

No network coverage

Network busy

Blah blah blah

Drive into Aldi/lidle no problem !

So, welcome to the club, you are not alone.

I only hope nothing ever happens to me on a weekend !!

Thread: Bevel gears.
19/01/2020 15:30:37

I think I saw such gears offered by a supplier called Belts-on-line.

They offered all sorts of gears in many different sizes.

Might be worth a try.

Thread: Flange Sets
19/01/2020 15:26:56

I think that last post might indeed be the way to go.

£30.90 ???? a bit rich for me !

Thread: Honda Brake Cable
19/01/2020 15:16:17

Was a time when you could buy cable and outer cover by the yard and make up your own lengths, for push bikes that was. I heard of guys making up such cables to operate the points on model railways.

Don't seem to be available now, can only buy set lengths for set bikes, at a price !

Am trying to remember the name of cables of yonder year, anyone out there remember them ?

Thread: Colchester rescue.
19/01/2020 10:48:48

Difficult to understand why spare parts are so hard to get and so expensive for so many of these machines, and not just Colchesters .Would be enough to put anyone off trying to save them
