I f anyone wants to steal anything of any real value from my workshop, they better bring it with them themselves ! On a more serious note, I agree with Neil, people are nervous ,and with good reason. Houses, workshops, vans are being cleaned out all the time, even here, in the sticks. Had my van cleaned out some years ago, still not sure how much stuff was taken, only miss the item when you go to look for it. So, take care, all the time. |

Thread: Screwcutting in the lathe |
21/07/2020 08:58:04 |
I have recently cut 26tpi threads on 1/2" tube for a friend who was making some light fittings [26tpi is the thread in lampholders ] It seems that it is also the thread used in old ballcock fittings but in that case the od of the tube was 9/16" I cut the threads using HSS without any problem. I do have an old 26tpi tap from way back, could it be cycle thread ? |

Forgot to say, I was thinking about using in a rear toolpost. I did buy one of those units years ago but never found it to be any good. Try turning the blade around. I never bother parting off from the front. |

Should the thick edge not be at the bottom anyway ? Does the top edge not need to be thinner in order to provide clearance.? Just asking ! |

As PGK said, a little work with a hacksaw and file would soon produce a useable spanner. I have made several such for odd jobs over the years where the cost of a "Proper" spanner could not be justified. They may be crude but they still work years later. |

Chris Tick-Tock, Three jars in your chuck ???? Really, what is this forum coming to ? Bad enough to have three jars in the pub, and then have to find your way home ! PS Why dont they make keyboard letters BIGGER ??? |

Correction, I should have said drill the holes to suit the outer dia of the tap so that the block supports it. |
16/07/2020 18:16:52 |
I have a short piece of 3/4" square bat, drilled to suit tapping sized drills for 5mm,6mm 8mm 10mm and another block for 12mm. To use I simply clamp the block over the hole to be tapped, thus keeping the tap upright. Nothing fancy, but it works, so gammy threads are now a thing of the past. I might add that there are very few situations where this "Jig" cannot be used. It,s simple and cheap. |

Hi Larneyin, Welcome to the club. The older you get, the worse it gets, trust me !, I ,m well advanced at this stage. I need to keep two pairs of reading glasses around all the time, to be sure of finding at least one set when required, and I,m only 82 and a bit ! I hate to think what I,ll be like when I get REALLY OLD !!! |

Never ignore insults, you might be able to use them someday. Never refuse abuse, if you done need it, you can always pass it on. Last but not least Dont mind what anyone say,s about you, as long as it,s true !! From one who has been at the receiving end, more than once. Life is too short to get annoyed by such creeps. |

Nothing wrong with using a Workmate bench for welding up things, I do it all the time and I have a 40 ft x 20ft workshop. Problem is that I cannot see the real workbench anymore, it has become submerged in half-finished jobs. Anyone else been there ? Also, nothing wrong with making up your own countershaft, it,s not for show, is it ? |

Perhaps it might be cheaper to just leave the bike in for repair to your local shop. Sounds like he is not really into lathe work just yet. |

A recent trip to my local scrap man to sell a few bags of copper scrap pipe and old brass fittings produced enough cash to fill my van with diesel on the way home plus a few bottles of wine ! Fair deal, I thought. |

Peter, My Nu Tool drilling machine was bought in 1983 and is still going strong, might think about getting new belts for it some day ! But you know what they say "If it aint broke, dont fix it " Good advice ! |
