Thread: Gone to the great workshop in the sky |
27/10/2020 16:14:44 |
This is never an easy time or task for those left behind, as I know only too well. God help whoever has the job of sorting out my shop, they wont know where to start ! Perhaps this subject might be worth a new thread ???. i dread the thought of a dealer moving in and clearing the lot for buttons, but no-0ne seems to be interested in machine work anymore. Other Members views welcome. Good advice there from other Members, be guided and good luck. |
Thread: Smart and Brown Model L |

What,s wrong with a new Chinese "junk" machine at half the price ? It,s new, no need to go hunting for parts, can be used right away and will do all you want it to do. OK, it may not be a "Cult" machine, but so what ?, I bought one to begin with and am still using it 20 years down the line. I dont know about you, but I did not have either the time nor the skill to set about "Restoring" a clapped out lathe, I wanted something which worked and which I could use straight off. Regarding cost, there might not be very much in the difference and remember, you are not making parts for spaceships. If you are like most of us, many of your efforts will end up in your scrapbox ! How do I know ? Ask me ! but it,s all part of the fun. Buy a lathe and get stuck in, remember SWARF IS BEAUTIFUL !!!!! [ Just a bit messy ] |

Hi Paul, I dont know the machine in question, but as you are starting out, I doubt if you would have it very long before seeing its limitations. Once you get into things, you will want to try screwcutting,,facing, boring ect, this is where the powerfeed comes in. Andrews advice is spot on. PS Take care, you have been bitten by a bug worse than Chinese flu and harder to shake off ! |

Would make a nice Christmas gift for S-W-M-B-O ! Problem is How could you tell them apart ???? |
Thread: Tap/Die sets - BSW/BSF or UNC/UNF? |

Would have to agree with S-O-D about how difficult it is to find Whitworth screws. I needed some recently to repair a piece of old farm machinery and found it near impossible to get any locally. Some places I went to just looked at me as if I had two heads, had no idea what I was talking about. Nothing except Metric or UNF.. I ended up making some, which did the job, a bit slow and not something you would like to have to do all the time. On top of all that, the price of the few I did get was Mega Bucks !,seems like nobody is making them anymore. When they went Metric over here, they went all the way. |

Bought one of those things recently in Lidi, quite cheap and totally useless. |

Thank you Bazyle, I think you might be somewhere near the mark. On the other hand, the VIKINGS did land around here at some stage , so, ---------------------? |
Thread: Why is this guys mini lathe parting off so well? |
22/10/2020 10:10:42 |
Such kind observations from Mick B1 !! Yes, I too thought I saw the toolpost nodding, too much, I thought and I was not to impressed by the cutting. It was no better than my own results, and that,s saying something ! As S-O-D said, parting off is never a simple operation, I get good results/bad results with my Craftsman lathe although I use a rear tool post all the time. Seem to remember Sparey made the same point in his book. and he did mention a spring type holder for threading, which he claimed gave better results. I now use tips from China, held in a thin steel strip which I find work fairly well. I did not buy the complete holder, just the blade and tip in order to try it out The "holder" was made from what was to hand, but worked so well that I made two. They are crude, and I mean rough, but they work. It might be worth Philip,s while to try one of these units |

My excuse is that I had "Help" from a "friend", who knows ? how to do these things ! Bear with me !! The photos are in my album. |

I would be obliged if this attached object could be identified. cf photos in my album. I have had this metal object in my possession for years and only just rediscovered it in the bottom of an old press. its identity still remains a mlystery - au secour! Thank you in advance. regards Larry |

Thread: Two Drills |
13/10/2020 12:41:55 |
I have one of their cheapy bench drills, Aldi/Lidle ? I forget, so long since I bought it. No, it,s not a top grade machine, but for much of the work done in a small shop, it suits fine. Speed might be a bit fast for some users but I find I can still drill 1/2" holes if I need to, so for 50 Euro, I find it hard to fault it and it was handy enough to use for site work. Mostly used for shop work these days. My one has no fancy electronics, nor do I see the need for them, one motor one drive belt, two sets of pullies, what more do you need ? |
Thread: Grumpy old men |

1 Grumpy old women 2 Grumpy old men [like me ] 3 the use of the word "So" and "Like" all over the place and also "You-know" [My answer is, "No I dont know" ] 4 The stupid way people get excited over things they can do nothing about. 5 Bad grammar by people who should know better [Do they still teach grammar ? ] 6 " At this point in time " Not one second before or after, just right now !! I could go on and on !! |
Thread: Another lathe question |
10/10/2020 09:29:34 |
I am surprised that they would complain about the noise from a lathe or a mill, it,s no worse than that from a Hi Fi unit. How do I know ? Ask me !! Now, someone mentioned an angle grinder, now there,s a GREAT IDEA! How about a power washer ? [Just have to clean up these flag stones, you know should only take a few hours ] Just as well you dont restore old motorbikes ! |

Most of these dogs will be dumped, just as happens every Christmas. A dog is not a plaything to be disgarded when the novelty wears off |
05/10/2020 12:28:25 |
Sad to say, the same thing happens over here too. Makes me sick every time. The main reason I support the I-S-P-C A. Dont know how people can just dump a dog like that, makes me wonder how they would treat other humans. |
Thread: Work Holding for simpletons |

Delighted to have seen that setup ! And I thought my efforts were bad ! However, I do admire a brave man., but I really think a 4 jaw chuck would be a better idea. I can just picture that piece taking off at a rates of knots when you start cutting |
