Thread: Recommendations for a good/decent mobile hoist?
12/11/2020 09:32:39

Hi Ady1

A few years ago, I made a lifting barrow based on a design seen in MEW.

There are photos of it in my album, it,s nothing fancy but it works, can lift from ground level to lathe or drill table height. Chucks or heavy workpieces are no problem. Can be used as an extra table if required, was cheap to build and great for loading/unloading stuff from cars/vans..

Would be happy to send you more photos or details if required.

This is a back and a toe saver, believe me !smiley

Dont know why you guys are complaining about the "Manuals " ??

I find them very entertaining to read, now that my local library is closed. Some of the best fiction I ever came across !

As long as you dont need to depend on them or worse still, understand them, they are fine for light reading.

The one that came with my lathe seems to have been intended for some other machine altogether and the one for my rotary table is in a class of its own !

Might be worth having a word with your local Take away, and yes, I agree, there is No excuse for suppliers failing to include a simple-to-understand manual. They might consider the Market they are selling to. I do not accept that it would cost that much extra, how many different ones would there have to be ?smiley

Thread: Raising the working height of a bench top Mill
08/11/2020 10:08:06

My Lu x mill sits on a frame made from 40x40 box tube about 600x600 square, plenty of room underneath for storage.

When I found it was a bit too low [too much stooping ], I raised it by putting a 4"concreat block under each leg.

Problem solved. To be sure, to be sure, I fixed it to the wall at the top of the column with a strap.

Talking about the bits that come or dont come with lathes, I was lucky that my Craftsman lathe came with a full kit, including faceplate and steadies.

Are faceplates still supplied as standard ? dont see them mentioned in adverts these days.

Nice little project there !

For a simple chuck key, is it worth the bother ?

I made a second key for my 4 jaw chuck, just four flats and a tommybar, simple/effective.cheeky

Thread: Two sides of a coin?

I get the feeling that this "Virus" is being used as an excuse to cover everything from pure laziness to pure stupidity. Considering that almost everything is handled by computers these days, I fail to see why this be.

Strange to say, the invoice for my broadband connection has no bother making its way to my door !surprise
