Thread: Article on profile tooling for a lathe? |

I ,ve seen things like that for wood lathes but never for metal lathes. Sounds like a set up with a number of stops, not sure how it might work. |

Is that not what they use filing buttons for ? Seem to recall seeing them mentioned many times over the years, and you dont even need a milling machine. |

This looks to me to something of a red herring ! |
Thread: How the Fork can I do this? |

Dont waste your time, just buy a new handle and fit it. You dont even have to shape them these days, not like years ago. |
Thread: What Metal is this? |
20/11/2020 10:16:06 |
I have a piece of steel lucking under my bench, glaring at me every time we meet. It,s about 45mm dia, dirty grey in colour, and as hard as a H------r,s boot. No idea what it is, but I,m not about to let it anywhere near my lathe. |
Thread: Spares stock... |
20/11/2020 09:47:30 |
I dont keep spares. How do I know what I,m going to break ? At the same time, I did have to buy a drive belt for my lathe last year, when it frayed. I was both surprised and disappointed at this, since I only got 20 years from it. ! Must have been a cheap Chinese junk one !!! Really, it,s not worth keeping a stack of spares because you can bet you wont have the one you need when the time comes. This is known as "Sods Law " |

Give the dog a bone and let him sleep ! Stick a piece of plastic over it and forget you ever saw it. |

Martin mentioned a thing called a "bus" What,s that ? what does it look like, what does it do ? Has anyone ever seen one ? Please tell ! |
Thread: Tailstock Offset Issue |
18/11/2020 16:45:12 |
I,m with Jeff on this one ! What,s 1/8 " between friends only 1/16" each ? Just get on with the job, life is too short to get your knickers in a twist over silly things like that. Ask yourself a simple question, if the job was out by 0,002 thou, would it make any real difference ? A six inch rule is good enough for most of my butchery ! |

Thread: Wheels or frame for power hacksaw |
17/11/2020 10:18:49 |
Perhaps a hacksaw is more prone to creep than a bandsaw, due to the action of the blade ? I dont have one, only bandsaws, and once those castors are locked the machine never moves. Food for thought. |
16/11/2020 14:16:03 |
Dont see what,s wrong with a set of simple castors, two plain two locking, foot operated. I have two bandsaws, one mortice machine, one bench saw [not small ] all mounted on castors. St ill waiting for any of them to fall over. Castors come in many sizes and there is one out there to suit your need. |
Thread: Cutting copper tube square |
14/11/2020 16:07:47 |
This might be a little off topic, but I thought it might be worth a mention. Many years ago, I saw a good trick for marking a pipe/tube at an angle, the tube in question being 8or 9 inches/ What he did was to spread a handful of soot on the surface of a barrel of water and having marked the pipe both sides, where it need to meet a flat plate, he lowered it into the water until both marks met the surface, then took it out. The result was a clear black line, showing exactly where to cut. So simple ! |

Lynne, I like that idea ! never thought of that one, so, learn something new every day. |
Thread: Surface milling |

Quite right Circlip ! I am a Model and Production Engineer. I produce loads of stuff, but sad to say, no one wants it! There seems to be no market for junk these days ! |
Thread: Cutting copper tube square |

May not be quite the same thing, but some time ago I was asked to provide a large number of 3/4" copper tube short lengths 1" long. No idea what they were for, I dont even ask ! I did it by mounting the tube in the chuck and supporting the overhang using a suitable plug held in the tailstock and parted off. The pieces remain on the support when cut and are easy to collect, no rooting in the swarf to find them. I understand that this would not work in your case, not many lathes have a spindle bore that size, but might be of interest to others, PS, The old "Paper around the tube " is an old trick, but it still works ! |

Perhaps the whole idea of having four cutters is to get the job done faster ? |

Hi Ady 1, This lifting barrow is perfect for dealing with chucks, vises, rotary tables, large workpieces, bottled gas, concrete blocks ect, as long as the floor is good. When it came to lifting my lathe and LUX mill into place, I used an engine or workshop crane, bought from Machine Mart years ago. Had no problem lifting my planer or spindle moulder either, both big machines, and it folds down to take up very little room. Would not be without it at this stage, a bit too old for that game now ! Trying to manage my 4 jaw chuck set me thinking, toes are bad enough as they are. PS One other point-----Keep round bars, tubes ect off the floor !! Dont even ask why !!! Take care everyone. |
Thread: ML7 toolpost - Turns Under Load |

The toolpost on my lathe clicks in and locks in any one of four positions. I thought all toolposts were like that ?? |
