Thread: Lower back issues |
18/07/2021 09:21:37 |
Ady1, dont know if you ever got around to making that lifting platform I mentioned some time ago, but my one has been a Godsend for my back when lifting chucks vises ect. I screwed up my back years ago moving a washing machine, still not right, so I dread having to change a wheel on the roadside ! There is not really much they can do for your back, no matter what they tell you. It,s like a machine, easy to damage, difficult to fix ! Dave, You need to see about fitting grab handles near your toilet, dont ask how I know ! |
Thread: Testing the Euro / IOSS |

I have a feeling you might not be selling too much to anyone in the EU, with all the extra charges involved. Interesting times indeed. |
Thread: Can't get the hang of HSS! |

Might I suggest checking Sparey ? I know he,s regarded as Old Hat, but he does cover this subject fairly well. I dont use much brass [too dear to play around with ], but I do know that it likes a higher speed than BMS, along with really sharp tools. Just my pennyworth. |

When it comes to boring, Sparey is your friend ! He,ll tell you all about spring cuts and flexing ! W ell worth a read. |

It,s nice to be able to pass a long length of bar through the headstock, can often save material that way.. |
Thread: Spare jaws wanted for 3 jaw chuck |
09/07/2021 19:55:28 |
There used to be a man named John at Chester, since retired, I heard, who seemed to be the only one who knew, or wanted to know anything about spare parts. Sad to say, he does not appear to have been replaced, so I wish you luck. |
Thread: Sieg baby lathe not starting |

A similar switch is fitted to the Craftsman lathe. Very easy to knock it off when removing the chuck guard. Try turning the shaft . |
Thread: ‘Right to Repair’ |
02/07/2021 18:55:08 |
Guy came to cut my hedges some years ago, called himself an "Agricultural Engineer" ! When I finished laughing, I advised him to try his luck on the Stage. I have heard some good ones, but that had to be one of the best ! |
Thread: Strimmer /BrushCutter … any recommendations ? |

I,m with Duncan ! I found most Bosch stuff to be little better than crap. |
Thread: Progress No.1 Drill |

A 1 HP motor on a drill that size ? I thought the motor plate said 1/2 HP ? Could be wrong . |
Thread: Your assistance requested |
26/06/2021 09:25:55 |
Good morning Ian, I too have a Chester Craftsman lathe and I have just been out to check the leadscrew, which appears to be 7/8",near enough, BUT as far as I know it is 3mm pitch ! I seem to remember checking this some time ago when I was playing around with the threading dial fitting, something I seldom use. Might be worth while to just count the number of threads on the leadscrew. Hope this helps, since it,s not a bad little machine. |
Thread: Carbide inserts confusion |

HSS is by no means difficult to grind an is a lot cheaper than any tips, and can take off a whisker. Have been using it for the last 20 years, no problem. Give it a try, you might be surprised ! |
Thread: Very Dangerous Tap & Die Set! |

One cannot be too careful these days! I once cut my finger with a sheet of drawing paper, with an edge like a knife. Maybe the cardboard box was the danger ? |
Thread: Barbeque Time |

Ask an Aussie friend ! N o -one knows more about BBQ,s than they do !! |
Thread: Securing workpiece for parting in lathe or 'left feed' |
15/06/2021 17:42:45 |
My pennyworth would be that if the workpiece is coming loose in the chuck, the chuck is not much use to you, something wrong ! I decided many moons ago Never to use the hacksaw for parting off, that,s a last resort, try a rear toolpost. PS I dont always have happy part -off,s, break the odd tip now and then, like everyone else. |
Thread: How long does it take to make things? |
13/06/2021 10:04:22 |
With jobs like that, it does,nt really matter how long it takes, what matters is that you CAN do it and can get something working again. I get jobs like that from time to time, and I hate to think how long some of them take. To be sure, I dont make money from them ! Still, it,s great to see the item up and running again. |
Thread: Calculating Diameter |
12/06/2021 17:08:41 |
I think this would involve High Level Maths, way beyond my pay grade. On the other hand, I seem to remember Sparey giving some useful guidelines about this. |

I bought a 5 ton bottle jack in Aldi,s for very little money. Surprising how useful it has proved to be, and it eats nothing ! |

Thread: Another Stolen Loco |
11/06/2021 17:38:16 |
I doubt if this item was stolen for scrap, more likely stolen to order, as my van was some years ago. Dont look to the police to make any effort to find it, the shower here could not even find a van on an island, never mind a model engine ! That item now belongs to some stupid moron who could not make it for himself. |
