Ladies & Gentlemen
https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/sites/7/documents/screw_size_chart.pdf This seems to me to be missing all sizes up to 1/4 inch and I wondered if there was another page. I also wondered if there's somewhere on this web-site where there are useful downloads - but the headings do NOT suggest, to me, where I might find them. Can anybody advise, please? My very best wishes to you and your families for a Happy, Healthy, Peaceful, Successful, Prosperous, Stress- and Covid- free New Year.

Apparently scammers have now started using modified QR codes instead of click here to get you to move to their site to scam you. Source BBC I'm quite safe then because QR codes are far too complicated for me and I would never even think of using one! MC

Ladies & Gentlemen I should be most grateful if anybody could kindly provide me with an email address for Silverline Tools' Customer Service department. None of the alternatives provided on their web-site and I want to contact them about products that appear to be discontinued Very many thanks for your help MC Black (Dr.)

I have received a message from Machine DRO which reads: Machine-DRO unable to attend Midlands Model It is with regret that we have had to cancel our attendance at this year’s Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition due to staff shortages. I hope that is of interest. MC

Range is from 1 to 10mm in 0.1 steps and then 0, .5 and .8 up to 12. The drills fit fairly firmly in the hols so a 2 hand job to extract (one to steady the stand) but on the plus side they will not fall out if the stand is knocked over. [snip]
Rod If the stand is knocked over and the drills don't fall out, will the little ones bend or break? MC

There's no need to apologise I was able to buy boxes some time ago and keep drills in them indoors rather than in shed-workshop (where they might go rusty) Nowadays, one can buy sets of drills loose and complete in boxes but empty boxes is a challenge. I don't want to keep drills in a stand because (a)they will get dusty and dirty and (b) I would have trouble picking them up if I knocked the stand over. I guess there's nobody else who is clumsy! |

I will be happier if mistaken, but … MichaelG.c Since I have all the empty boxes that I need and now mostly filled with drills, I am NOT looking to buy more. I find it useful to have various Letter, Number and Fractional drills because sometimes a drill of an odd metric size is needed and one of the above is a closer match than a metric drill (which I have only in whole and half millimetre sizes) MC

Thank you Dr, While I only live in Essex (not far away), I'd like to have something on hand for future use if need be. This gauge from Proops looks suitable: https://www.proopsbrothers.com/steel-twist-drill--machine-tap-gauge-nf--nc-decimal-equivalents-m0419-1600-p.asp The enlarged image shows holes labelled 1 to 60. At £2.40, it's NOT a huge investment if it turns out to be wrong. MC |

I have NOT been able to find empty drill indices at a sensible price for any type of drills, Metric, fractional, numbers, letters, etc. Just curious … What do you consider to be a sensible price ? MichaelG. I have seen them advertised at over £17. I would consider a Fiver or less to be sensible - depending on which box was offered. I have bought 0 to 10 mm by 0.5 mm in the past for around two or three pounds MC

Posted by Rod Renshaw on 07/10/2022 12:30:11: As this thread has drifted a little from drill gauges to drill stands and boxes, can I ask if anyone knows where one might buy a metric drill set stand for metric drills by 0.1mm sizes. My sets are in boxes and it's a bit of a fag to keep opening and closing the boxes. My first suggestion/question would be whether it is only that one website that is apparently giving a problem. We are told, thus far, that it is one website only. My computer cannot display many web-sites. That means that the relevant company does NOT get my business! |

I have NOT been able to find empty drill indices at a sensible price for any type of drills, Metric, fractional, numbers, letters, etc. I live in the United Kingdom - NOT in Europe I managed to acquire Indices some time ago for all the series of drills that I own - but it would be good if they were still sold empty rather than full of drills. Years ago, after I inherited my father's tools, I decided to try to sort out what was there. I went into a tool shop in Croydon and asked for a drill gauge. They must have seen me coming because when I arrived home, I looked at the gauge and discovered it was for number drills while the drills that I had (loose in tobacco tines) were all fractional sizes. I wet back to the shop and bought a Drill index up to 1/2" and discovered that the holes in the index enabled me to put the drills in the right holes. I have now been able to buy Drill Indices for Metric, fractional, Letter Sizes and Number sizes but irritatingly, nobody sells empty indices any more. If Bosun cares to visit me (Herts), he can use my gauge to measure his drills MC

Weller are a long established reputable company as are Radiospares. I'm certain that the technical boffins in one or the other company will be happy to discuss this problem and give advice. I have reported problems with items bought from Radiospares long after the guarantee expired and found them VERY helpful. What have you got to loose?

Thanks Michael & Dave, A trip to the local fire station is called for I think. Hopefully they will be able to safely empty it and I will not lose the item which is rather nice! Will let you know what they say. Cheers, Martin I suggest that you ask a friend to telephone and ask if the Fire Brigade can dispose of the contents and let you keep the container. If you just go there, you might get an answer that you do NOT wish to hear! The technician at your local Technical College may be prepared to evaporate it in a fume cupboard. MC

I visited Forncett a couple of weeks ago and was given a tour by Dr. Rowan Francis even though it wasn't a Steaming Day. It's well worth visiting even though it's in the Back of Beyond. The Norfolk Tank Museum is only a mile down the road. MC
