Thread: Something for 9yr old to make
04/12/2022 14:04:28

An early woodwork project at my school was to shape a fish out of a block of wood - coping saw to get the outline, rasps to get the shape and the usual sandpaper to finish. Even a pretty rough one was recognisable as a fish, so that was encoraging, and the more effort put in, the better it looked. Then a square wooden base and a dowel as a stand.

Thread: Toys for Christmas

I was thinking extra QCTP toolholders, but then discovered I have a couple more than I thought I had, so may try for a Hemingway kit - the tailstock die-holder.

Although a nice rule with engraved graduations would also be useful - do they still make them?

I think he pre-dated Israel (son of Moses) by a considerable margin. Could he have been a Canaanite (or, being an artificer in metals, a Tin-Canaanite)? wink

Looks good, David.

No, that should work the right way, Myfords, Boxfords and my Taig are all arranged that way round.

If it doesn't, just reverse the motor devil

Don't know if it would help at all - friends over the border, for instance - but the same items appear to be listed on the Ebay Ireland site here.

Thread: Identity of boiler manufacturer

Thanks Michael, that certainly looks like the same boiler. I was just confirming to Roy that Stuart's photos were visible as he seemed unable to see them. yes

Two photos showing up fine for me. Unfortunately, I know nothing about boilers.

Regarding the fit of the taper, you might pick up some useful info from this video by Mr. Crispin, in which he regrinds a lathe taper.

Thread: Boxford Model C tailstock thread
16/11/2022 16:52:10

Just to answer my original question, I've had it confirmed that the thread is indeed 1/2" BSW left hand from new.

Thanks for all the advice, chaps, given me a couple of things to think about (and a shopping list). And a chance to try machining a thread between centres, possibly.

Thanks Hopper. I'm thinking I might re-make the screw as well, given the amount of wear on it - 13 thou over two and a half inches seems a bit excessive! it'll be a challenge learning experience for me to get it exactly right.

Would EN1A be a suitable material?

Hopefully somene will know the answer to this...

Rebuilding the tailstock on my Boxford Model C and have found that the bronze/brass nut is pretty well worn out. Looks simple enough to make a new one, it's 12 tpi, but measuring the screw thread gives me 0.482" at one end and 0.495" at the other, less worn end.

I assume it is a 1/2" BSW thread when new, but can anyone confirm this, please? Edit - Left hand thread, of course.

Thanks in advance.

+1 for the Burgess BK3 bandsaw as long as the material is not too thick, the three wheel arrangement gives plenty of "throat" space in a quite compact machine.

Hello David

Welcome to the forum. You need to make a certain number of posts before you can view adverts - as you have already discovered - so a bit of a conversation here will help. I don't have a mill myself at the moment, and I'm not really into the modelling side of things, but I mainly fix stuff (or make more tools to fix stuff.

There's also a thread here where people make a few posts to gain access to the classifieds.

+1 for not seeing any problem here - parts were identified as asked, and then put up for sale at a very reasonable starting price.

Thread: Central heating pump bearing replacement

Not answering your question at all - sorry! - but if you don't have a filter in your system, get one, as the pumps would last a lot longer.
