Ammonium sulphamate will kill it and horsetail etc. It is still available on eBay and is sold as a compost accelerator but instructions for dilution rates for different weeds come with it. Very effective and the bonus is that the soil is ok to replant in after a couple of months.

Thread: Disposing of Gas Cylinders?
08/05/2021 05:40:34
Posted by Jeff Dayman on 07/05/2021 22:45:36:

Re using up all the gas - I always use these small cylinders until the torch won't run anymore, but there is always a wisp or two of gas in them afterward. Very little, but some. Can't see a way around it except to maybe refill the cylinder. I am aware this is technically easy to do - in fact I have been present when it was done - but locally it is against the law to do it. Not sure why. There may be a concern by authorities that the small cylinders could be over pressurized if fed from the wrong kind if gas supply, maybe?

Jeff, refilling can be done but is dangerous if done without knowing what you are doing. I have refillable propane bottles for the Motorhome, just refill at an Autogas pump at the garage. BUT they have a float valve that cuts off at 80% full. This is to allow for expansion as they warm up, other wise the liquid propane comes out not gas. Bottles without a float have to be weighed as they are filled to ensure 80% max filling. Not something I would attempt.

Thread: Vehi cle Tax Scam
31/03/2021 06:03:20

Just had an email advising me that my recent payment had failed due to insufficient funds in my account. As I had taxed a bike the other day I thought it was strange as there is plenty of money in the account but mainly as it is a historic vehicle the amount is zero!

Mike, I agree most models have settled on telescopic forks but must take issue about the niche models bit. The most manufactured bike in the world, over 100 million, the humble Honda C90 and its derivatives had leading link forks.🙂 . My three Greeves race bikes, like most Greeves have leading link forks. Surprising how many have survived considering they closed in the early70s, although road bike production ceased earlier.

Peter Williams, Norton designer and racer died on Sunday aged 82. Probably the best design engineer of his generation he was also a genuinely nice man with always time to talk to his many fans. His book, Peter Williams Designed to Race, is an excellent read especially for Norton fans. RIP Peter.

Bandersnatch, it was live on YouTube for free.Sorealistic it could pass for the real thing. I can see why all the teams don't link up their factory simulators in real time and run a full race . The green lobby would have a field day.

Thread: Equity release!
01/09/2019 21:09:54

Andrew, The figures don't stack up. Apart from the logistics of finding something with enough garage/workshop space, and I looked at renting before I bought this place, the cost of renting would be about £10k/year. Assuming another ten years of useful life that would be £100k before rent increases. I can release something like that, still own the residual value, and not have the hassle of relocating again. Basically equity release gives you some money and you live rent free in your own property as I see it.Colin

01/09/2019 07:25:48

Interesting comments. As I have already downsized to a smaller bungalow, had a workshop built, sorted out the property to suit me, I am ok for normal living. But that leaves me with a lot of money tied up in property that when I die will be sold for either charities or the governments benefit. Wikipedia explains the various equity release options, I will check out to find the one that will release the maximum amount and anything left can be willed to charity. Having seen inside care homes whilst my mother was suffering with dementia I know that once it starts you cannot have any comprehension of what life is like outside your own little world and are at the mercy of others for everything.

There are lots of reputable companies in the equity release market, obviously in it to make a profit, just a matter of sorting out the wheat from the chaff. Having had previous experience with financial advisors I think I can do as well if not better without paying their commission. Onwards and upwards. Colin

31/08/2019 05:27:34

I feel sure someone else will have investigated or done this and have constructive comments. I want to release the maximum amount and it does not matter how high the interest or how small the residual value at the fiinish as I have no children to leave it to. There is no mortgage outstanding and I am over 70. Will probably spend large amounts on wine, women and song and squander the rest!! Colin

That's what I thought until I saw the petrol tank, but as far as I knew "Manxman" was the name used by Norton on a 650SS in the USA. However I found this

Thread: Acetone
28/07/2019 07:16:19

Nobody has mentioned adding it to petrol to increase mpg. Lots of info on web. I added two stroke to my old diesel, 300cc to 60lt of diesel , definitely ran smoother and quieter with small increase in mpg. Could not see any improvement with a few cc of Acetone but others have. Supposed to reduce surface tension in droplets from injectors , giving better combustion. Colin
