Thread: Chinese draft angles |

I am now waiting for M5x16 Pozi cheese heads (50 for £2 with free shipping) before I can wire it up. While waiting I am de-clattering my splines and fitting a spindle lock. Will I live long enough to finish this thing? Robin |

Yeeeeee-har! I now have 8.5mm for the 5mm bolt heads, I shall have to turn something down to fit Here's the jig... The VFD is held down by a lump of iron and a towel, but it is located by a 5mm pin coming up from below. Above it is a virgin Dormer 8.5mm drill bit aimed exactly at the 5mm pin below. A slow vertical feed on the knee and lots of revs on the bit for a smooth finish. There was 3mm of plastic behind to cut in to and I took half of it. One VFD done, one to go |

So it is a design or manufacture flaw, but if we are going to moan about small errors why is this thread called 'draw angle' when that is not the issue? Hi It is called draft angles because I thought that was the problem in the mould before I spotted the rectangular cut-out next to the 5mm bolt hole. Looks like a puller to me Ever since I discovered zero backlash screws, DRO readouts and amazingly cheap precision measuring tools I have delighted in drilling holes exactly where holes need to be. When I see 5mm holes like these I drill for 5mm bolts and it is wonderful when it all goes together like it never did before. This is what makes it fun for me |

The holes are round. Viewed from below there is a strange slot next to each mounting hole, possibly a mould opening fix which displaced it. I think I may have to make up some kind of counterbore to make way for a reduced bolt head. I have been playing with burrs in my Dremel but I am not very good at the arty farty, freehand stuff |

I have already painted myself into a corner. Luckily I spotted a liana hanging from a light fitting. This allowed me to swing up, Tarzan style, to get this aerial picture... |

I am mounting 2 XSY-AT1 VFD's using the 5mm bolt holes provided. I measure them with my new 200mm dial caliper. I drill them using 5 micron DRO scales for precise location. I go to insert a bolt and it doesn't fit. No room for the head. Curses, foiled again (I didn't mean to start a new chapter in the tea room, get it right next time maybe, Sorry!). Thread: What Did you do Today 2022 |
09/10/2022 13:56:16 |
I just fixed my satellite box. The cables appeared to be at fault. I'd remount the plugs on the wires and it would show 2 good connections, loud and clear, until I tried to watch something then splatt, one or both would fail. I thought I have seen this before. I opened up the box, resoldered the other side of the plug to the pcb, put it all back together and now it works. It was that ghastly, lead-free Euro-solder which needed to be replaced with some good, British, 60/40

Robin Thats life My life improved greatly when I became old. I have no problem complying with the "old" stereotype. It is so undemanding |

Care needs to be taken when purchasing particularly is 2nd hand from relatively unknown sources. John How true. I have BT and NT tapers left over from the wild buying spree I went on while I waited for the mill to arrive. All part of lifes' rich tapestry, I do like the low overhang variety. I need more than one collet chuck because the machine has no spindle lock and 30 taper does not come with spanner flats. Thank goodness it is a non-retaining, there is precious little room for a sledge hammer between draw bar and ceiling Robin |

Today I tried inserting an ISO30 taper into the horizontal spindle of my Warco HV mill for the first time and found it did not fit. It's all wobbly. Angst. Tried another taper, an ER collet chuck. Still no good. Ran around the workshop shouting, "Don't panic" until I was quite breathless. Eventually tried removing the 2 driving dogs from the spindle nose and in it goes, all snuggle bunnies the way it should. Why do I do this to myself? |
Thread: Surface Grinder refurb |

Ideally I’d put the reference surface on the plate directly, and take measurements but, clearly my reference square and surface gauge are nothing like tall enough for that. Me again A deep cut on the surface grinder might be a mm in 20 passes. Cut by hand your tea is stone cold and your cigarette has burnt to nothing in the ashtray. I think your reference square could be a massive overkill albeit very pretty. Here's a thought... If you ever decide to cut with the side of the wheel You can probably tell I lie awake at night trying to get my head around this stuff. Robin |

Am I missing something? How does the spindle alignment with the table matter on a surface grinder? Surely all you need is rigid to the vertical slide, alignment coming when you dress the wheel? I have just replaced the vertical slide on mine with linear rails and a stepper. Precision was not high on my agenda, have I gone terribly wrong? (As usual) Robin |
Thread: Electronics reference book? |
23/09/2022 15:37:26 |
Talking of electronics reference, anyone know where I can find a list of 74 series logic with the little pictures to show how the innards connect to the pins? There used to be listings in Maplins, Rapid, Arrow Jermyn etc. but no more Robin |

The "cook-off" is why your powder flask has a special shutter so only one load can go and not the whole lot. Blowing down the barrel until smoke stops coming out of the flash hole makes you look like you are using Goth lipstick but is quite popular. |
Thread: Anyone ever machined the damage from a mill table ? |
09/09/2022 10:51:49 |
A long time ago I skimmed the bed on my Warco Major because it was no longer flat. I also cut a groove across the back to support a 50cm length of gauge plate standing proud of the surface for alignment purposes. Slightly scary moment when I found the hard spot but I regret nothing |

Can you still get double-sided tooth belts? That'd do it |

Perhaps Robin needs to partake in a bit of reflection? I bought a long length at the last Midlands Exhibition. Worked a treat, with a little practice - and I am likely going to buy some more shortly. Too late for that, I already have a lifetime supply of the Durafix. Life expectancy 86, so 20 rods should do it easy |

Robin, was the Durafix the only stuff that worked? The only stuff that worked for me. Soldering 1/8" thick aluminium channel with Calor gas. It did come with a handy wire brush and instructions for zinc-based metals, aluminium and boat propellers. The aluminium instructions required additional brushing of a hot, "tinned" surface. Apparently, "filling the open pores". The duff rod is going in the bin soon if nobody wants it. Robin |
