Thread: Sunbeam B24 350cc 1939
17/01/2023 08:31:07

The Sunbeam is a late 30s bike, manufactured under AMC ownership. Nickel plating, as a final finish, finished around 1930 therefore the shiny bits would be chrome plated over the nickel.

hopper, what parts would be zinc plated on a bike that age.

None, cadmium or parkerised fixings and shiny parts chrome plated.

Correct in all areas Hopper.

Always a good thing to remember the old saying "when you think you are talking to a fool, first make sure he doesn't think the same!"

Thread: I found this old car but what is it?

Best place for it,only rode in one post war sit up and beg Ford for a few miles ,awful ride, I was once asked to help a friend to get the rear brake drum off a similar Ford ,I could not get it off apparently a special puller was required as the drum and hub were in one piece and I was later told that it was a taper fit on the half shaft. Thats also just like the rear hub on a Triumph Herald ,taper and key fit, another friends car ,a really big screw puller would not move it, so it went to a local garage where they used a hydraulic puller and then had to nearly burn righ through the hub with oxy torch and it then flew off with some force. They did it and saved the half shaft.

That's not a fair comment. They were very cheap and we're built down to a price. Some models were cheaper than a motorbike and sidecar. For all their corner cutting which would you prefer in winter?

Thread: Finding Centre Height
20/12/2022 09:19:54
Posted by Peter Simpson 3 on 19/12/2022 20:53:11:

I cannot believe people go the far ends of the earth to find the centre height. I use the pip method every time. No DTI no measuring just a quick rough check against a fixed centre then a final adjustment against a faces off pip check. One of the most simple tasks using a lathe.

Couldn't agree more.

Thread: Another EVRI calamity.

As Terry-Thomas would say "they're an absolute shower". The amount of complaints on my local Facebook pages are astonishing and yet eBay still keeps promoting their usage! My heart sinks every time I see they are the courier. They're not the new Hermes, they're just the old Hermes with a different name and fooling no one.

Personally, I'm an excellent driver but I'm amazed how many accidents I see in my rear view mirror! laugh

Thread: Can anyone help to identify the make/model/year of this 1930's motocycle?

Some sort of sloper in a duplex downtube frame? The belt driven dynamo is reminiscent of a Velocette but it's not. Probably a DIY adaptation.

Thread: Surface plate stand

One of the 3 feet square granite surface tables in our fitting shop at work was simply sitting on a bench on top of a sheet of 1/2" thick closed cell sponge rubber. It was checked every year by specialists with all the right equipment and had errors less than 5 microns in any direction which was plenty good enough for us. The tables in the inspection were very likely better.

That was always my experience in the real world. Might have been different in Inspection but I never worked there.

I worked in engineering for 45 years and all the cast iron surface plates were mounted on simple angle iron stands or bench tops. It sufficed for all practical engineering purposes in the real world.

Thread: Oils for Hardening

I have read that used motor oil is good because of the carbon content but I have no facts to back that up.

Thread: Rust on New Lathe
12/11/2022 09:31:13

If all new Warco lathes come coated in preservative, why didn't this one? Two possibilities spring to my mind - ex demo or returned machine. Not a new machine in either of those possibilities.

Cushionfloor offcut? Nice light colour if you can get it.

Without wishing to decry any of the suggestions above I would suggest the route to least aggravation is to buy a new tablet. Then relieve your frustration by disassembling the old one with a hammer. I do confess to hating anything containing a computer chip!

Thanks everyone but thinking Sakura solution is the one for me

Good for you. Enjoy!

Thread: Myford hand wheel dial
21/09/2022 09:41:33

I'm sure the handwheel is a fine piece of kit but have you seen the Linntools qd dro? I bought bought both types for my Boxford and they work really well. Just uses magnets and clamps and easily fitted and removed for only when you need them. Usual disclaimers, only a satisfied customer.
