The "slide thing" that runs end to end on your lathe is called the "Carriage". The "slide thing" that runs on the carriage across the lathe is called "the cross slide" IHTH. This LINK will let you download a copy of the "How to run a lathe" book which will give you a lot of usefull info although a little outdated most of it still applies today. regards |

Free ad-blocker software solves that problem on all websites. I use Ad Blocker Plus as an add-on to my Mozilla Firefox browser. Not an ad to be seen anwhere. ( I leave it switched off on the ME site to support the forum and its sponsors.) Hopper, I also use the same software. It makes a huge difference to the viewability of many sites. Nigel, I agree the quickly flashing ads under the "support our sponsers" banner is very distracting. regards |

Just to finish my tale fellas, I fitted the new HDD into my Manhattan Freesat recorder and it fired up OK and has been going great for a couple of days now. Seems to be doing all it should be doing. Keeping my fingers crossed! Good result Malc. regards |

Looks like a great result. Be interesting to see how repeatable it is if you break down the setup and make another one. regards |

Moving forward I’d like to be able to run the motor backwards (better for stud removal etc) and have a degree of speed variability if possible. I believe it has the original Brook Compton 0.37kw A/C motor. Any advice would be appreciated. Add a 3 phase motor and VFD. You get the best of all worlds then. regards |
Thread: Weiss Machinery Youtube channel |

I have YT Premium so as not to get any ad's. It really annoys me that YT allow creators to dump an ad from a sponser in the middle of a vlog. I am not interested in any of the rubbish they try to sell. I have unsubscribed from several channels that do that or constantly promote totally unrelated items on their channel. The others I skip straight over the ad's. I used to like watching Abom79 but he has turned his channel into a advertisers heaven. The other thing is "music" over the commentary. Usually too loud so the two cannot be seperated by my ears anyway. I have sent countless messages to creators asking why they do it and have never had a reply. I am definitely getting grumpier in my old age. regards |

Happened across this video from PetersRailway whilst browsing the interweb. I have never heard of a Clupert Piston Ring. They say you learn something new everyday. A very interesting manufacturing process. Link to Youtube video. Clupert Piston Rings

I have changed hard drives in a lot of DVR's from cheapys to very expensive units. It is not a difficult job usually a few screws and 2 cables on the HD. Just the same as doing it on a PC. Every unit I have changed has gone through it startup procedure and formatted the HD to suit its own system. You can on most DVR's put in a larger HD than was originally fitted. Observe all the usual rules when dealing with electrical and electronic items. regards |

Why not Peter? You can do small work on a large lathe but you can't do large work on a small lathe. I made these a few weeks ago on my Bantam.
I suppose you know it is illegal to manufacture coins of the realm. I'll just hide for a while now. BTW nice looking bolts. regards Edited By Oldiron on 01/06/2023 14:05:37 |
Thread: Boxford - South Bend Interchangable? |
01/06/2023 10:03:22 |
I have changed a Boxford CUD bed with a Southbend one several years ago. If I remember correctly the beds on all the Boxford AUD, BUD & CUD are the same. The only thing may be the gearbox mounting holes could be different on the SB. But in general all the large cast parts are interchangable. The spindle threads on the SB are 60deg & the Boxford 55deg. Good luck. regards |
Thread: Replacement lathes. Recommendations? |
03/05/2023 12:58:44 |
Good luck in your search for new lathes. It makes a refreshing change to hear that a school will put money into machines. Your Boxfords depending on condition and attachments will be worth a good bit. An average price would be between £350 & £1200 depending on model. "T" being the cheapest & "AUD" being the higher price for standard lathes. VSL & 500 varispeeds also fetch a bit more.

Thread: Major flaw in the world of engineering |

Posted by Nick Wheeler on 22/04/2023 15:25:40:I bought my lathe 8 years ago, and the installation procedure was to carry it down the cellar steps, stagger across the floor, plonk it on the bench and plug it in. It's never been bolted down, and the parts produced have always worked well enough.
Exactly the right thing to do Nick. Many beginners read up on things far too technical for their own good. Its ok watching dozens of videos and reading lots of books but use the lathe or mill for a while to see what it actually does or does not do. If you do not have the very basics you will not grasp the more techy bits needed. The very first mistake the OP did was buy a 4 jaw SC chuck. the second was not reading up on how to actually fit a chuck to a backplate. Easy to bang your nose when blundering around in the dark. regards

Currently sat answering a set of clarification questions from IChemE in response to the Chartered Engineer application I made back in 2021. I can't say I am super-impressed by the turnaround time, or the attention to detail by the reviewers, but ultimately they're all volunteers and IChemE's directions to the reviewers sems to actively discourage digging into the details, so it is what it is. What's particularly infuriating though is that because I don't have a neat tidy modern MEng as my educational background I have to essentially duplicate the entire process, resulting in a total of four separate application forms and two interviews each of which comes with its own fees and waiting period. Well good luck Jelly. I hope you are successful in your application. regards |

On the face of it RR seems being extremely wasteful, destructive, mean and selfish, not to mention trying to wipe out their own history. Have they given any genuine, convincing reasons? Selling or renting the building to a dealer in secondhand cars, is not one! I could not agree more Nigel. RR have sold off the building and are leasing part of it back at huge cost just to store all the collection items. They have offered items to the Imperial war museum, Bletchly Park and other places but have not had a lot of interest apparently. In May 2024 anything left in the building is destined for the scrap pile. I have my name down as #1 on the list to collect as much of the leftovers as I want. The lady dealing with the disposal is at a loss as what to do with most of it as for some reason it cannot be sold by auction or other means. I will just bide my time and hope I get a chance at some decent items I will be able to use or give away. Such as the 10 or so vernier calipers from 12" up to 6 ft in length. Many model boats and planes etc just sitting doing nothing. regards Edited By Oldiron on 19/04/2023 21:08:08 |
