You can get carbide burrs for the Dremel. A much better way to do it. An angle grinder is a quicker and dirtier way to go. regards
Thread: Running a Myford in Reverse?
12/02/2021 16:05:42 | ||
A screw-on chuck, as on the Myford or Boxford type lathes, WILL ALWAYS unscrew unless specially secured. That statement is absolute rubbish. OK it is possible but I have done 100's of metric studs up to 20mm on my imperial Boxford using reverse and never once has the chuck tried to come off. My chucks are not stuck on and can be removed without much effort. I mostly use 4" chucks so not a lot of weight involved. The only way it is likely to try to come off if someone is stupid enough to throw the lathe into reverse when running at high speed. The VFD ramps down the speed to a stop and then ramps it back up. As far as I see it why would Boxford have sold lathes with reversing motors /switches if they thought that every time you ran in reverse it wouild throw the chuck off. My brother has an ME10 bought new with threaded spindle & reversing motor. If used properly and with respect I do not seeing running in reverse as a problem. regards

SOD, I DO have a great deal of difficulty in reading the white lettering on a black background. The longer I read the worse it gets, until I start to get a headache. I do a considerable amount of reading and have never had eye fatigue in this way. My usual book reading sessions are around 2 to 3 hours Seriously I would have to give up the forum if that is going to happen The current format of black on a grey background is ideal, it also gets away from the complaint of being "too bright" Andrew.
I 100% agree Andrew. The text colour & background colour on this forum is ideal for me. I have great difficulty reading virtually any mixture of colored text on coloured back ground. Am waiting for eye operation but God alone knows when that will be. I doubt there will be a huge improvement after the op. regards
Thread: Engineering / Modelling Books for Winter Evenings?

What young family can afford to go to Duxford museum or The Portsmouth Dockyard these days if they were open ? Duxford child ticket £11-25 Porstmouth Dockyard cheapest child ticket £19. The dockyard tickets are open for a year but thats only good if you live locally and dont have to travel far. I do not think the wife & I have ever revisited a place in the same year. It wouuld be interesting to see the figures for revisits within a year. I think they would be very low. The price for admission is IMHO way to high. Then the food outlets rip you off even more. regards

Thread: Acknowledgement of contributors

Reading MEW301 last night I realised that the format had changed. The contributor's name is no longer boldly displayed but instead included in the synopsis of the article. The contributors for at least three articles were not so named. I found the the article on the tailstock DRO was written by Duncan Webster from the index. As for the articles on storage and safety I can only think that they came from the editorial staff. I think that the contibutor's name, ideally with a short written profile, should be displayed immediately below the title of the article. Rant over JA I agree that all contributers should have acknowledgement of their work in a very prominent place. regards

The New system gives you more options […] on the very customisable layout, see this forum with it's latest posts at the top right and a lot of other things that can fill that right hand column. . Oh dear [quote]

Hi PatJ. Changing to a new system is not the problem ( as the system is invisible). Changing to a new format (what we actually see) is what people most object to most. Most members here are to put it politley getting on a bit(me included) and change does not come easy. If the forum could have some new features from an update but leave the colours & layout as it is I would agree. BUT any one updating a forum ALWAYS have to put their own touch to it and ruin it for most other people. I have seen it done several times. Just look at the example Ketan gave earlier in this topic, not good at all. Why do we need to know who is the top poster and has 10K bonus points or has the biggest album or who is reading what now ? I doubt very much if many people want to use a forum such as this on a mobile phone as most of us could not see it easily. Using lots of colours can also be a bad thing when you start getting coloured text on coloured back grounds makes it a nightmare some of us with sight problems. I find there is no problem with the phorto upload system here at all. As I said in my earlier post I can upload a photo in a few seconds. I do not understand why people have such a problem with it. regards

Something you may not know as a beginner and I could not see mentioned in any of the great above posts is :- the SCLCL tool is left handed as it cuts left to right and the SCLCR is right handed and cuts right to left. People do get mistaken in this regard as a RH tool points left and a LH tool points right. Good luck with your new toy. Any questions just ask and an answer will just pop right up (usually) regards

I would fotograph mine but it is such a faff to enter the pic. into the album. personally I do not see why it is a faff at all. Click green"album" link at top of page/edit album info/add photos/browse to photo, select & upload. It takes less than 30 seconds to do. I just uploaded the picture of my snow drops in 20 seconds to my album. regards

I still think this forum layout is much beter than Ketans link Everything I need is on the opening page. No need to have to search around and change pages for ads, latest posts etc. If it aint broke dont fix it. Also on that forum everyone can see what you are reading or searching for. Not that I have anything to hide but that seems very invasive to me. regards

The opening did not worry me. It was/is a good question. If I was in a pub in Corby 45 years ago and someone adressed me as "Hey, Jimmy" I would have ducked, trying to avoid the next part of the address! JA Which would probably be F--- O-- Corby is a much more refined place now. regards
