Thread: Looking for a beginners project

Paul. A napoleon's hat clock is not a loncase. Also as they are usually striking or chiming clocks, I would look for a plain clock ( no strike or chime ) for a beginners progect

Roy

I think the mention of longcase clocks was a warning that his wife might overstep the parameters of the auction search for a napleons hat clock mechanism.

Spent the last couple of days replacing to top, back, bottom and both ends of a large multidrawer wooden cabinet my wife bought at a "bargain" price. It is 6ft x 3ft x 2ft deep. Full of damp rot & wood worm supposedly treated. The timber to replace the affected parts cost a lot more than the"bargain" cabinet. The only bits that survived were the mahogany front frame, the sliding glass doors with mahogany surrounds & the drawers. Just need to finish it off with some fettlin then varnish it. Oh and now it needs wall hanging in her study above the desk

As an update to this I rubbed it down ready to varnish and to my surprise all the drawer sliders and front end faces of the cabinet were brass. It had been stained and varnished so many times on top of the brass that it looked just like the wood. So there is about 7 mtrs of 1/2" brass bar in total. I had to polish it all up and now the cabinet looks great.

I was going to post the build of my indexing head but unfortuanatly all the photos taken during the build on the SD card turned out to be corrupt. When I get a bit more time I will strip it down and try to explain how I made some parts and modified other sourced parts to complete the project.

Thread: How to sale dads stuff
22/07/2023 22:37:09

Sorry for your loss. There are Model engineering clubs in Ilford, Romford & Welling (just google "model engineering clubs near Dagenham" If your father was a member of one of these it would be an idea to contact them and see if they have a member or members who can help you appraise what you have. They would most likely help you even if he was not a member. Best not to get in a "buy all items" company unless you are willing to take a huge hit on the value of the bigger items and next to nothing for all the small stuff.

Good luck & I hope you move it on to a worthy home.

Thread: Shrink fits for the model engineers workshop?
18/07/2023 17:20:56

I just overhauled a Jacobs #36 20mm chuck. I pushed the outer sleeve off using a 6" vise along with a collar the correct size I machined for the purpose. After cleaning/derusting & oiling I pushed it back on using the same vise.

I have overhauled quite a few Jacobs chucks & have never seen the need to use any form of heating/freezing to get them to fit together.

Thread: r.i.p. Christmas cards?
17/07/2023 09:39:02
Posted by Mike Poole on 17/07/2023 09:23:07:

I have never sent a Christmas card in my life, my wife has a long list and composes the dreaded news letter which the recipients say they enjoy, they may just be polite though. The present thing is also wasted on me, I can’t think of anything I actually want as anything in the normal range of presents I will already have. My wife insists that presents must be a surprise but I have long ago confirmed my belief that I am useless at choosing a present so don’t bother.
Mike

I maintain an Amazon list for people who insist I need reminding of birthdays & Xmas etc. I can add items I want & even list items Amazon do not stock. My wife does the same so I have no need to ponder the problem at the correct times of the year. Makes it easier for everyone. My wife does the cards so no idea how many go out.

Hi Peter welcome to the forum. Not sure how many wood carvers we have here but there must be some.

I have a couple of woodturners lathe chisels but never used them

Maybe a photo or 2 of some of your projects to tittilate us.

Any questions just ask.

I received a nice letter from the IChemE confirming that I have now justified that between my HND, 13 years experience and MSc, I do indeed meet the knowledge and understanding requirements for Chartered Chemical Engineer...

So I can now submit them a new form showing my mentoring program which developed me to an appropriate level to submit the next form.

I really don't think the Engineering Council ever considered that people would apply at different career stages, or how painful they were making it for applicants when they standardised the CEng requirements between institutions.

Congratulations Jelly. Glad you got a good result at last.

Had a couple of hours in the workshop yesterday. Stripped, cleaned, reoiled my 4" & 5" Bernard 3 jaw chucks. Been meaning to do it for a while.

Finished my 60:1 dividing head I started as a basic plain indexing head 4 years ago. Better late than never.

Today we are off to Bridgnorth in the caravan for a few days.

No idea of the make but looks to be the start of a showmans engine by the look of the generator mounting in front of the funnel.

Do you actually need a personal domain name ? Do you want a website associated with it ?

You could use [email protected] or something very similar. Then no annual fees or webhosting to mess with.

Oldiron - I didn't think many members would know what an FJ40 was !

Very true. I never did understand why Toyota used the FJ (Fleetvan Jeep) designation when Jeep was a totally different company. I had an FJ60 for many years untill it rotted away under me. Now worth a lot of money if you can find a good one. I am a bit of a Classic 4x4 nerd. Still running my 1996 Patrol everyday which still runs a treat and is in excellent condition.

Sometimes a simple wooden jig will suffice. Choose a hard wood like oak or ash. These are a couple of door stops I made for an older Toyota jeep where I had to mill out a section on the slant. To stop things moving about,

A little off topic but I take the chance of being called pedantic. Calling a Toyota a Jeep is like calling a Ford a Vauxhall or a Bridgeport a Proxxon. I get really annoyed when people call my Nissan a Jeep. angry

Ok will run & hide now. wink
