Thread: Minnie Traction - 3rd Gear |
03/02/2018 17:26:04 |
I am now working on the variows shafts. I have read, I think carefully L C Mason's word on pages 52 and 53.. I am confused as yes a press fit for the 25T is mentioned, but it seems that it would be better if it were silver soldered on the boss. No problem with the 50T gear, as that is bolted on. Can anyone please advise as to what is their best method of fitting the the 25T on the boss. I am sorry to keep seeking help, but you have all helped me immensly so far. Thank you. Best wishes to all Malcolm Farrant Edited By Malcolm Farrant on 03/02/2018 17:26:44 |

Thread: Minnie Traction - More Hornplate Questions |

Jason, many many thanks - you give me comfort !! I will do as you suggest. Best wishes Malcolm |

I have prepared my Hornplate, but do not want to place it until I am clear on the Placing Measurements. On page 37 there is a drawing giving the height above the wrapper sheet as being 1 1/8th inches and 5/16th up from the base of the wrapper sheet. My measurenents are slightly adrift from those quoted. Which is the more important, or do I split the difference between the two. overall I am out by about 1/8th" Thanks all Malcolm Farrant |

More confusion today. The drawings show a drilling template layout on page 30 of the book. This show thw lowest row of holes to be 1" from the base line,. but the plan s (which is drawn to scale gives no meaurement as to where the lowest line of the nine holes are, but in measuring it appears they are 5/8" to the center from the base line. Which is correct or am I mis-reading something ? Or does it not matter if you follow the template drawing or the Plan. In anticipation ...yet again Best wishes Malcolm Farrant |

Thread: Minnie Traction Engine - Fly Cutting |
06/01/2018 09:40:57 |
To you all ...Thank you so much for all your replies. Alas I was not being very inteligent when I made my posting to the Forum First of all I should have Spelt Mini correctly . I am making the Minnie Traction Engine, with castings fron A J Reeve. The " Bible" I mentioned is L.C. Mason's Book "Scale Model Traction - Engine Building - Featuring Minnie. It seems from the replies that infact it is not really a fly cutter I need. Richard S2 infact gave me the answers. It seemsn that Fly-Cutting is for Flat material whereas I am seeking to cut curves as I now realise are detailed in the book.....It seems at 80 I am still a vedry slow learner , but THANK YOU ALL Very best wishes Malcolm Farrant |

Jason, Yet again thank you...I will try again tomorrow. Initially I will try Norman's idea of no annealing. It is likely all my fault for drilling the hole first. I have a lot of Corian (used for Kitchen worktops)off-cots these are really good for making formers. You can make them any thickness by lightly sandinfg, appl;ying superglue and clamping. They cut really easily, and are equally easy to file. I now3 use nothing but. - Off cuts can be obtained from any Kitchen installer or of course on Ebay. Once again thank you all for being so helpful. ...Happy Christmas Malcolm |

I have spent all day trying to make the Perch Bracket....DISASTER. I have found it really hard to make the relevant bends. I confess that I had drille the 7/8th hole first, but not sure that effected the result. Anyway I now have to start again. It seems there is now easy way to anneal steel , or am I wrong ? But Brass aneals easily. Is there any good reason not to use Brass for this item. But still having the curved prtion in steel. Equally is not possible to make the item from three pieces of brass silver soldered where they join ? Can any of you bright people give me any advise as to how I can progress. In anticipation THANKS regards Malcolm |

I have made the Gap piece, but I cannot find which is the front and which the rear !!. At one end there is a 3/8" overlap, and at the other it is 1/4" . I need t know, as I cannot proceed with marking out the the Rilling rrig. in that there is 1/8" at front, and 1/4" qat tghe rear face. Alas I have been in hospital for a while, but am now bacck and active (slowly !!) I have almost completed the boiler, and will put photos up,when it is done. A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE Malcolm

Thread: Former Making made easy |

In normal circumstance Formers are made from mild steel. If you have not tried it i SUGGEST YOU TRY corian. This is a Dupont Pastic used extensively for kitchen worktops. The sheets are approx: 1/2" thick. Any kitchen fitter will have offcuts from letting in Kitchen sinks etc, and will charge pennies for them. If you need thicker than 1/2" it is a simple matter to gently sand the face, coat with Supoer glue, and clamp. They are really easy to cut, and grind to any shape. Try it ...Uou will not be disappointed.....Good luck Malcolm Farrant
