Thank you for your reply Hopper . confirmed my calculation, the extra .020" is for crest and root addition using a pointed cutting tool profile. ie P x 0.160083 = 0.020". Kind Regards Eric |

I have been called everything during my working life in engineering including engineer . But at the end of the day you are only as good as your last job. and you answer for any problems" well that's what you are paid for". The old chap who taught me wasn't an engineer but they would come and ask his advice and he gave it freely, he used to make model soldiers etc for war games a proper bloke. "model maker" Oh and if it ain't right say so . Regards Eric |

I always used M&W when plating and fabricating, Check for square butt up to plate scribe a line flip it over scribe a second should lie directly on top of first . I would check mine when starting to mark anything out . Sorry if I am teaching you to suck eggs Eric |

Update managed to get the stuck chuck off hip, hip, hooray . removed back gear to avoid damage made a head stock spindle insert ,and removed chuck from back plate . I then used two large pairs of stilsons ,much to my relief it came off. Did a lap of the garden shouting thank you thank you. will make a back plate for my 4 jaw chuck after re cutting a gear change gear that needed a couple of teeth welding up due to postage damage. Regards Eric |

Yeah a lot of the old machines have been replaced by faster and more accurate machines and so they should be it is the only way forward . I just think it is not a bad thing to keep your eye on the past so the old skills are not completely forgotten . look at the colonial gun smith on youtube as an example . I will do what I do best and Shut up now about the kennedy hacksaw Eric |

High output or industrial use not really practicable . But for an old retired fabricator welder who spent his working life chasing time it's relaxing. to sit on the bench listening to the beat of the little saw whilst drinking a cup of coffee is shear bliss. I do understand that if you have a lot of cutting to do it will most likely be the wrong tool for your needs and a little band saw will knock it out of the park.. but I love it . Eric |

Well hack saw arrived quite good condition for 50years old?. Need to drill and tap stripped motor hold down bolt holes to 6mm the oil damper operates on the same principle as a toilet flush system ie a thin diaphragm . I cut a thin plastic disc from a marg tub and placed it between the metal washer and the holed damper block and it now works a treat . Well pleased. Eric |

Thank you for your replies. My best deal was an AVO mk 5? valve tester paid £10 used it for a few years sold it for £500, mind you I do miss it find it hard to let things go . I don't like buying new like to feel the vibes of old tools etc possible hoarder in the making ? |

You did really well to get it at that price. I paid £82 for mine, might seem a lot but I like old machine tools , lets face it you have to pay £1+ for a box of matches and God knows how much for a night out. If they are still going strong after 50+ years then it good enough for me,

Hello fellow swarf makers. Just acquired a kennedy 60 hacksaw with a Lothian motor "1970 ish would have liked a 90 but quite rare so the 60 will do" waiting on delivery should be ideal for my requirements and a good addition to my small work shops. Regards Eric |

Well Nearly there have just had the saddle traversing first time in many years. Purchased some change gears 16 dp of the bay for a good price, the one I really needed was a 48 tooth it arrived with one tooth broken due to poor packing . The seller offered a 50% reduction so I decided to keep them a try to repair it. Got some ENC1 2.5 99% nickel rods and welded it up with my AC oil cooled Oxford ,Using the cold method no pre heat. Went well no slag inclusion or cracking half inch weld at a time with rapid peening after each weld. Will attempt to remove the well stuck three jaw chuck next fingers crossed then make a back plate for my 4 jaw chuck, recut the repaired gear tidy up the gear train fit guards . I will also remake the 48 tooth 14 DP gears as the three jaw chuck was not able to hold the dia ,so had to drill three holes in the gear blank for the jaws to get a grip making the gears a little sloppy. Shall have to learn how to post photo's nothing better than a pic. Regards Eric

One of my favorite old time tips is from Dykes' Automobile Encyclopedia of the same year. To get more life out of worn out piston rings, you can "put the tension back in it" by standing the ring edgewise on a steel block (vise) and peen around the inside diameter with a ball peen hammer. We would use this method if we had slightly over rolled a piece of angle iron or iron ring to go around a boiler. lay it flat on the floor ,walk around the ring tapping it with a sledge hammer would spring it out slightly. |

Old caravaner's trick was to fill a bucket with a mix of half rice and half salt and place in the van to keep out condensation whilst in storage. I use it in my metal shed, not perfect but helps. regards Eric. |
