Never saw so much hot air produced over any subject .Just reading Dave,s posting regarding politicians and artificial intelligence. This could be of some use to them since intelligence of any kind seems to be something in which they are somewhat deficient,to put it mildly.

Regarding the over 70,s not being allowed to vote,I,d be all in favour of this, provided that since we would not be allowed to vote, neither should we be allowed to pay taxes or contribute in any way to the running of our country.

Fair is fair. Let them get on with it,funded by their own age groups, while we stay out of their way.

Maybe after nearly 80 years of listening to such rubbish from them,I,m just a bit cynical, but as far as I can see, their aim seems to be to hang in there long enough to get a pension for life after only four years in office ! Nice work,if you can get it.

Does anyone really believe that they would write off the tax they get from petrol and diesel? Think again,my friend

I think I will go out to my workshop and do my bit to overheat the planet, before they put a tax or a ban on that too.

What about the simple horse and cart? Worked for years Just an idea,is it any more stupid than the others?

My guess is that he owns the joint, simple as that !

Or else,he has a very understanding foreman, not like the ones I remember .smile d

24/07/2017 18:22:19

That,my friends,is what we should be aiming for. ! Forget your mini mills and your 3 1/2" lathes, this is the way to go!

No more fooling around with "light" cuts, just get stuck in there and chop lumps off, right away.

So,let us join together and knock out our end walls, side walls, back walls or whatever, never mind SWMBO. or the cost of running such equipment,it,s all in a good cause !

Seems to me that this guy is on the wrong site!

Now,where did I put that lump of 24"X 12" X 6" that I want to work on?,must be somewhere,perhaps behind the 4 High Mill?

24/07/2017 15:19:43

Never knew there was such a thing as an angled table. Dont think I,d have room for that. Perhaps if I knocked out the end wall and moved a few things around and --------------------------------------------------------- Well,I can dream, can,t I?

Looks like he owns that Gaff and can afford to play around.

Dont believe in things which clamp onto other things to turn it into something it is not. Reminds me of the situation years ago when a 1/4" drill was supposed to A Drill holes

B drive a bench saw

C drive a wood lathe

D Drive a sander

E Power a spraygun

The list went on and on,but not the drill,it,s bearings packed up. Could you blame it?

One tool for one job, simple as that. No such thing as "One tool fits all".

Yes,I can see that vice be a bit more useful.

24/07/2017 11:58:14

Can,t see too many guys making one of these, not in our shops, anyway.

Seems a lot of work to put in to produce something so useless, just nice to look at.

As an aside, that is one big,big machine!

Have seen these units in Aldi,s,might buy one next time they appear. Can think of many jobs where they would be handy.

Regarding Ebay !! I get the feeling that place is used for getting rid of junk which they can,t sell otherwise. You buy a pig-in-a-poke,and have little or no comeback. I stay well away from it.

To knurl or not to knurl, that is the question !sadsad

First off, to Gordon W.

As regards burning them,I do,and that,s all I do with them ! I too live in the sticks, but only a ten mile round trip.

I think they may have more value for the scrap metal rather than the timber.

To Richard,

I have more respect for my woodworking machines than to put that rubbish through them. A ll you need is one missed nail, not too difficult, and your blade or planer knife is ruined. Not worth it for the sake of a few boards. I suppose it,s a case of whatever takes your fancy, but good blades and knives do not come cheap.

They do,however,make good firewood.

23/07/2017 13:41:54

I found out years ago that trying to save timber from pallets was a waste of time. The people who make these things must get the nails for nothing.Bearing in mind the bit of timber you might manage to save,it,s not worth the effort. Sometimes I get old pallets to cut up for firewood, and even that,s not worth doing. I would never think of trying to re-machine any such timber,I think more of my machines. No wonder you see them dumped all over the place.

All this talk of 3D and Cad brings me back many years, when we used to the Saturday Matinee in the local flea pit,for 4d. [This was long before the idea of "Home Entertainment" was ever heard of ] The Cad,of course, was the "Baddy" and was boo,ed every time he appeared.

Ah ! Happy days, when we knew not a lathe from a latch key, and the only milling we knew about,we got from our Mothers, when we stepped out of line.

Dave,I think you are just showing off,why can,t you stick to cutting up stainless steel sheet?

Do you never think of people like us,who can,t even do a decent knurl,in the first place.

You have a lot to answer for,but dont stop trying.

Thread: How to Flatten a Thin Steel Plate?
20/07/2017 21:24:34

Hi Dave,

Like I said, your posts are always interesting.I wonder how a band saw would cope with s/s?. I have used my wood band saw to cut mild steel sheet, with a metal cutting blade but it,s too slow. Never knew there were so many different grades of stainless. I have a few bits of it,no idea what they are, just that they are hard to cut and harder to drill. Think I,ll just give it a miss, life is too short !

20/07/2017 17:06:33

I dont think Dave needs the plate so as to be able to kick the door open. I,ve seen these plates on many garage doors, they appear to be there to protect the bottom of the doors from------What?

I have never managed to flatten any piece of thin strip,so I,m listening !.

20/07/2017 14:03:55

Would love to know the answer to that one too !

I love the idea of a thick lump of "something".

Thread: Milling speeds

Hi John,

I came across sheet of cutting speeds for various materials some time ago,not sure where I downloaded it from, but it seems to cover everything.. I would be happy to post you a copy if you like.
