Thread: Bench Drill identification
20/11/2020 12:59:18

Thanks Michael,

Didn't think of looking there frown, I'm afraid the coconut has gone dry and the goldfish has sadly passed away crying but I can offer you a sprout from brussels in time for Christmas if I can get it past Customs devillaugh,

Now to see if it gives me the info about the chuck that I so badly need.

Regards

Roger

Back in the late sixties my father acquired and restored this bench drill:

bench drill 1.jpg

bench drill 2.jpg

This is the only id plate on it:

bench drill serial plate.jpg

and this is the motor plate:

motor plate.jpg

I don't know if this is the original motor or a replacement?

My reason for asking is that I want to replace the chuck but don't know if it is in a taper or threaded!

Thanks

Roger

I would suggest taking to 50psi, rest for 10 mins, if no pressure drop then up to 80, rest for 5 mins, if no pressure drop then increase in 30psi increments check for drops until you reach max pressure.

Others will probably differ devil

I'm the same as Nigel (mgnbuk),I bought a night heater as sold for campers and motorhomes from Ebay for (I think) £120, been running it for 3 years now with no problems at all.

It's used about 60 litres over the three years but I run mine on kerosene @39.9p per litre, half the price of red diesel.

My workshop is 7 x 5 metres, built in shiplap with 100mm insulation in the roof and 50mm in the walls and lined with ply

Assuming this is a vintage gauge 1 engine the boiler pressure will be similar to the Mamod/Willesco et al 'toy' engines that abound. That will be quite low, in the 20 to 30 lb psi range, would be quite safe to heat it up, with water in, to see if it leaks. You're not going to have destructive explosions, just hisses and sizzles.

A hydraulic test is more likely to damage it rather than prove its safety.

Nothing new there then, collected a collection of those cutters over the years.

Obviously been there, done that, knows all that is needed to know while there is a good proportion of us that don't!

One comment though the chap in the video has a large mill, climb milling to that radius I don't think I would like to attempt on a smaller mill.

Thread: cateracts.
07/09/2020 11:54:27

Apologies for this long post cool, I was born with extremely bad eyesight, around -10 and -12 along with severe astigmatism.

Eventually, in the early 1980's I went to London Eye Hospital and had both eyes done by radial keratotomy by pioneer David Steele, this was the operation that preceded laser correction, I was the first to have both eyes done in the same operation and the worst vision done as well, the op was successful giving me almost perfect vision, he did offer to repeat the op and give me perfect vision but I was quite happy with what I had and didn't want to risk another op.

Anyway roll on to 2001, aged 51, and my sight began to deteriorate, the ensuing opticians changed my prescriptions finally concentrating on the right eye until the last one said "your not driving are you?" "No" I said devil, I get a lift for my 52 mile round trip to work! I asked her if it was worth seeing a consultant and she said that she would refer me.

6 months later I saw a specialist and he said that I had a wonderful pair of cataracts!!!! I was shocked, angry, relieved et al, I really thought I was going blind and not one optician said I had cataracts! A few weeks later I got a letter stating he felt that he wasn't experienced enough to do the ops due to my precious ones and would refer me to another pioneer, Paul Chell, who was specialised in my type of case.

So I had my cataracts done, twice on one eye and three times on the other, this was due to my cataracts being so bad they couldn't get readings to get the right prescription the first times.

So now my eyes are fine, I still need specs, both for ease of driving and a couple of pairs for normal reading and close up work, my only, and frustrating, issue now is myopic fungus formed when I had cataracts and detached after the ops and so I have lots of floaters in my eyes, I can normally 'unsee' them but every now and then my brain picks up on them and they bug me. laugh.

Hi Gary,

These lathes seem to be breeding lately, PM your email address through the inbox on the top line when you're logged in and I'll send you a copy, it's for the mk11 with the crosslide power feed but also applies to the earlier model in part if that's the one you have.

Thread: Cast Iron grades
20/08/2020 17:53:45

Thanks guys, thought I'd ask the question, now I know smiley. The plans call up for gunmetal but with 2 engines to build I'd need a mortgage so going with alternative metals and not castings.

20/08/2020 16:21:27

Would SG (ductile) cast iron be better for steam engine cylinder blocks or just standard grey stuff? It's for a borderer engine build.

I agree 100% with Bazyle regarding the army. If macho young blokes the world over refused to go killing people and getting themselves killed on behalf of some megalomaniac, who will hide somewhere in a deep hole until the killing is over, then the world would be a much better place. Sad to say that it needs to happen everywhere before wars can end.

"Macho young blokes". I think you'd best keep half wit comments like this to yourself !!! 😠

Edited By Phil McAvity on 31/07/2020 14:30:06

I agree, these types of comments are not needed in any forum especially in model engineers ones! Also don't forget that our armed forces are multi sexual, they appear at a lot of the natural disasters, and man made ones throughout the world and in this country and put themselves in harms way to protect those who cannot protect themselves.
