Thread: Another EVRI calamity. |
15/12/2022 14:59:16 |
I have contacted the seller, I can see they have raised an enquiry (as did I) but EVRI have not responded so whatever the process is supposed to be it is struggling. I don't live anywhere near Chatham so hopefully not mine. |

Anyone know what the EVRI process is when they can't deliver - is it left to the local agent, or does it go back to the delivery hub/whatever? I had a failed delivery attempt last week. They helpfully sent me a picture of the parcel outside my gate but said they couldn't get in - it may have been frozen shut I suppose but Amazon have delivered as have Royal Mail when they're not having an off day. Anyway, in spite of the accompanying "we'll try 3 times" statement there have been no further tracking updates so I am wondering which dusty corner it has been dumped in and whether if I catch the agent next time whether they will know anything about it. |

Thread: Slow Speed Grinder? |
05/12/2022 08:54:27 |
Guessing also quieter and less vibration. I regret not buying an industrial bench grinder that I was offered once, I declined because it was large and 3 phase but since then I have thought that it plus a VFD inverter would have been a much nicer thing to use than my current DIY store one, and would have allowed slow speed use as well. I suppose brushless DC would do similar now without taking up so much space. |

My top tip - justify workshop expenses by occasionally making or mending things that your family like or find useful, maybe they will then see the little bits of shiny metal as more suitable for presents. |

That Myford Boy fellow who we are not permitted to link to has been modifying a C0 lathe including adding a stepper driven auto feed, may be worth browsing for some inspiration. |
Thread: BA Spanners on Metric nuts |
01/09/2022 09:17:09 |
"BA spanner sizes in mm" gave me this, scroll down page to find appropriate table. Whether the spanners actually fit will probably also depend on manufacturing tolerances, not worth it for anything more than finger tight I suspect or you will start rounding things off. |

Bonne chance, there were specific fixes around the time but I would expect any more recent software update to do the trick. It should then be good until 2038. Adrian |

Part of the GPS broadcast includes the week encoded in a 10 bit field (0-1023) which increments for around 20 years and then goes back to zero again. Older devices need a software patch from their makers to update so you will have to search and see if something exists for your device and how to apply it. I have a TomTom that no longer predicts arrival time for this reason, unfortunately now unsupported by them so unfixable but still works otherwise. If by quite a while you mean since April 2019 then perhaps the GPS week number rollover may be to blame? |
Thread: Is It Possible |
18/08/2022 17:13:40 |
My recollection was that the album titles etc were encoded inconsistently across different disks so even if the ripper extracted something I had to use a tag editor to tidy up afterwards. Some would fetch corrected info from the Internet as needed, but as I say it's been a while. |
18/08/2022 17:05:09 |
There are software tools available - search for "MP3 Tag Editor". I'm not going to recommend one as it's been a while since I did this and the world has probably moved on. Edited By Adrian R2 on 18/08/2022 17:06:39 |

I may have mentioned this before but have you come across a Youtube channel called "Olfoundryman" in your research? He is, I think, a retired professional foundry worker who up until some recent poor health was still casting in his home workshop and producing high quality work. I have tried to copy his advice on pouring basins and runners in my own poor attempts. A recent video titled "possibilities" includes some recommend reading, e.g. Dr John Campbell. |

Search around a bit and you will find pictures similar to this one showing the tools against a workpiece. One of them will hopefully match the tools you have but as noted above apart from threading you can generally just use whatever fits best to the job at had. Do you have the most appropriate shank size for your lathe? e.g. mine will take a 10mm without packing or an 8mm with some shims underneath, a bit of experimentation might be needed to see which works best but don't go too big as negative shims are much harder to come by. |

(interrupt) I find the "Privacy Badger" browser plugin to be very good at quietly decluttering websites of useless adverts and clickbait. It's also easily turnoffable in the rare event that it interferes with something. and now back to your regular programming... |

My son looked at the Dyson Institute scheme - they offer a half and half so you get your degree while working. In the end he decided not to apply but worth considering. Otherwise also research sponsored degrees, typically here you work for the company during holidays and they cover your fees and give you a job offer on graduation. A friends daughter is doing one in IT. The application process was quite lengthy but she is enjoying it now. |
Thread: Drill bit storage |
17/05/2022 09:10:54 |
Agreed, I could buy a full set and be prepared for anything, but if I buy the usual 2-10mm offering then I get wholes and halves...my only explanation is that the manufactures think that DIYers don't do tapping and like a nice big clearance around their bolts. Tracy tools do a tapping sizes set (no mention of a storage box), but that's the only one I've found so far, otherwise it's drill and tap sets and I have enough taps already. |
16/05/2022 17:08:22 |
A related point. Why don't metric drills come in useful sets? i.e. ones that include tapping sizes for the standard fastenings - I seem to have little use for the half sizes that come in standard sets but then I am missing 3.3 and 4.2 for tapping M4 and M5. Or am I looking for the wrong thing, or doing it wrong entirely? I do sometimes use an x.5 to drill a smaller hole then y to get the size I want, but this is two operations and if I'm going to do two operations then why don't I just get a set of reamers? (Sorry, musing...)

@Dave, I think ebay now issues the purchaser with a reference code that the seller should ask for when collection is made to confirm the transaction and close this loophole. I've not tried this in practice yet. . |
