I wonder if I might as a question on this post I have no greater knowledge beyond inserting a 3 pin plug into a socket. Talk of single , three phase and other technical stuff is hard going to paracetamol level. Recently our heating engineer, suggested that we switch to an electrical boiler, and produced leaflets etc. He then sent round his electrical specialist who calculated the floor area and said oh no you can't you will need two linked boilers which is beyond the local overhead cable capacity. This was not something I was even aware of. In simple terms how does one establish what equipment can be used in which location . Who should one approach to avoid plunging the district into darkness, is this a rural problem, is a SIMPLE calc available before purchasing larger upgrades of equipment. This info may of help to those intending heavy metal removal Sorry if the question is "Simple" to some. (We ended up staying with oil)

How many people know that th Royal mint issues a £100 coin?? NOw before you get excited IT IS LEGAL TENDER BUT NOT TO BE FOR GENERAL USAGE. Work the logic in that. |

Martin Kyte...... No need to smelt or store coins, my guess, he sold coins to those who wished to purchase them for more than face value. Dealers, collectors, those who simply wanted an old coin. His only action would be to sort by individual mint, year, condition and sell, knowing that he can return any non wanted coins to bank Should you wish you could do the same in the UK. There have been more than 60 (And counting) design variations on the 50p coin issued in various quantities (Did you even notice?) collectors will pay a premium over face value for the best examples. 1p and 2p coin of the right type can be of interest to collectors, but don't expect us give the game away😜😜😜

Martin kite........I reported only what I read. Having recently purchased a Phili. minted Wild West dollar dated 1900 US 900 grade silver for £90 it was of interest to me as a coin collector. |

It is a feature of UK and some European countries that a change in coinage results in the old system being withdrawn over a period. This is not so in the USA where old coinage continues to be used. Technically a 20dollar gold piece can be exchanged for goods worth 20 dollars, but in reality the bullion value vastly exceeds the face value. There are, I believe, strict regulations regarding exports of coinage from the USA. I was reading a week or so ago in the financial section of the press that an unemployed guy twigged on to the fact that some of the half dollars had a silver content of greater than face value so he started drawing his "benefits" in half dollars and sorting them out. This is not as difficult as it seems as when viewed in an edge on the silver coins have a different hue. This operation got so large that he was required to open a business account at the multitude of banks that he was using. The amount being credited bought him to the notice of the Revenue authorities who could not find any evidence of malpractice. The banks involved got fed up with counting half dollars which were not of great interest to the general public, so they started to order in bags from the federal reserve, these provided an even greater source of silver half dollars. He is now some form of millionaire and now is looking at nickels whose nickel value is greater than face value |

Clive India..... Re last para. Yes I do. The mars bar had the appearance of a loaf it was kept wrapped and sliced up to share. Sweet rationing lasted untill 1953 do your remember waiting to discover what value the coupons in your mums ration book for the next period. Cutting the tiny coupons out of the ration book(first entry into scissors eng) clutching the tiny square in one hand and a tanner in the other. The chocolate dragees at 6.5d were always just too expensive. And ALL those glass screw cap jars on view. Apologies to all who haven't a clue what we are talking about............... John |

Thread: Encouraging new hobbyists |
25/03/2017 10:54:00 |
Reading the above posts thoughtfully I wonder if there is a problem in the way "we" present our selves to the wider world. I suspect that most workshops are kept locked, and offsprings are under a death threat never to enter. I wonder how many of us would offer the local schools access to our workshops for the educational experience which we no longer wish to be on offer at school. The loss of workshops in schools also has the effect of excluding those who wish to attend "evening classes".The public perception of "our" activites is within a spectrum from craftsmen.........to eccentrics. As I mentioned in an earlier the constant use of abbreviations may deter new entrants. I have just clicked on to DOWNDRAUGHT TABLE expecting to find info. on aero wing design, so it's not just abbreviations!!!!!! Teh spelling does not help off coarse😡 |

I wonder if the answer is a little closer to hand. Do magazines like ME and MEW actively encourage youngsters in the world of models and engineering? I remember being allowed by my parents to switch from the Meccano Magazine to Model engineer, it seemed very "grown up" at the time, it was like doing "Things" with real tools which had a practical hobby purpose. I now do not subscribe to either magazine. The titles and purpose have been reversed with engineering dominating modelling. I have in recent times thumbed through some new issues, with a post graduate level of education and professional qualifications the content is approaching incomprehensible. The constant and multiple use of abbreviations like TPI,DTI! DRO, QC, WHITWORTH BSF! METRIC,IMPERIALS X Y and Z axis. To make an analogy it's like telling a potential Christian that he has to study hagiology in Greek before he can get started. The newbie is deterred by the content, and thinking it too complicated puts his copy down on the bottom shelf and examines the top shelf which is something he can understand I wonder if editors understand that increasing complexity of content may actually lead to reduced sales and/or reduce the interest generally, and end up with an elite group whose knowledge is so great that they no longer a magazine at all |

Richard........whilst you have had plenty of advice no body has indicated that there are dangers when you start melting metal. Check local and national regs, consider your domestic insurances, safety clothing face and hand protection and the ventilation of toxic fumes. Boring stuff, but there for a reason. |

As no more than an amateur, whose lathe is no more than modelling eqpt, with no intention of professional usage, thus my time is free. Purchasing several tail stock chucks and inserting tooling for sequential use seems a simpler solution. No doubt the great and the good will inform this sinner otherwise. But it works for me |

Martin.......guilty of simplicity..........yes if you are reproducing the calossos of Rhodes, on the suggested part the mould would have an ingate and an "out gate" and the melt would chase the wax out, probably in a centrifuge complying to HSE regs |
