the idea was to get quite good on the lathe an mill so in the end I can machine small parts out of titanium ie the moderator an safety catch and other bits.
Tianiumswarf is not for beginners. Difficult to machine and impossible to stop when it burns. Start learning with stainless steel. It does not ignite easily Edited By Niels Abildgaard on 23/01/2021 11:54:53 |

Throw old AC motor out and put a sewing machine motor on. I did and it sounded very nice and was easy to alter speed. |

Table was tested by two neigbours and their child rocking sideward in unison.Looked funny and no problem .Human mass 1.5 times diabas plus lathe. There is no neigbours underneath unless chineese count as neigbours. It was much more alarming that the roller cages rubbed the bores.I filed them down and have no ultrasonic bath. First five minutes sounded awfull but now they are OK and power falls steady and is now 80W down from about 200 yeasterday.temperature around 37 degree and I have put a chair and another miserable and cheap secondhand table as first line of defense against collapse. I think world is quite a pleasant place for old men. Lathe ,diabas and table are united by two M12 all-threads. Edited By Niels Abildgaard on 09/01/2021 09:47:55 |

A Boxford VSL escaped my inhumane experiments and is in a good home where new owner also has pre WW2 Citroen Traction Avant. Very classy company for a Boxford. My cheap 210 that came with 38mm spindle bore has cut first swarf on its own new 50mm bore spindle. It went very well but bearings are running much to hot. It is very instructive to have a Watt meter before converter. I made motor run 2000 rpm(Belt to spindle 4 to 1 ca) without belt and used 20 W. With belt on but not cutting and same speed consumption was 190W and belt and bearings became much to hot.. Spindle nut was loosened and a hammer and woodblock worked and consumption sank to 120W. Tomorrow the 125mm four-jaw with 48mm hole will be put on and we will try some real parting off. Edited By Niels Abildgaard on 08/01/2021 19:56:50 |

Can we have a picture of lathe in corner? I became a widower and moved to a small ground level apartment and put a 25mm axle through Boxford A cabinet and put two airblown wheel (Dunlop) on. Without air in tubes, cabinet rested on floor with plywood protection and inflated it could be moved with one hand. I took pictures but cannot find them . Thread: Boxford Lathe Big Bore Conversion |

I have played director of a hobby lathe factory for quite some time now. I started with a thread called Ideal lathe spindle nose I got involved in this Boxford big bore thing I started a thread named Lathe improvement. It was all a try to define the next million making hobby lathe generations and i now se it as a classical example of starting at the wrong end of problem. One should rather start with what holding chucks, faceplate etc are usefull. For a 240mm lathe minimum tooling is:A faceplate ca 200mm.An ER40 holder and a 125 or 160 mm fourjaw independent with the shortes and stiffest connection to spindle. A 100 or 125 three jaw will not harm but will not se much use either My newest plaything is industrial sewing machine motors and they stop instantaneously so screw on holders are no,no. Parting of demands stiff spindle and very short overhang so the Loo nose of my new Boxford is in danger of being replaced. Boxfords have two very good traits from Southbend: The bed has six level points on underside from machining and in connection with a piece of granite we are in Schaublin/Hardinge country. The combined feeding, facing and treading system with one slitted leadscrew If someone knows bearing dimensions please tell me. My fingers are itching. I had sworn that I would not allow a Boxford in my house Edited By Niels Abildgaard on 04/07/2020 15:34:47 Well I was going to excommunicate you for this sacrilege but your proposition is sufficient for a pardon, at least temporary. Looks like you are aiming for 38mm through bore which is quite impressive.
My latest Boxford refugee from 1979 has a big bore spindle where bearing holes must be at least 85mm diameter- Spindle through hole will be 55 or 50 mm.The gearing to leadscrew needs some thinking. Are there some Boxford fans here who knows what bearing dimensions are now? |

Picture show my best advice for small lathe drive. 600W,240V and easy to find on web. Only thing I will do different in future is to select a brand where Hall sensor/ foot pedal arm is a sepparate unit and not integrated in the power converter. |

Parting need less overhang and stiffer spindle. The picture shows a mini lathe upgrade where spindle (ca 15 $ among chineesemanufactures ,bearings (less than 2$) and drive system (30$) has changed. The spindle belt drive disc cannot sit between bearing and has to come out in free air.. The gearing to leadscrew is unchanged and the 125mm four jaw is bored to 50mm.Front end of new spindle is 30mm bore. Enjoy or improve |

The screw forks are more fixed than the violence and screwdriver misuse that I like to apply. I have cleaned up the boring and screws so that 48mm will pass and mass is 4.3kg. |

Hi Niels, Thanks for the photos, well done. Will enlarging the hole interfere with the jaw adjusting screws? I see your chuck can be mounted on a backplate from the front, makes things easier. Thor The four jaw screws were cut in same operation as the chuck body. Very healthy diet for a scrapped carbide cutter ,this mixture of cast iron and casehardened steel |

Boxford? Screwed-on chuck? You are going to arrest the spindle from high speed, to rest, in a 1/4 second? I do hope you have nothing screwed to the spindle, or it may well unscrew in about the same time, or less. Wear your toe-tectors and don’t stand in line with the workpiece/chuck is my advice if you try that trick too often! Seriously - don’t do it. It is dangerous. Hear, hear My chinese sewing machine motor on a 180 lathe unscrewed a 100mm chuck and I will never even think of screwed on lathe workholding tools. Next time an impoverished and starved Boxford follows me home I will make it a new spindle and be my fifth . |

Hi Thor It went better than expected to enlarge my 125mm four jaw.Trick was to keep screws fixed by blocking the jaws. |

Hi Niels, I have a lightweight (4.5kg) Indian 6 inch 4-jaw independent on my 290 lathe, the distance you asked is 31mm on the 6 inch and the chuck is about 45mm thick. As you say, the lighter chucks are easier to lift when you are old and have worn joints. I'm looking forward to see photos. Thor Hi Thor Do You have a link to this range of chucks? A 150 or 160 chuck on a 180 lathe is a little risky if the corresponding 125 can be bored to 50mm and be under 4 kg. |

Hi Niels, On my 80mm 4-jaw independent from ARC the distance is 29mm. Thor Thank You Thor On my normal 125 it is 36mm and mass is 5+kg. With Your 29mm a independent adjustable four jaw 125mm dia slimline with 50mm borehole should be feasible with ca 4kg mass.Nicer and safer than 9kg for a standard 160mm version that has a 50 mm bore from factory. From the photos, particularly the first, it looks like there will be very little left of the inner part of the screws when they are cut to clear the 50mm bore. The remaining flanges are all that will hold the jaws and the screws in the chuck. Instead of 9 flanges supporting the jaw I will have seven. No big deal when in 35 to 50mm zone. For smaller diameters I will use the 100mm four jaw enlarged from 25mm hole to 36mm.It is lower mass and more manegeable. II am still thinking I will ask the manufacturer to make a ligthweigth 125mm/50mm bore four jaw with screws and claws from the 80mm model. Nicer for old toads. If a reader has a 80mm four jaw can You please measure distance from front face to underside of screw hole like on picture?
